Travel burdens to access care among children with cancer between 2016 and 2019: Analysis of a national population-based cancer registry in Japan
CONCLUSIONS: Most patients were treated in specialized hospitals and the treatments for specific diseases were centralized. However, most patients were estimated to travel less than 1 h, and the travel burden tended to increase for patients in rural areas, those with specific diseases, and those going to specialized hospitals. Cancer control measures in Japan have steadily improved centralized treatment while keeping the travel burden relatively manageable.PMID:38625911 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0300840 (Source: Cancer Control)

Comparative Study of Diabetes Knowledge, Attitudes, Family Support, Self-efficacy, and Self-management Behaviors Between Cancer Survivors With Diabetes and Diabetes Patients Without Cancer
CONCLUSION: This study reveals significant differences in diabetes self-management between cancer survivors and general diabetes patients. Cancer survivors showed lower diabetes knowledge, glucose control perception, and family support. These findings highlight the need for tailored self-management programs for cancer survivors.IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study offers insights for developing tailored diabetes self-management programs and educational interventions for cancer survivors.PMID:38625752 | DOI:10.1097/NCC.0000000000001351 (Source: Cancer Control)

Defining distal splenopancreatectomy by the mesopancreas
CONCLUSION: While resection margin status was not affected by the MP status in dPDAC patients, the high MP infiltration rate, as well as improved survival in MP- dPDAC patients after R0CRM- resection, justify mesopancreatic excision during splenopancreatectomy. Larger scale studies are urgently needed to validate our results and to study the effect on neoadjuvant treatment in dPDAC patients.PMID:38625602 | DOI:10.1007/s00423-024-03320-0 (Source: Cancer Control)

Imaging extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) in cancer
Histochem Cell Biol. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s00418-024-02280-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExtrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) are circular regions of DNA that are found in many cancers. They are an important means of oncogene amplification, and correlate with treatment resistance and poor prognosis. Consequently, there is great interest in exploring and targeting ecDNA vulnerabilities as potential new therapeutic targets for cancer treatment. However, the biological significance of ecDNA and their associated regulatory control remains unclear. Light microscopy has been a central tool in the identification and characterisat...

A single-arm pilot of MyInspiration: a novel digital resource to support spiritual needs of patients undergoing cancer-directed surgery
CONCLUSION: MyInspiration was feasible and acceptable to patients, and the majority were satisfied with the tool. The intervention was associated with changes in patients' ability to find meaning within their cancer experience. A randomized control trial is needed to evaluate the efficacy of the tool in a broader population of patients with cancer.PMID:38625539 | DOI:10.1007/s00520-024-08496-1 (Source: Cancer Control)

Exploration of efficacy of different therapy regimens for advanced NSCLC patients with KRAS mutation in the first-line treatment
CONCLUSION: In the first-line treatment, combination regimen has advantages over single regimen. Among them, chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy plus antiangiogenic therapy can achieve significant efficacy benefits.PMID:38625494 | DOI:10.1007/s12094-024-03485-6 (Source: Cancer Control)

Phase I/II study of stereotactic body radiotherapy boost in patients with cervical cancer ineligible for intracavitary brachytherapy
CONCLUSION: These findings suggested that a SBRT boost is more effective than the conventional EBRT boost and can be an important treatment option for ICBT-ineligible patients with cervical cancer.STUDY REGISTRATION: This study was registered at the University Hospital Medical Information Network Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN000036845).PMID:38625476 | DOI:10.1007/s11604-024-01566-8 (Source: Cancer Control)

Platinum-based adjuvant chemoradiotherapy versus adjuvant radiotherapy in patients with head and neck adenoid cystic carcinoma
CONCLUSION: In terms of reducing locoregional failures in HNACC patients, POCRT may potentially offer a more effective therapeutic approach than using PORT alone, although it also entails an augmented burden of treatment-related toxicity.PMID:38625410 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-024-05719-0 (Source: Cancer Control)

Investigating the role connective tissue fibroblasts play in the altered muscle anatomy associated with the limb abnormality, Radial Dysplasia
J Anat. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1111/joa.14040. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRadial dysplasia (RD) is a congenital upper limb birth defect that presents with changes to the upper limb anatomy, including a shortened or absent radius, bowed ulna, thumb malformations, a radially deviated hand and a range of muscle and tendon malformations, including absent or abnormally shaped muscle bundles. Current treatments to address wrist instability caused by a shortened or absent radius frequently require an initial soft tissue distraction intervention followed by a wrist stabilisation procedure. Following these surgical interventions, ...

Self-Assembled Recombinant Elastin and Globular Protein Vesicles with Tunable Properties for Diverse Applications
Acc Chem Res. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1021/acs.accounts.3c00694. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTConspectusVesicles are self-assembled structures comprised of a membrane-like exterior surrounding a hollow lumen with applications in drug delivery, artificial cells, and micro-bioreactors. Lipid or polymer vesicles are the most common and are made of lipids or polymers, respectively. They are highly useful structures for many applications but it can be challenging to decorate them with proteins or encapsulate proteins in them, owing to the use of organic solvent in their formation and the large size of proteins relative to lipid o...

Continuous immunotherapy beyond progression in clinical practice for small cell lung cancer
We describe the effectiveness of continuous ICIs beyond progression in SCLC. Medical courses of SCLC patients treated with chemo-immunotherapy were retrospectively reviewed at our hospital. The study included 36 patients with a median age of 73 years (range 46-83 years) who introduced chemo-immunotherapy between September 2019 and December 2022. Atezolizumab and durvalumab in combination with platinum plus etoposide were administered in 24 and 12 patients, respectively. The overall response rate was 67% and the disease control rate was 86%. The median progression-free survival and time to treatment failure (TTF) were 5.1 a...
