Distribution and diversification of Adelphobates, emblematic poison frogs from Brazilian Amazonia
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2024 Apr 19;96(1):e20230659. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202320230659. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTAdelphobates contains three species, and the inaccurate identification of A. quinquevittatus and the scarcity of records of A. castaneoticus complicate inference of their distributions; the latter species occurs in sympatry with A. galactonotus. Our objective was to revise the distributions of Adelphobates by compiling data and modeling habitat suitability, as range limits may be shaped by landscape features and biotic interactions. We initially analyzed the existence of operational taxonomic units within the nomin...

Recognising inaccuracies in Australian suicide and 'hidden suicide' data
CONCLUSIONS: Australia's finalised suicide data are likely to be more accurate than equivalent data from nations that do not revise mortality data. More comprehensive investigation (including verbal or psychological autopsy) in doubtful cases in Australia and elsewhere would probably lead to reported suicide rates being higher.PMID:38653498 | DOI:10.1177/10398562241245548 (Source: Australasian Psychiatry)

A case of fatal poisoning caused by etomidate: evidence from pathological and toxicological analyses
This report describes a rare case of a 47-year-old man who died from acute intoxication after oral ingestion of liquid containing etomidate. The cause of death was conclusively attributed to etomidate based on a comprehensive investigation, including autopsy, histopathological examination, toxicological analysis, and biochemical analysis. This is the first reported case of a fatality solely resulting from the oral ingestion of etomidate, which can provide valuable insights for future forensic investigations involving etomidate poisoning. Therefore, it is imperative to share this case with the scientific community. (Source:...

A hospital management algorithm for acute poisoning by Paraquat ® in a pediatric population, a series of cases
We describe a case series of 14 pediatric patients from the department of Cauca, Colombia, with acute intoxication after oral intake of paraquat. Patients were referred to a medium-high complexity hospital in southwestern Colombia and treated according to an institutional protocol for acute paraquat poisoning. Acute paraquat poisoning after oral ingestion is associated with a high mortality rate, even with timely medical attention, as the compound has no known antidote and quickly reaches systemic concentrations for fulminant poisoning. Based on the available literature, our center has proposed a clinical protocol includin...

Two cases of diquat poisoning in adolescent children
In this report, we compare two similar cases of juvenile diquat poisoning with dynamic changes in clinical manifestations, laboratory values, and imaging results. For the first time, the difference in whether to perform blood flow perfusion and the time difference of initiation of hemoperfusion had a clear clinical difference in the subsequent effects of diquat poisoning in children with diquat poisoning. Limited evidence is available regarding the efficacy of early hemoperfusion for diquat poisoning; however, the differences in clinical outcomes articulated here highlight the benefits of early and timely hemoperfusion the...

Comparing closure compliance and ease of use for consumer product packs designed to reduce access to children
by Annalise Richmond, David C. Schwebel, Clara Ng Pak Leung, Elke Vallez, Heidi Lesage, Raf Degeyter, Zhiwu Liang, Gerard Stijntjes Child impeding packs are difficult for children to open so protect them from unintended access to hazardous contents inside the pack. However, if packs are difficult for adults to open, in normal usage scenarios, this may result in a higher occurrence of packs being left open. This research explor es differences in ease of usage and closure compliance between two types of child impeding packs of liquid laundry detergent capsules. The two packs, “Pinch& Lift ” and “Press& Lift ”, had d...

Inhibition kinetics of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase from various species by 2-(2-cresyl)-4H-1,3,2-benzodioxaphosphorin-2-oxide (CBDP)
Toxicol Lett. 2024 Apr 18;396:28-33. doi: 10.1016/j.toxlet.2024.04.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aerotoxic syndrome has been associated with exposure to tricresyl phosphate (TCP), which is used as additive in hydraulic fluids and engine lubricants. The toxic metabolite 2-(2-cresyl)-4H-1,3,2-benzodioxaphosphorin-2-oxide (CBDP) is formed from the TCP isomer tri-ortho-cresyl phosphate (TOCP) in vivo and is known to react with the active site serine in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) resulting in the inhibition of the enzymes. Previous in vitro studies showed pronounced species differences...

Evaluation of capillary miR-122 as a prognostic biomarker of paracetamol-induced liver toxicity
CONCLUSION: This work supports the potential use of capillary miR-122 as a prognostic biomarker of liver injury throughout clinical management of patients with paracetamol overdose. Capillary miR-122 can be measured in a blood drop collected by a finger prick, a minimally invasive diagnostic test for patient stratification.PMID:38642142 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09327-6 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)
