Gastroenterology/Hepatology: What You May Have Missed in 2023
This article summarizes clinically important gastroenterology developments from 2023 for internal medicine specialists. In colorectal cancer screening, a new RNA fecal screening test is on the horizon, as well as a new analysis on the benefits of using artificial intelligence in screening colonoscopy to detect more polyps. There is new evidence for management of gastrointestinal bleeding, a new drug for treatment of recurrent small-intestinal angiodysplasia, and a new endoscopic treatment method in patients with gastrointestinal tumor bleeding. The authors feature a randomized trial about amitriptyline as treatment for pat...

Endoscopic treatment of scarred polyps with a non-thermal device (Endorotor): A review of the literature ‎
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Mar 28;30(12):1706-1713. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i12.1706.ABSTRACTEndoscopic resection (ER) of colorectal polyps has become a daily practice in most endoscopic units providing a colorectal cancer screening program and requires the availability of local experts and high-end endoscopic devices. ER procedures have evolved over the past few years from endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) to more advanced techniques, such as endoscopic submucosal dissection and endo-scopic full-thickness resection. Complete resection and disease eradication are the ultimate goals of ER-based techniques, and novel devices ...

Fruit but not vegetable consumption is beneficial for low prevalence of colorectal polyps in a high-risk population: findings from a Chinese Lanxi Pre-colorectal Cancer Cohort study
ConclusionsFresh fruit is suggested as a protective factor to prevent colorectal polyps in individuals at high risk of CRC, and should be underscored in dietary recommendations, particularly for high-risk populations. (Source: European Journal of Nutrition)

Human fecal alpha-glucosidase activity and its relationship with gut microbiota profiles and early stages of intestinal mucosa damage
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a relationship among altered fecal α-glucosidase levels, the presence of intestinal mucosal lesions, which can be precursors of CRC, and shifts in defined microbial groups of the fecal microbiota.PMID:38614290 | DOI:10.1016/j.anaerobe.2024.102853 (Source: Anaerobe)

Management of Rectal Cancer in Lynch Syndrome: Balancing Risk Reduction and Quality of Life
Clin Colon Rectal Surg. 2023 Aug 10;37(3):180-184. doi: 10.1055/s-0043-1770730. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTPatients with Lynch syndrome are predisposed to developing colorectal cancer and a variety of extracolonic malignancies, at a young age. The management of rectal cancer in the setting of Lynch syndrome is a complex clinical scenario that requires the expertise of a multidisciplinary management team. In this review, we delve into the approach for rectal cancer in these patients, and specifically focus on several key aspects of treatment. Some unique aspects of rectal cancer in Lynch syndrome include the decision betw...

A Case of a Eustachian Tube Hairy Polyp Misdiagnosed as an Adenoid Residual in a Child
This article discusses a 12-year-old female who had a growth at the Eustachian tube's entrance on the left side of the nasopharyngeal wall, as identified by a computed tomography scan of the neck soft tissue; it was suspected to be a hairy polyp originating from the left Eustachian tube. The diagnosis of a hairy polyp was confirmed through pathology. The hairy polyp at the Eustachian tube, in this case, showed an irregular form with a wide base, making it look similar to an adenoid; thus, increasing the risk of it being misdiagnosed as residual adenoid tissue.PMID:38605528 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241244667 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)
