Energy and nutrient content of school lunches provided for children attending school-based nurseries: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Lunches provided for children attending school nurseries are more in line with the framework for 4-7-year-olds. Free sugars, saturated fat and sodium are areas of concern consistent with previous studies. Protein is three times more than recommended. Large portions of cakes and biscuits contribute to excess energy provision.PMID:37921199 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023002331 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

Prevalence of Hemorrhoids and Their Risk Factors Among the Adult Population in Jazan, Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSION: The current study identified a high prevalence of hemorrhoid symptoms and their risk factors among the adult population in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia. The findings suggest a need to increase the awareness of the public about hemorrhoids risk factors and the importance of seeking healthcare at an early stage of the disease.PMID:37885500 | PMC:PMC10599269 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.45919 (Source: Pain Physician)

Fish oil supplementation counteracts the effect of high-fat and high-sucrose diets on the carbonylated proteome in the rat cerebral cortex
This study also evaluated the antioxidant properties of fish oil to counteract diet-induced brain oxidative damage. Fish oil supplementation demonstrated a stronger capacity to modulate carbonylated proteome in the brain cortex. Data indicated that fish oils did not just decrease carbonylation of proteins affected by the obesogenic diet, but also decreased the oxidative damage of other proteins participating in the same metabolic functions, reinforcing the beneficial effect of the supplement on those pathways. The results could help contribute to the development of successful nutritional-based interventions to prevent cogn...

A Cluster-Randomized Evaluation of the SuperShelf Intervention in Choice-Based Food Pantries
CONCLUSIONS: The intervention did not result in improved diet quality or cardiovascular health as measured by HEI-2015 or LS7. Coordinated efforts across settings are needed to address health risks facing this population.PMID:37857305 | DOI:10.1093/abm/kaad060 (Source: Annals of Behavioral Medicine)

Higher diet quality relates to better cardiac function in cancer survivors: The multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis
DISCUSSION: In cancer survivors, improved dietary fat and carbohydrate quality (i.e., greater consumption of unsaturated fatty acids and fiber) was associated with favorable cardiac function, while higher sucrose was associated with worse cardiac function. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and test whether changes in the identified dietary factors will modulate cardiac function in cancer survivors.PMID:37852519 | DOI:10.1016/j.pcad.2023.10.004 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Daily saturated fat and sodium content of elementary school meals in a large sample of 128 geographically diverse school systems in the United States
Despite federal regulations limiting saturated fat and sodium levels on a weekly average basis, daily nutrient content of school meals in the United States (U.S.) is not regulated, leading to potential large fluctuations and intake well in excess of dietary recommendations.
