Engaging with Rural Communities for Colorectal Cancer Screening Outreach Using Modified Boot Camp Translation
CONCLUSIONS: Using a modified version of BCT delivered in a virtual format, we were able to successfully capture community input to adapt a CRC outreach program for use in rural settings. Program materials will be tested during a pragmatic trial to address rural CRC screening disparities.PMID:38661826 (Source: Progress in Community Health Partnerships)

PD-L1 Expression in Nonbacterial Chronic Cystitis and Bladder Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Expression of PD-L1 was detected in a cohort of NCC patients, although the PD-L1 positivity rate was lower than that in BC. Our results demonstrate that the degree of PD-L1 expression in bladder tissue is associated with the presence of viral infections and with the degree of inflammatory infiltration of the bladder wall in both NCC and BC.PMID:38662109 | DOI:10.1007/s00192-024-05782-8 (Source: Herpes)

History of chronic gastritis: How our perceptions have changed
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 7;30(13):1851-1858. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1851.ABSTRACTCurrently, the diagnostic strategy for chronic gastritis (CG) is aimed not just at fixing the presence of gastric mucosal inflammation, but also at gastric cancer (GC) risk stratification in a particular patient. Modern classification approach with the definition of the stage of gastritis determines the need, activities and frequency of dynamic monitoring of a patient. However, this attitude to the patient suffering from CG was far from always. The present publication is a literature review describing the key milestones in the history...

Molecular insights into clinical trials for immune checkpoint inhibitors in colorectal cancer: Unravelling challenges and future directions
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 7;30(13):1815-1835. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1815.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer (CRC) is a complex disease with diverse etiologies and clinical outcomes. Despite considerable progress in development of CRC therapeutics, challenges remain regarding the diagnosis and management of advanced stage metastatic CRC (mCRC). In particular, the five-year survival rate is very low since mCRC is currently rarely curable. Over the past decade, cancer treatment has significantly improved with the introduction of cancer immunotherapies, specifically immune checkpoint inhibitors. Therapies aimed at blocking imm...

Recent clinical trials and optical control as a potential strategy to develop microtubule-targeting drugs in colorectal cancer management
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 7;30(13):1780-1790. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1780.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer (CRC) has remained the second and the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide and in the United States, respectively. Although significant improvement in overall survival has been achieved, death in adult populations under the age of 55 appears to have increased in the past decades. Although new classes of therapeutic strategies such as immunotherapy have emerged, their application is very limited in CRC so far. Microtubule (MT) inhibitors such as taxanes, are not generally successful in CRC. There may ...

Perfusion drugs for non ‑muscle invasive bladder cancer (Review)
Oncol Lett. 2024 Apr 15;27(6):267. doi: 10.3892/ol.2024.14400. eCollection 2024 Jun.ABSTRACTThe high recurrence rate and poor prognosis of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (BC) are challenges that need to be urgently addressed. Transurethral cystectomy for bladder tumors is often combined with bladder perfusion therapy, which can effectively reduce the recurrence and progression rates of BC. The present review integrated and analyzed currently available bladder perfusion drugs, mainly including chemotherapeutic agents, immunotherapeutic agents and other adjuvant perfusion drugs. Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) perfusion w...

Precision CT ‑guided marking with India ink and microcoils for laparoscopic resection of a lateral lymph node recurrence of rectal cancer: A case report
Oncol Lett. 2024 Apr 12;27(6):266. doi: 10.3892/ol.2024.14399. eCollection 2024 Jun.ABSTRACTAlthough rarely used in laparoscopic surgery, computed tomography (CT)-guided marking is useful for targeting small lesions. The present study describes the performance of laparoscopic resection with preoperative CT-guided marking for lateral lymph node recurrence of rectal cancer. A 48-year-old man underwent laparoscopic low anterior resection with D3 lymph node dissection for rectal cancer (postoperative diagnosis, stage IIIb). Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy was then administered. Solitary lymph node recurrence was observed i...

Transdermal Opioids and the Quality of Life of the Cancer Patient: A Systematic Literature Review
CONCLUSIONS: Transdermal therapy was suggested to have several advantages over oral opioid therapy in enhancing cancer patients' QoL. These benefits span various dimensions, including pain management, physical functioning, mental health, vitality, overall patient improvement, anger/aversion, strength/activity, general QoL, cognitive and emotional functions, fatigue, and insomnia.PMID:38659244 | DOI:10.1177/10600280241247363 (Source: The Annals of Pharmacotherapy)

Honokiol Suppresses Cell Proliferation and Tumor Migration through ROS in Human Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer Cells
CONCLUSION: Taken together, we provided the potential mechanism for treating ATC cells with honokiol, which significantly suppresses tumor proliferation and inhibits tumor metastasis in vitro through reactive oxygen species (ROS) induction.PMID:38659261 | DOI:10.2174/0118715303295608240408082523 (Source: Endocrine, Metabolic and Immune Disorders Drug Targets)

Metastatic Melanoma of the Common Bile Duct Presented with Dyspepsia
We describe a very rare case of MM metastasis to the common bile duct (CBD), presented with only dyspeptic symptoms. The patient had mildly elevated alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transferase levels. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography demonstrated a dilated common bile duct with a distal stricture. The MM diagnosis was established with the ampulla of Vater biopsy specimens obtained by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and the patient's symptoms were resolved after biliary stenting. Both primary CBD cancer and other cancer types like MM that metastasize to CBD can cause obstruction and...

Res Pract Thromb Haemost. 2024 Mar 27;8(3):102393. doi: 10.1016/j.rpth.2024.102393. eCollection 2024 Mar.ABSTRACTA State of the Art lecture titled "Cancer and Arterial Thrombosis: Therapeutic Options" was presented at the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Congress in 2023. This State of the Art review delves into the complex relationship between cancer and arterial thromboembolism (ATE), encompassing acute coronary syndrome, ischemic strokes, and peripheral arterial disease. The burden of cancer-associated ATE is not well defined, but studies indicate elevated risks, particularly in the 6 months after a c...
