Riddle of the Sphinx: Emerging role of circular RNAs in cervical cancer
Pathol Res Pract. 2024 Apr 17;257:155315. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2024.155315. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCervical cancer is a prominent cause of cancer-related mortality among women, with recent attention directed toward exploring the involvement of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in this particular cancer. CircRNAs, characterized by a covalently closed loop structure, belong to a class of single-stranded non-coding RNA (ncRNA) molecules that play crucial roles in cancer development and progression through diverse mechanisms. The abnormal expression of circRNAs in vivo is significantly associated with the development of cervical c...

Dendritic cell-derived exosome (DEX) therapy for digestive system cancers: Recent advances and future prospect
Pathol Res Pract. 2024 Apr 6;257:155288. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2024.155288. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTumor-mediated immunosuppression is a fundamental obstacle to the development of dendritic cell (DC)-based cancer vaccines, which despite their ability to stimulate host anti-tumor CD8 T cell immunity, have not been able to generate meaningful therapeutic responses. Exosomes are inactive membrane vesicles that are nanoscale in size and are produced by the endocytic pathway. They are essential for intercellular communication. Additionally, DC-derived exosomes (DEXs) contained MHC class I/II (MHCI/II), which is frequently c...

Progesterone amplifies allergic inflammation and airway pathology in association with higher lung ILC2 responses
Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.1152/ajplung.00207.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPerimenstrual worsening of asthma occurs in up to 40% of asthmatic women, leading to increased acute exacerbations requiring clinical care. The role of sex hormones during these times remains unclear. In the current study, we used a translational approach to determine whether progesterone exacerbates allergic inflammation in the traditional OVA model in BALB/c mice. Simultaneously, we used PBMC from healthy human donors to assess the effects of progesterone on circulating ILC2. Briefly, lungs of ovarectomized (OV...

Medullary Thyroid Cancer: Single Institute Experience over Three Decades and Risk Factors for Recurrence
CONCLUSION: One of 4 patients undergoing surgery for MTC will recur. Risk factors associated with recurrence are male gender, lateral LN metastasis and high/highest MTC risk level mutations, but not necessarily surgery type. Preoperative calcitonin>2,175 pg/mL is suggestive of advanced disease and should prompt further evaluation.PMID:38651609 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae279 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

Case Report of a Hidden Intruder-Extremely Rare Presentation of Hydatidosis as a Nuchal Tumoural Mass
We report the case of a 68-year-old male patient, a zootechnic, who presented at the hospital with a tumoural mass (dimension: about 12/10 cm) located in the nuchal region. The complex approach needed consisted of surgical therapy along with histopathological confirmation of the diagnostic and antiparasitic medication, which led to a complete recovery with a low probability of recurrence. Discussion: Encounters with patients with primary soft tissue hydatidosis are exceptionally rare, but the surgeon must take into consideration this clinical diagnosis, especially for patients located in an endemic region with occupations ...

PD-L1 blockade in mitigating severe acute pancreatitis induced pancreatic damage through modulation of immune cell apoptosis
Int Immunopharmacol. 2024 Apr 22;133:112081. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2024.112081. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute pancreatitis (AP) is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder. The immune response plays a crucial role in AP progression. However, the impact of immune regulatory checkpoint PD-L1 on severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) remains uncertain. Hence, this study aimed to examine the influence of PD-L1 on SAP. We assessed PD-L1 expression in neutrophils and monocytes obtained from SAP patients. We induced SAP in C57BL/6J mice, PD-L1 gene-deficient mice, and PD-L1 humanized mice using intraperitoneal injections of cerulein ...
