I always do my best to write clearly and precisely, but it seems I don ' t always manage to get my meaning across. So let ' s try a couple of ideas again. Please read carefully, and think about what I actually write, not what you think I might think or what other people think. The First Amendment applies only to government. It constrains what government can do, it does not place any constraint of any kind on any other entity. The courts have interpreted it a bit more broadly than its literal language. If " congress shall make no law . . . " then the executive cannot have any legal authority to do what no law permits. ...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, April 8th 2024
In this study, we tested a stem cell secretome product, which contains extracellular vesicles and growth factors, cytoskeletal remodeling factors, and immunomodulatory factors. We examined the effects of 4 weeks of 2×/week unilateral intramuscular secretome injections (quadriceps) in ambulatory aged male C57BL/6 mice (22-24 months) compared to saline-injected aged-matched controls. Secretome delivery substantially increased whole-body lean mass and decreased fat mass, corresponding to higher myofiber cross-sectional area and smaller adipocyte size, respectively. Secretome-treated mice also had greater whole-bod...

Arguing the Primacy of Predation in Determining Species Longevity
Researchers here review a variety of species and conclude that defense against predation is the most important determinant of species longevity. Long-lived species tend to have shells, or fly, or live underground. Evolution will not favor longevity until other factors reduce extrinsic mortality at the hands of predators. After that, proximate biochemical causes of longevity can come into play in what looks to be a wide variety of ways. Various environmental morphological and behavioral factors can determine the longevity of representatives of various taxa. Long-lived species develop systems aimed at increasing org...

Disability Activist: Take Great Care When Seeing Bias Toward Disabled Citizens
By RANDY SOUDERS During the years I served as Chairman of the Board for Jean Kennedy Smith’s Arts and Disability program, Very Special Arts (VSA at the Kennedy Center), I had there opportunity to meet a wide range of remarkable and courageous disabled Americans. Among the lasting friendships is a painter and visual artist, Randy Souders, who was rendered quadriplegic at the age of 17 in a 1972 accident. His concerns of late have been heightened by Trump and MAGA Republicans. I share his communication with his permission here in the hope that tech designers and others will be alert to the fact that great care is requir...

Wednesday Bible Study: Imprecatory prayer for terrorism
In Psalm 69, the protagonist has for unspecified reasons become an outcast, so he begs God to destroy his enemies. Check out verse 22 et seq. While this is attributed to David, there isn ' t really any point in David ' s story that would correspond to this situation. But petitioning God to commit mass violence is a common theme in the psalms. To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. A Psalm of David.69 Save me, O God!For the waters have come up to my neck.2 I sink in deep mire,    where there is no foothold;I have come into deep waters,    and the flood sweeps over me.3 ...

" A patient just arrived as a transfer for NSTEMI. "
Conclusion: Our THANKS to Dr. Frick for his detailed and highly insightful presentation. CREDIT to him for masterful correlation of clinical events to each ECG — that thoroughly supports his explanation of the successful treatment received by this patient with evolving LAD OMI.QUESTION: Isn ' t it so much EASIER with the lead-to-lead comparison facilitated by Figure-1  — to see the subtle-but-important evolution of ST-T wave changes that so closely correspond to clinical events?  (Source: Dr. Smith's ECG Blog)

Physicians can write their way to increased empathy
“When and how much?” I tried to recall the list of questions for intoxicated patients. A middle-aged man, much older than the demographics printed on the documents I hold, was writhing in pain, vomiting, and sobbing. The paper stated: chief complaint – mouse poison pellet ingestion, attempting suicide. “How and why?” I kept asking. I Read more… Physicians can write their way to increased empathy originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Collecting Data
This article shows how organizations are collecting it. Andrew Eye, CEO of the healthcare data science company ClosedLoop, estimates that about 15% of physicians collect SDoH-related data from patients and use it to assess their needs. The percentage is much higher in some areas. Data can be spotty, according to Eye, who says for instance that data from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) often lacks racial identifications. He also says that collecting and processing the data is labor-intensive, because it can be hard to persuade patients to talk openly about financial and logistical problems. At the institu...

Wednesday Bible Study: Going around in circles
The ridiculous repetition continues, and I ' m not sure what to do about it. This is incredibly boring. They just keep saying the same thing, over and over, at absurd length. I pledged we ' d read the whole damn thing however so in order to keep my word, we just need to plow ahead. Unfortunately, I must warn you, it goes on for quite a while longer in the same circles. This does give us a few popular cliches, e.g. nothing but skin and bones, the skin of my teeth. Whether that makes the whole thing worthwhile I can ' t say. Anyway I ' ll give you two chapters to try to get this over with as soon as possible.19 Then Job...

“PictureWhat” ??? Super-Human Poison Ivy. What’s Going On?
By MIKE MAGEE Connecticut loves its’ trees. And no town in Connecticut loves its’ trees more than West Hartford, CT. The town borders include an elaborate interconnected reservoir system that does double duty as a focal point for a wide range of nature paths for walkers, runners and cyclists. While walking one path yesterday, I came a tree with the healthiest upward advancing vine I had ever seen. My “PictureThis” app took no time to identify the plant. To my surprise, it was Toxicodendron radicans, known commonly as Poison Ivy. The description didn’t pull punches. It read, “In pop culture, poison ivy ...

Sunday Sermonette: Despair
Job responds with what amounts to despair. He wants to die, and he wants his despair to be respected. This soliloquy, and especially the second half of it in the next chapter, reminds me of Hamlet ' s " Oh that this too, too solid flesh would melt " soliloquy, the somewhat lesser known one. But as a literary critic, I would say that Shakespeare does it much more efficiently. This runs through an excessive amount of imagery to make a pretty simple statement.6 Then Job replied:2 “If only my anguish could be weighed    and all my misery be placed on the scales!3 It would surely outweigh th...
