Trends in U.S. Medical Cannabis Registrations, Authorizing Clinicians, and Reasons for Use From 2020 to 2022
CONCLUSION: Enrollment in medical cannabis programs increased overall but generally decreased in jurisdictions with nonmedical adult-use laws. Use for conditions or symptoms without a strong evidence basis continues to increase. Given these trends, more research is needed to better understand the risks and benefits of medical cannabis.PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.PMID:38588545 | DOI:10.7326/M23-2811 (Source: Annals of Internal Medicine)

What do recently housed young people imagine for the future of third places? Using game-based inquiry to (re)imagine affirming, youth-centered third places
This study used game-based inquiry to partner with recently housed young people who have experienced chronic housing instability (N = 21) to understand how they would (re)imagine future third places. We then analyzed transcripts from these game sessions through qualitative thematic analysis. Participants suggested that certain tenets must be present in third places: they must offer opportunities for agency and individualization; they must meet everyday needs; and they must be explicitly inclusive. To actualize these tenets, participants imagined places that meet many needs and do many things; portable and adaptable physica...

Pilot study to assess the feasibility of self-administered, low-dose methoxyflurane for cystoscopic procedures
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings in this pilot study provide proof of principle for the design of a randomized control trial to evaluate MEOF as an anesthetic in an outpatient cystoscopic procedural setting. As more urologic procedures are being performed in an outpatient setting, this may offer significant clinical benefit.PMID:38587974 | DOI:10.5489/cuaj.8676 (Source: Canadian Urological Association Journal)

Evaluation of Telemedicine Support for Medics from the Perspective of Course Instructors
CONCLUSIONS: Most of the instructors believed that telemedicine could carry the knowledge and skills of specialist physicians to the field of operation. Access to high-quality health services in a short time through telemedicine support can increase the courage and commitment of the personnel. It is thought that with telemedicine, medics will not feel alone in the field, their worries about making wrong decisions will decrease, and their knowledge and skills will increase. Participants were particularly concerned about who will be held responsible for problems arising from interventions carried out using telemedicine, and ...

Medical Cannabis Use and Its Impact on Health Among Older Adults: Recent Research Findings and Future Directions
Curr Addict Rep. 2023 Dec;10(4):837-843. doi: 10.1007/s40429-023-00519-x. Epub 2023 Sep 26.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: With the rapidly changing landscape of state level legalization of cannabis, older adults have become one of the fastest growing populations seeking medical cannabis (MC). However, research evidence on the risks and benefits of MC use in this population remains limited. This review aims to synthesize recent literature on the impacts of MC use in older adults and identify critical knowledge gaps to be addressed in future research.RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature showed that older adults often face financia...

Characterization of peer support services for substance use disorders in 11 US emergency departments in 2020: findings from a NIDA clinical trials network site selection process
CONCLUSIONS: The majority of ED-based PSSs were funded through time-limited grants, and short-term grant funding was identified as a barrier for ED PSS programs. There was consistency among sites in the involvement of PSSs in facilitation of transitions of SUD care, coordination of follow-up after ED discharge, and PSS involvement in naloxone distribution.PMID:38589934 | DOI:10.1186/s13722-024-00453-x (Source: Addiction Science and Clinical Practice)

Synthesizing Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory and Deaf Pedagogy Framework Toward Deaf Education Reform: Perspectives From Teachers of the Deaf
Am Ann Deaf. 2023;168(1):102-127. doi: 10.1353/aad.2023.a904169.ABSTRACTIn U.S. deaf education, disablement results from a normative interpretation of disability in the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. However, Vygotsky's Fundamentals of Defectology (1993) allows educators to view current deaf education pedagogical practices through a sociocultural-constructivist lens and reject the current remedial special education model. We explore our experience as teachers of the deaf to analyze the current state of deaf education, synthesizing two core areas of Vygotskian research-sociocultural theory and deaf pedagogy-an...

Blood flow restriction attenuates surface mechanomyography lateral and longitudinal, but not transverse oscillations during fatiguing exercise
Objective. Surface mechanomyography (sMMG) can measure oscillations of the activated muscle fibers in three axes (i.e. X, Y, and Z-axes) and has been used to describe motor unit activation patterns (X-axis). The application of blood flow restriction (BFR) is common in exercise studies, but the cuff may restrict muscle fiber oscillations. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the acute effects of submaximal, fatiguing exercise with and without BFR on sMMG amplitude in the X, Y, and Z-axes among female participants. Approach. Sixteen females (21 ± 1 years) performed two separate exercise bouts to volit...
