Genomic evidence of sex chromosome aneuploidy and infection-associated genotypes in the tsetse fly Glossina fuscipes, the major vector of African trypanosomiasis in Uganda
Infect Genet Evol. 2023 Sep 12:105501. doi: 10.1016/j.meegid.2023.105501. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe primary vector of the trypanosome parasite causing human and animal African trypanosomiasis in Uganda is the riverine tsetse fly Glossina fuscipes fuscipes (Gff). Our study improved the Gff genome assembly with whole genome 10× Chromium sequencing of a lab reared pupae, identified autosomal versus sex-chromosomal regions of the genome with ddRAD-seq data from 627 field caught Gff, and identified SNPs associated with trypanosome infection with genome-wide association (GWA) analysis in a subset of 351 flies. Results f...

The anti ‐spermatogenic activity of nanoliposomes loaded with Heracleum persicum phenolic compounds in Balb/C mice
AbstractThere are various types of bioactivities that have been reported forHeracleum persicum species, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxicity properties. In the current study, the bio-accessibility ofH. persicum bioactive compounds was improved by purifying its phenolic-enriched fractions (PEF) and encapsulating them into nanoliposomes to analyze its cytotoxic impacts on mice testicular tissue and their fertility status. Nano liposomalH. persicum PEF (NL-HPEF) was prepared by ultrasound-based encapsulation of HPEF and L-agranular lecithin mixture. The size, morphology, and stability of NL-HPEF were chara...

The Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory Activity of Selenium and Lecithin Combination Against ethanol-induced Gastric Ulcer in mice via Modulating IGF-1/PTEN/Akt/FoxO3a Signaling
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 7. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03831-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGastric ulcers are one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorders. The current study investigated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of selenium (Se) and lecithin (Lec) alone and in combination against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in mice, and their ability to modulate insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1)/ Phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN)/ Protein kinase B (Akt)/ Forkhead box O3a (FoxO3a) signaling. The mice were divided into normal, ethanol, Se + ethanol, Lec + ethanol, Se + Le...

A soy lecithin nanoparticles-based extender effectively cryopreserves Holstein bull sperm
The objective was to determine the effects of lecithin type and concentration on the quality of frozen-thawed bovine sperm. We hypothesized that reducing the size of lecithin improves its interactions with the sperm and enhances the parameters that favor its motility, viability and fertility. Semen was collected from six mature Holstein bulls and ejaculates meeting minimum standards were pooled. Eight Tris-based extenders that contained 1, 2, 3, or 4 % of either conventional lecithin (L1-L4) or NL (NL1-NL4), plus two control extenders (one animal-based extender containing 20 % egg yolk [EY] and a commercial lecithin-based ...

A liposomal platform for the delivery of ion channel proteins for treatment of channelopathies - Application in therapy of cystic fibrosis
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 4:126652. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126652. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChannelopathies arise from ion channel dysfunction. Successful treatment entails delivery of functional ion channels to replace dysfunctional ones. Glycine receptor (GlyR)-rich cell membrane fragments (CMF) were previously delivered to target cell membranes using fusogenic liposomes. Here, cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR)-bearing CMF were similarly delivered to target cells. We studied the effect of lipid composition on liposomes' ability to incorporate CMF and fuse with target cell membranes...

Lipid profile, ox-LDL, and LCAT activity in patients with endometrial carcinoma and type 2 diabetes: The effect of concurrent disease based on a case-control study
CONCLUSIONS: The combination of EC and type 2 diabetes had a subadditive effect on LCAT activity and ox-LDL level. The lowest LCAT activity and the highest ox-LDL levels were observed in patients with EC and concurrent type 2 diabetes.PMID:37662543 | PMC:PMC10472909 | DOI:10.1002/hsr2.1537 (Source: Cancer Control)
