Global Hospitalization Trends for Crohn ’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis in the 21st Century: A Systematic Review with Temporal Analyses
The evolving epidemiologic patterns of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) throughout the world, in conjunction with advances in therapeutic treatments, may influence hospitalization rates of IBD. We performed a systematic review with temporal analysis of hospitalization rates for IBD across the world in the 21st century. (Source: Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

The pathological and outcome characteristics of renal lesions in Crohn ’s disease
The inflammatory bowel disease, containing Crohn ’s disease and ulcerative colitis, was rare in the population, especially in the complication of kidney disease. A few studies had found proteinuria played a pot... (Source: BMC Nephrology)

What ’s New in the Postoperative Management of Crohn’s Disease?
AbstractPatients with Crohn ’s disease (CD) often require surgical resection due to complications, such as strictures and abscesses, or disease refractory to medical therapy. To understand the evolving management of patients with CD after surgery, we outline the risk factors for postoperative recurrence, advances in postoper ative endoscopic evaluation and characterization of recurrence, noninvasive methods of assessing postoperative recurrence, use of postoperative prophylactic medical therapy including newer biologics, and novel surgical methods to reduce postoperative recurrence. The Rutgeerts score (RS) was develope ...

Urban –Rural Differences in Health Care Utilization for Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the USA, 2017
ConclusionsWhile IBD or digestive disease-related office visit rates were lower in rural compared to urban areas, CD-specific hospitalization and ED visit rates were higher. Strategies that improve office-based care among rural patients with IBD may help to avoid more costly forms of health care use. (Source: Digestive Diseases and Sciences)

Smad7 Antisense Oligonucleotide-Based Therapy in Crohn's Disease: Is it Time to Re-Evaluate?
Mol Diagn Ther. 2022 Jul 16. doi: 10.1007/s40291-022-00606-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAbundant preclinical work showed that in Crohn's disease (CD), the defective activity of the immunosuppressive cytokine tumor necrosis factor (TGF)-β1 due to high levels of the intracellular inhibitor Smad7 contributes to amplify the tissue-damaging inflammatory response. Consistently, phase I and II studies documented clinical and endoscopic benefit in active CD patients treated with mongersen, an oral antisense oligonucleotide targeting Smad7. However, a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase III study w...

Annickia polycarpa extract attenuates inflammation, neutrophil recruitment, and colon damage during colitis
Immunol Lett. 2022 Jul 13:S0165-2478(22)00103-1. doi: 10.1016/j.imlet.2022.07.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are complex inflammatory disorders of the digestive tract. Dysfunctional intestinal epithelial barrier, uncontrolled neutrophil recruitment into the colon, and oxidative stress are major features of IBD. IBD cannot be cured, but symptoms can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, which often show adverse effects. Thus, safer alternative treatment options are needed. Given the known anti-inflammatory properties of An...

Early and late outcomes of a series of 255 patients with Crohn ’s disease who underwent resection: 10 years of experience at a single referral center
AbstractPatients with Crohn's disease experience an increased risk of postoperative complications and disease recurrence. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the risk factors in determining these outcomes and whether preoperative removal of some of these risk factors would optimize the results. We conducted a retrospective study analyzing a consecutive series of 255 patients who underwent surgical resection for Crohn's disease between 2010 and 2020. We considered short- and long-term endpoints, such as postoperative complications categorized according to the Clavien –Dindo classification and the appearan...
