Wechsler et  al (Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2024;209:262-72; https://doi.org/10.1164/rccm.202305-0808OC) examined the relationship between type 2 inflammation-associated comorbidities and the effectiveness of biologic agents in a cohort study involving over 1,700 adult patients with severe asthma. Exacerbation rate, lung function, symptom control, and long-term daily oral corticosteroid use were improved with biologic therapy regardless of the presence of type 2 comorbid conditions. Notably, greater improvements in exacerbation rate, lung function, and symptom control were observed in patients with chroni c rhinosinusitis ...

Clinicopathological Pattern of Endometrial Specimens in Women with Abnormal Uterine Bleeding and Ultrasonography Correlation
CONCLUSION: Endometrial sampling is a useful tool for evaluation of women with AUB and referring patients for treatment. Histopathological evaluation of the endometrium is very useful in detecting the etiology of AUB. Transvaginal sonography has high sensitivity in detecting polyps.PMID:38685848 | DOI:10.34172/aim.2024.31 (Source: Archives of Iranian Medicine)

Characterization of tongue coating microbiome from patients with colorectal cancer
CONCLUSION: These results elucidate the use of tongue coating microbiome in CRC patients firstly, and the fur-types observed contribute to a better understanding of the microbial community in human. Furthermore, the tongue coating microbiota-based biomarkers provide a valuable reference for CRC prediction and diagnosis.PMID:38686186 | PMC:PMC11057396 | DOI:10.1080/20002297.2024.2344278 (Source: Journal of Oral Microbiology)

Management of giant colorectal polyps ( ≥3 cm) by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) versus surgery: a propensity score–based analysis
ConclusionsESD is a safe and effective treatment for giant colonic polyps with ESD size ≥3 cm. It has the advantage of lower complication rates, shorter length of hospital stays, and lower re-admission rates compared with surgical resection. (Source: Surgical Practice)

A simplified algorithm to evaluate the risk of submucosal invasive cancer in large ( ≥20 mm) nonpedunculated colonic polyps
Conclusions This decision-making algorithm simplifies identification of LNPCPs with an increased risk of potential SMIC. When combined with surface optical evaluation, it facilitates accurate lesion characterization and resection choices. National Trends in the Incidence of Sporadic Malignant Colorectal Polyps in Young Patients (20-49 Years): An 18-Year SEER Database Analysis
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that almost half of the SMPs under 50 years occurred in individuals under age 45, younger than the current screening threshold recommended by the ACP. There has been an upward trend in malignant polyps in the last two decades. This reflects changes in tumor biology, and necessitates further research and support in the USPSTF guidelines to start screening at the age of 45 years.PMID:38674319 | PMC:PMC11052004 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040673 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Evaluation and Management of Malignant Colorectal Polyps
Surg Clin North Am. 2024 Jun;104(3):701-709. doi: 10.1016/j.suc.2023.12.007. Epub 2023 Dec 26.ABSTRACTThe detection rate of dysplastic colorectal polyps has significantly increased with improved screening programs. Treatment of dysplastic polyps attempt to limit morbidity of a procedure while also considering the risk of occult lymph node metastasis. Therefore, a variety of methods have been developed to predict the rate of lymph node metastasis to help identify the optimal treatment of patients. These include both the endoscopic and pathologic assessment of the lesion. In order to reduce the morbidity of surgery for patie...
