The complexity of extracellular vesicles: Bridging the gap between cellular communication and neuropathology
In this report, we review the roles that extracellular vesicles can play in biological processes and cellular dysfunction and pathobiology, particularly neurodegenerative diseases. We also examine the potential translational impacts of extracellular vesicles in diagnostics and therapeutic development. ER: endoplasmic reticulum; ROS: reactive oxygen species. AbstractBrain-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) serve a prominent role in maintaining homeostasis and contributing to pathology in health and disease. This review establishes a crucial link between physiological processes leading to EV biogenesis and their impacts on...

Arthroscopic Management of the Contact Athlete with Anterior Instability
Anterior glenohumeral instability is one of the most common injuries suffered from sport. Despite padding and conditioning, the shoulder joint remains particularly vulnerable to injury, especially in the setting of contact. The overall rate of anterior instability is reported to be 0.12 injuries per 1000 athlete exposures, although this is increased up to 0.40 to 0.51 in the contact athlete. Successful treatment requires consideration of restoring stability while minimizing loss of glenohumeral motion. Common treatment strategies involve addressing the pathology that results from anterior shoulder dislocation including lab...

A case of fatal poisoning caused by etomidate: evidence from pathological and toxicological analyses
This report describes a rare case of a 47-year-old man who died from acute intoxication after oral ingestion of liquid containing etomidate. The cause of death was conclusively attributed to etomidate based on a comprehensive investigation, including autopsy, histopathological examination, toxicological analysis, and biochemical analysis. This is the first reported case of a fatality solely resulting from the oral ingestion of etomidate, which can provide valuable insights for future forensic investigations involving etomidate poisoning. Therefore, it is imperative to share this case with the scientific community. (Source:...

Targeted linked-read sequencing for direct haplotype phasing of parental GJB2/SLC26A4 alleles: A universal and dependable noninvasive prenatal diagnosis method applied to autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss in at-risk families
Noninvasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) for autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss (ARNSHL) has been rarely reported until recent years. However, the previous method could not be performed on challenging genome loci (e.g. CNVs, deletions, inversions, or gene recombinants) or on families without proband genotype. Here, this study assesses the performance of relative haplotype dosage analysis (RHDO)-based NIPD for identifying fetal genotyping in pregnancies at risk of ARNSHL. Fifty couples carrying pathogenic variants associated with ARNSHL in either GJB2 or SLC26A4 were recruited. (Source: Journal of Molecular Diagnostics)

Isolated Langerhans cell histiocytosis in the stomach of adults: four-case series and literature review
We examined four cases (one female, three males) of gastric LCH. The affected patients were between 33 and 70 years of age. Endoscopically, three patients presented with a solitary polyp or elevated lesions, whereas one patient showed no abnormalities. Under a microscope, all cases showed abnormal proliferation of histiocytoid cells infiltrating in a nested or sheet-like fashion. The tumor cells were medium-sized, with a slightly eosinophilic cytoplasm, irregular or renal-shaped nuclei, folded nuclear membranes, visible nuclear grooves, and the infiltration of inflammatory cells in the background. Immunohistochemically, al...

Association between coca chewing (Erythroxylum coca) habit and oral squamous cell carcinoma. A case-control study from Argentina
Previous isolated reports have hypothesized that chewing coca leaves, a pre-Columbian tradition found in certain regions of South America, may be associated with the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Coca chewing (CC) is a habit that shares many characteristics with the well-known practice of betel chewing observed in Asia. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between CC and OSCC among patients who attended the Se ñor del Milagro Hospital in Salta, Argentina. The time-dependent expression of FPR2 and ANXA1 in murine deep vein thrombosis model and its relation to thrombus age
In this study, we investigated the time-dependent expressions of formyl peptide receptor 2 (FPR2) and Annexin A1 (ANXA1) in a stasis-induced deep vein thrombosis (DVT) murine model, with the aim of obtaining useful information for thrombus age timing. A total of 75 ICR mice were randomly classified into thrombosis group and control group. In thrombosis group, a DVT model was established by ligating the inferior vena cava (IVC) of mice, and thrombosed IVCs were harvested at 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, and 21  days after modeling. In control group, IVCs without thrombosis were taken as control samples. The expressions of FPR2 and A...

Imaging manifestations of papillary glioneuronal tumors
AbstractTo analyse the imaging findings of papillary glioneuronal tumors (PGNTs), in order to improve the accuracy of preoperative diagnosis of this tumor. The clinical and imaging manifestations of 36 cases of PGNT confirmed by pathology were analyzed retrospectively. A total of 17 males and 19 females, averaging 22.47 ( ± 11.23) years. Initial symptoms included epilepsy in ten, headache in seven, and others in 19 cases. 97.2% (35/36) of the lesions were located in the supratentorial area, and 80.5% (29/36) in the intraventricular or deep white matter adjacent to the lateral ventricles. Twenty-four of the lesions (66.7...
