Disproportional signal of pericarditis with biological diseasemodifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) in patients with ankylosing spondylitis: a disproportionality analysis in the FAERS database
Conclusion: More reports of pericarditis were detected with AS patients on bDMARDs than with other drugs in the overall database. Further studies are warranted to investigate the underlying mechanisms and identify patient-related susceptibility factors, thus supporting timely diagnosis and safe(r) prescribing of bDMARDs. Malignancy in the Upadacitinib Clinical Trials for Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and Non-radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis
ConclusionRates of malignancy excluding NMSC were generally similar between UPA15, UPA30, ADA, and MTX and were consistent across RA, PsA, AS, and nr-axSpA. A dose-dependent increased rate of NMSC was observed with UPA in RA.Trial RegistrationClinicaTrials.gov identifier: NCT02706873, NCT02675426, NCT02629159, NCT02706951, NCT02706847, NCT03086343, NCT03104400, NCT03104374, NCT03178487, and NCT04169373. Outcomes of Surgical Treatment of Vaughan-Jackson Syndrome
Conclusion Although a degree of functional deficit persists after Darrach's procedure and tendon transfer for treatment of VJS, there are also high levels of patient satisfaction, a good NPS, and a low rate of operative reintervention. The causal relationship between immune cells and ankylosing spondylitis: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is one of several disorders known as seronegative spinal arthritis (SpA), the origin of which is unknown. Existing epidemiological data show that inflammatory and immunological fact... (Source: Arthritis Research and Therapy)

Axial spondyloarthritis treatment recommendations and disease activity monitoring in clinical practice - results of an online survey
CONCLUSION: Treatment guidelines are an important resource for rheumatologists managing patients with axSpA/AS. Although there is general agreement that disease activity monitoring is important, the implementation of the respective recommendations is lacking. Reasons may include lack of familiarity and an underdeveloped infrastructure to efficiently collect PROs.PMID:38224985 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.2023-0894 (Source: J Rheumatol)

Gut microbiota does not play a mediating role in the causal association between inflammatory bowel disease and several its associated extraintestinal manifestations: a Mendelian randomization study
ConclusionThrough the two-sample MR analysis, we identified extraintestinal manifestations that were causally associated with inflammatory bowel disease and obtained multiple associations from inflammatory bowel disease and gut microbiota, and gut microbiota and extraintestinal manifestations in further analyses. These associations may provide useful biomarkers and potential targets for pathogenesis and treatment. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

Regulatory T cells in spondyloarthropathies: genetic evidence, functional role, and therapeutic possibilities
Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are a very specialized subset of T lymphocytes: their main function is controlling immune responses during inflammation. T-regs involvement in autoimmune and immune-mediated rheumatic diseases is well-described. Here, we critically review the up-to-date literature findings on the role of Tregs in spondyloarthropathies, particularly in ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a polygenic inflammatory rheumatic disease that preferentially affects the spine and the sacroiliac joints. Genetics discoveries helped in elucidating pathogenic T-regs gene modules and functional involvement. We highlight T-regs tissue ...

The Saudi consensus recommendations for the management of psoriatic arthritis (2023)
AbstractPsoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a complex inflammatory disease characterized by musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal manifestations. It is a distinct disease entity at the interface between rheumatology and dermatology, making it challenging to manage. The diverse clinical presentation and severity of PsA require a multidisciplinary approach for optimal care. Early diagnosis and management are necessary to improving quality of life for patients. In Saudi Arabia, there is currently no unified national consensus on the best practices for managing PsA. This lack of consensus leads to debate and uncertainty in the trea...

Results of flow cytometric detection of gamma-deltaT cells in peripheral blood of patients with ankylosing spondylitis: a pilot study
Physiol Res. 2023 Dec 31;72(6):819-832. doi: 10.33549/physiolres.935140.ABSTRACTPrevious studies have suggested that gamma-delta T cells play an important role in the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). In this pilot study, the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and healthy volunteers were stained and analyzed by flow cytometry to distinguish gamma-delta T cells and its subtypes, and then to report the distribution of gamma-delta T cells and iyts subtypes and their correlation with ankylosing spondylitis. A total of 17 patients with active AS and 10 age- and gen...
