Pediatric poisoning management: How clinical practice can benefit from forensic approach
J Forensic Sci. 2024 Apr 1. doi: 10.1111/1556-4029.15517. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPediatric population represents the most vulnerable and at risk for unintentional poisoning, with children younger than 6 years old accounting for nearly half of poison exposures. Poisoning is a time-dependent emergency. The need to reach a scientific agreement on diagnostic protocol and treatment seems to be crucial to reduce morbidity and mortality. Starting from a buprenorphine pediatric intoxication case, this article highlights the limits and pitfalls of the traditional diagnostic approach. Diagnosis of drug intoxication was achiev...

Seizure as the main presenting manifestation of three patients with acute glufosinate-ammonium poisoning

Effects of the nerve agent VX on hiPSC-derived motor neurons
Arch Toxicol. 2024 Mar 30. doi: 10.1007/s00204-024-03708-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPoisoning with the organophosphorus nerve agent VX can be life-threatening due to limitations of the standard therapy with atropine and oximes. To date, the underlying pathomechanism of VX affecting the neuromuscular junction has not been fully elucidated structurally. Results of recent studies investigating the effects of VX were obtained from cells of animal origin or immortalized cell lines limiting their translation to humans. To overcome this limitation, motor neurons (MN) of this study were differentiated from in-house feeder- a...

Transforming toxins into treatments: the revolutionary role of α-amanitin in cancer therapy
Arch Toxicol. 2024 Mar 30. doi: 10.1007/s00204-024-03727-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAmanita phalloides is the primary species responsible for fatal mushroom poisoning, as its main toxin, α-amanitin, irreversibly and potently inhibits eukaryotic RNA polymerase II (RNAP II), leading to cell death. There is no specific antidote for α-amanitin, which hinders its clinical application. However, with the advancement of precision medicine in oncology, including the development of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), the potential value of various toxic small molecules has been explored. These ADCs ingeniously combine the targe...

Trends in Adolescent Suicide by Method in the US, 1999-2020
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Suicide rates increased across all methods from 1999 to 2020. Differences were noted by sex, age, and race and ethnicity. Increasing suicide rates among racial and ethnic minoritized youth are especially concerning, and effective prevention strategies are urgently needed.PMID:38551558 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2024.4427 (Source: Cancer Control)

Comparative analysis of organophosphorus versus carbamate pesticide poisoning: a case study
Arh Hig Rada Toksikol. 2024 Mar 29;75(1):81-84. doi: 10.2478/aiht-2024-75-3781. eCollection 2024 Mar 1.ABSTRACTOrganophosphorus poisoning is a critical condition that can cause central nervous system depression, respiratory failure, and death early on. As its clinical manifestations closely resemble those of carbamate pesticide poisoning, the aim of this case study is to present a case of misdiagnosis, initially identifying carbofuran poisoning as organophosphate in a patient suspect of a heatstroke. We also present a case of intentional self-poisoning with organophosphate dichlorvos to underline the likelihood of pesticid...

Blood lead levels in an endangered vulture decline following changes in hunting activity
Environ Res. 2024 Mar 26:118712. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118712. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLead ammunition stands out as one of the most pervasive pollutants affecting wildlife. Its impact on bird populations have spurred efforts for the phase-out of leaded gunshot in several countries, although with varying scopes and applications. Ongoing and future policy changes require data to assess the effectiveness of adopted measures, particularly in the current context of biodiversity loss. Here, we assessed the long-term changes in blood lead (Pb) levels of Egyptian vultures from the Canary Islands, Spain, which have been...
