Implications of oral dysbiosis and HPV infection in head and neck cancer: from molecular and cellular mechanisms to early diagnosis and therapy
Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the sixth most common type of cancer, with more than half a million new cases annually. This review focuses on the role of oral dysbiosis and HPV infection in HNCs, presenting the involved taxons, molecular effectors and pathways, as well as the HPV-associated particularities of genetic and epigenetic changes and of the tumor microenvironment occurred in different stages of tumor development. Oral dysbiosis is associated with the evolution of HNCs, through multiple mechanisms such as inflammation, genotoxins release, modulation of the innate and acquired immune response, carcinogens and antica...

Preoperative sleep-disordered breathing and craniofacial abnormalities are risk factors for postoperative sleep-disordered breathing in patients undergoing skin-flap oropharyngeal reconstruction surgery for oral cavity cancer: a prospective case-control study

Cervical Osteomyelitis and Diskitis as a Complication of Neopharyngeal Breakdown: A Multisite Case Series Review [HEAD AND NECK IMAGING]
SUMMARY: Laryngectomy and pharyngectomy are surgical options for advanced laryngeal or pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Cervical osteomyelitis-diskitis, occurring when there is dehiscence of the posterior neopharyngeal wall, is an uncommon complication of laryngopharyngectomy. This case series describes imaging findings of pharyngoesophageal wall breakdown with subsequent cervical spine infection and demonstrates that most of these patients had undergone prior esophageal or neopharyngeal dilations for benign posttreatment stricture. Neck pain, fever, or serologic evidence of infection should prompt careful evaluation fo...

Radiation-induced long-term dysphagia in survivors of head and neck cancer and association with dose-volume parameters
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term dysphagia was associated with higher age, being female, and high MD-MPCM. Doses to distally located SWOAR seemed to be risk factors. Existing NTCP models do not sufficiently predict long-term dysphagia. Further efforts are needed to reduce the prevalence and consequences of this late effect.PMID:38061420 | DOI:10.1016/j.radonc.2023.110044 (Source: Radiotherapy and Oncology : journal of the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology)

Outcomes for 160 Consecutive Lateral Arm Free Flaps for Head and Neck Reconstruction
CONCLUSION: The lateral arm free flap was safe, versatile, and reliable for head and neck reconstruction with low donor-site morbidity. Complications occurred in a fifth of patients and were associated with peripheral vascular disease, pharyngeal defects, and vein grafts.PMID:38037485 | DOI:10.1002/ohn.596 (Source: Hand Surgery)

56. Cross-sectional study of the physical functioning of head and neck cancer survivors up to one year post treatment in an Irish National Cancer Centre
Head and Neck cancer (HNC) incorporates cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, nasal cavity and sinuses. People living with HNC experience similar survivorship needs to other cancer types, yet unique biopsychosocial issues. Little is known about their global physical function. The primary aim of this study was to profile the physical function of HNC survivors following completion of their treatment. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Correlation of Intra-tumoral and Peripheral PD-1/PD-L1 Immunity in Head and Neck Cancer
CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate significant connections between systemic and intra-tumoral PD-1/PD-L1 immune patterns, both of which may serve as promising combined biomarkers for treatment decisions in patients with head and neck cancer.PMID:38030173 | DOI:10.21873/anticanres.16738 (Source: Cell Research)

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy with or without nimotuzumab in the treatment of locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a retrospective study
CONCLUSION: The concurrent chemoradiotherapy plus nimotuzumab after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma achieved a higher complete remission rate and significantly improved distant metastasis-free survival compared with concurrent chemoradiotherapy alone. Additionally, an increasing trend was observed in progression-free survival, and the incidence of side effects was similar in both groups.PMID:37996813 | DOI:10.1186/s12885-023-11608-5 (Source: Cancer Control)

Serum Colorectal Neoplasia Differentially Expressed Level and Prognostic Factors in Patients with RLNM of NPC
CONCLUSIONS: An abnormal increase in serum CRNDE can be a basis to diagnose RLNM in NPC patients. RLNM affected the long-term prognosis of NPC patients, and the number and diameter of lymph nodes and posterior pharyngeal metastasis were the factors affecting patients' long-term. The current study's findings can provide a reference for the realization of the early diagnosis of NPC RLNM, formulating the treatment schemes and improving the long-term survival outcome of NPC patients.PMID:37944952 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)
