Select dietary changes towards sustainability: Impacts on dietary profiles, environmental footprint, and cost
Appetite. 2023 Dec 26:107194. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2023.107194. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHealthy sustainable diets have the power to improve dietary intakes and environmental resource use. However, recommendations for improving food choices need to consider the effects of any changes across multiple dimensions of health, environmental sustainability, and dietary cost to promote long-lasting behaviour change. The aim of this study was to identify differences between original diets, and the diets that can be achieved through the implementation of select small dietary changes towards sustainability. Twelve hypothetical s...

Beverage industry TV advertising shifts after a stepwise mandatory food marketing restriction: Achievements and challenges with regulating the food marketing environment
CONCLUSIONS: After the regulation implementation, "high-in" ads fell significantly, but "non-high-in" ads rose and continued using strategies targeting children and being aired during daytime. Given research showing that advertising one product can increase preferences for a different product from that same brand and product categories, broader food marketing regulation approaches may be needed to protect children from the harmful effects of food marketing.PMID:38148176 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023002872 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

Thyroid markers and body composition predict LDL-cholesterol change in lean healthy women on a ketogenic diet: experimental support for the lipid energy model
DiscussionAmong lean, healthy women undergoing carbohydrate restriction, body composition and energy metabolism markers are major drivers of LDL-cholesterol change, not saturated fat, consistent with the lipid energy model. (Source: Frontiers in Endocrinology)

Differences in nutritional profile by chronotype among 12-h day shift and night shift nurses
Chronobiol Int. 2023 Dec 13:1-12. doi: 10.1080/07420528.2023.2294036. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute care nurses may suffer substantial fatigue if working night shift or if assigned a shift contrasting their preferred sleep-wake patterns, called chronotype. Nurses are at higher risk for diet-related, metabolic diseases compared to other healthcare professionals. Yet, the impact of preferred chronotype and mismatch to assigned shift on nutritional intake and risk for metabolic disease among acute care nurses is unclear. This observational study analyzed dietary data from 52 acute care nurses. Participants completed the...

Skipping Breakfast, Pro-Inflammatory Diet Linked to Depressive Symptoms
Skipping breakfast and eating a diet high in foods associated with inflammation (for example, foods fried in oil) may raise the risk of depression, astudy in theJournal of Affective Disorders has found.Bo Li, Ph.D., of Jilin University in Changchun, China, and colleagues examined data from 21,865 adults who were participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2018. During their participation in NHANES, the individuals completed two 24-hour dietary recalls where they reported what they ate and when. They also completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) as a measurement of ...

A healthy low-carbohydrate diet during pregnancy is associated with a reduced risk of gestational diabetes mellitus
CONCLUSION: A healthy LCD during pregnancy characterized by high-quality carbohydrate, plant protein, and unsaturated fat, was associated with a lower risk of GDM; whereas an unhealthy LCD consisting of low-quality carbohydrate, animal protein, and saturated fat, was associated with a higher risk of GDM.PMID:38057161 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad705 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

Protein-glutaminase improves water-/oil-holding capacity and beany off-flavor profiles of plant-based meat analogs
In this study, we aimed to develop better consumer-acceptable methods using protein-glutaminase (PG) to improve the juiciness of PBMA patties to meet clean-label trends. We found no significant difference between the visual surface of control and PG-treated textured vegetable proteins (TVPs). However, the microstructure of PG-treated TVP had a more rounded shape than that of the control TVP as observed under a scanning electron microscope. After grilling process, the PBMA patties composed of PG-treated TVP showed significantly higher liquid-holding capacities (a juiciness indicator) than the control patties. This suggested...

Cardioprotective anti-hyperglycemic drugs ameliorate endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress
Am J Physiol Cell Physiol. 2023 Nov 27. doi: 10.1152/ajpcell.00470.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCellular stress, notably oxidative, inflammatory and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, saturated fat consumption, hypertension and cigarette smoking cause ER stress while currently known cardioprotective drugs with diverse pharmacodynamics share a common pleiotropic effect of reducing ER stress. Selective targeting of oxidative stress with known antioxidative vitamins has ...
