Growth differentiation factor-15 serum concentrations reflect disease severity and anemia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
CONCLUSION: For the first time, we demonstrated that serum concentrations of GDF-15 are elevated in patients with IBD in comparison to healthy controls, and the results imply that GDF-15 might be involved in IBD pathophysiology. Yet, it remains elusive whether GDF-15 could serve as a prognostic indicator in these patients.PMID:38659482 | PMC:PMC11036493 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1899 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology)

Insights into treatment of complex Crohn's  perianal fistulas
AbstractComplex perianal fistula is a common complication of Crohn ’s disease (CD) which leads to negative impact on patient’s quality of life. Successful management of the disease requires a multidisciplinary approach, including a gastroenterologist and a colorectal surgeon, applying combined surgical and medical therapy. One of frequently practiced surgical p rocedures is seton placement in the fistula tract, which is used to control perianal sepsis and drain the fistula, while preventing recurrent abscess formation.Darvadstrocel, a suspension of expanded, allogeneic, adipose-derived, mesenchymal stem cells, is safe ...

The need for surgery in pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease treated with biologicals
ConclusionDespite initiation of biological treatment, the risk of intestinal surgery remains high in pediatric IBD patients and often the need for surgery emerges after the transition to adult IBD clinics. (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)

Bowel Resection Margins in Crohn's Disease: Do They Matter?
Clin Colon Rectal Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0044-1786376Many patients with Crohn's disease (CD) will ultimately require surgical intervention for refractory disease despite recognizing that surgery does not cure CD. The initial operation, primarily for ileocolic disease, is focused on resecting the offending pathology and ideally providing a reduced likelihood for subsequent operations and additional bowel loss through surgical techniques. The appropriate margin, macro- vs. microscopic, lays in balance to provide an adequate resection that minimizes bowel loss, compared to an extensive resection which ensures a thorough resectio...

Preoperative Optimization of Crohn's Patients before Abdominopelvic Surgery
Clin Colon Rectal Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0044-1786380In this article, we review and identify modifiable risk factors associated with postoperative complications of Crohn's disease. We highlight the importance of factors such as nutrition, corticosteroids, immunomodulators, abscesses, ideal timing of surgery, and biologic and small-molecule therapy on surgical outcomes. Herein, we discuss the strategies for attenuating these risk factors. Special consideration is given to venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in this patient population. Stratified Patient Profiling for Vedolizumab Effectiveness in Crohn's Disease: Identifying Optimal Subgroups for Enhanced Treatment Response in the EVOLVE Study
CONCLUSIONS: Subpopulations of biologic-naive patients with CD in whom vedolizumab appeared to have a larger effect relative to anti-TNFα agents for the outcome of clinical remission were identified. Validation of the identified subpopulations and simplified rules are warranted to confirm these findings.GOV IDENTIFIER: NCT03710486. Diagnosis of Pediatric Appendicovesical Fistula by Contrast-enhanced Ultrasound: A Case Report
We reported a pediatric case of appendicovesical fistula that remained undiagnosed by non-contrast CT, fluoroscopic voiding cystourethrography (VCUG). Although the bladder orifice was identified during cystoscopy, its connection to the fistula site could not be determined. However, the trans-vesical contrast-enhanced ultrasound clearly demonstrated the presence of fistula. (Source: Urology)

Contributions of Synthetic Chemicals to Autoimmune Disease Development and Occurrence
AbstractPurpose of ReviewExposure to many synthetic chemicals has been linked to a variety of adverse human health effects, including autoimmune diseases. In this scoping review, we summarize recent evidence detailing the effects of synthetic environmental chemicals on autoimmune diseases and highlight current research gaps and recommendations for future studies.Recent FindingsWe identified 68 recent publications related to environmental chemical exposures and autoimmune diseases. Most studies evaluated exposure to persistent environmental chemicals and autoimmune conditions including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lu...
