Goodbye to the term 'ankylosing spondylitis, hello 'axial spondyloarthritis: time to embrace the ASAS-defined nomenclature
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is the historic term used for decades for the HLA-B27-associated inflammatory disease affecting mainly the sacroiliac joints (SIJ) and spine. Classification criteria for AS have radiographic sacroiliitis as a dominant characteristic. However, with the availability of MRI of SIJ, it could be demonstrated that the disease starts long before definite SIJ changes become visible on radiographs. The Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society, representing a worldwide group of experts reached consensus on changes in the nomenclature pertaining to axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), such as the ...

Incidence and disease burden of autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases after non ‐pharmaceutical interventions in the COVID‐19 era: A nationwide observational study in Korea
ConclusionImplementation of NPIs to contain the pandemic led to a reduction in the incidence of SLE and changed patterns of medical care utilization and treatment cost for most AIRDs. (Source: International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases)

Clinical Characteristics of “Severe” Peripheral Psoriatic Arthritis: A Retrospective Analysis of a Longitudinal Cohort
ConclusionsOur study showed that severe patients with PsA had more disease activity, pain, and impact of disease than non-severe patients. Furthermore, we demonstrated that severity and disease activity are not interchangeable concepts. (Source: Rheumatology and Therapy)

Coexistence of ankylosing spondylitis and Beh çet's disease: Successful treatment with upadacitinib
ConclusionThis case fulfills diagnostic criteria for both AS and BD, emphasizing their coexistence. Notably, treatment with upadacitinib exhibited promising efficacy, underscoring its potential as a therapeutic option in patients with contraindications for conventional treatments. Our findings illuminate the intricate management of patients presenting with these two diverse systemic conditions and advocate for further exploration of JAK inhibitors in similar cases. Cytokines and chemokines involved in HLA-B27-positive ankylosing spondylitis-associated acute anterior uveitis
CONCLUSIONS: Significant differences were detected in the levels of several cytokines and chemokines in the serum of HLA-B27+ AS-associated AAU compared with HCs. Some novel differential cytokines and chemokines that have not been reported in other kinds of uveitis were also identified. These results reveal the underlying pathogenesis of HLA-B27+ AS-associated AAU and could potentially aid in clinical diagnosis.PMID:38577559 | PMC:PMC10994677 (Source: Molecular Vision)

Effect of secukinumab versus adalimumab biosimilar on radiographic progression in patients with radiographic axial spondyloarthritis: Results from a head ‐to‐head randomized phase IIIb study
ConclusionsSpinal radiographic progression over 2 years was low with no significant difference between secukinumab and SDZ-ADL arms. The safety of both treatments was consistent with previous reports. (Source: Arthritis and Rheumatology)

Role of endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase-1 gene polymorphism (rs13167972) in occurrence susceptibility of ankylosing spondylitis in a sample of Iraqi male patients
CONCLUSION: The AS occurred in young overweight males with blood group O-. The AG and GG genotypes are risk factors for AS development while the G allele is a risk factor that increases the chances for disease incidence.PMID:38551779 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09438-0 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Natural Autoantibodies in Biologic-Treated Rheumatoid Arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis Patients: Associations with Vascular Pathophysiology
Int J Mol Sci. 2024 Mar 18;25(6):3429. doi: 10.3390/ijms25063429.ABSTRACTCardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality have been associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Natural autoantibodies (nAAb) are involved in innate immunity, as well as autoimmunity, inflammation, and atherosclerosis. There have not been any studies assessing the effects of biologics on nAAbs in RA and AS, also in relation to vascular pathophysiology. Fifty-three anti-TNF-treated RA and AS patients were included in a 12-month follow-up study. Anti-citrate synthase (CS) and anti-topoisomerase I fragment 4 (TOPO-F4) IgM...
