Experience with the utilization of new-generation shared-control robotic system for spinal instrumentation
CONCLUSIONS: From this single-center, single-surgeon series we conclude that robot-assisted spine surgery can be safely and efficiently integrated into the operating room workflow, which improves after a learning curve of approximately 20 operative interventions. We found robot-assisted spinal instrumentation to be reliable, safe, effective and highly precise.PMID:38619188 | DOI:10.23736/S0390-5616.24.06206-4 (Source: Journal of Neurosurgical Sciences)

Cerebral malaria pathogenesis: Dissecting the role of CD4 < sup > + < /sup > and CD8 < sup > + < /sup > T-cells as major effectors in disease pathology
Int Rev Immunol. 2024 Apr 15:1-18. doi: 10.1080/08830185.2024.2336539. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCerebral malaria (CM) is a severe complication of Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) infection, with complex pathogenesis involving multiple factors, including the host's immunological response. T lymphocytes, specifically CD4+ T helper cells and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells, are crucial in controlling parasite growth and activating cells for parasite clearance via cytokine secretion. Contrary to this, reports also suggest the pathogenic nature of T lymphocytes as they are often involved in disease progression and severity. CD...

COVID-19 Pandemic: Impact and rapid reaction of Urology
Actas Urol Esp. 2020 Sep;44(7):450-457. doi: 10.1016/j.acuro.2020.04.006. Epub 2020 Apr 24.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has caused tens of thousands of deaths in Spain and has managed to breakdown the healthcare system hospitals in the Community of Madrid, largely due to its tendency to cause severe pneumonia, requiring ventilatory support. This fact has caused our center to collapse, with 130% of its beds occupied by COVID-19 patients, thus causing the absolute cessation of activity of the urology service, the practical disappearance of resident training programs, and the incorporation of a...

Critical Care: What You May Have Missed in 2023
This article highlights 10 important pieces of research from 2023 (and 1 from 2022) in critical care. The literature was screened for new evidence relevant to internal medicine physicians and hospitalists whose focus of practice is not critical care but who may be taking care of seriously ill patients. The articles highlight the diverse spectrum of pathology and interplay of various specialties that go into critical care. Topics include transfusion medicine, fluid resuscitation, safe intubation practices and respiratory failure, and the management of acute ischemic stroke. Several trials are groundbreaking, forcing clinici...

The confidence and competence of speech language pathologists in augmentative and alternative communication: a scoping review
Augment Altern Commun. 2024 Apr 15:1-14. doi: 10.1080/07434618.2024.2333383. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAugmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a core component of speech pathology practice. However, international literature has highlighted that speech language pathologists (SLPs) may not feel confident or competent in this area. Confidence and competence are critical factors in therapy as they can impact the quality-of-service provision. The purpose of this scoping review was to investigate the confidence/competence of SLPs in AAC. A systematic scoping search was conducted using four databases to identify r...

Teleconsultation in a coloproctology unit during the COVID-19 pandemic. Preliminary results
CONCLUSION: In the context of a pandemic, teleconsultation has allowed 61% of follow-up visits to be definitively solved, avoiding the reprogramming of 116 patients. The new social and health paradigm after the pandemic will require a rethinking of our healthcare model, and in many aspects, telemedicine can offer tools for this.PMID:38620628 | PMC:PMC7342026 | DOI:10.1016/j.ciresp.2020.06.019 (Source: Cirugia eEspanola)

Malformation of the endoplasmic reticulum system evolving into giant inclusions and Auer bodies in acute promyelocytic leukemia: an ultrastructural study of 6 cases
This study describes a series of giant inclusions and Auer bodies in promyeloblasts in six patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cytochemical stains. TEM revealed that giant inclusions and pro-Auer bodies were associated with rER and surrounded by tubular structures composed of degenerated or redundant membrane in promyeloblasts, which corresponded with elements of the ER system. This paper reveals that in the promyeloblasts of APL, ER is the source of and transforms progressively into giant inclusions and Auer bodies.PMID:38619116 | DOI:10.1080/01...

"Ultrastructural changes of platelets in COVID-19 and chronic viral hepatitis patients "
Ultrastruct Pathol. 2024 Apr 15:1-12. doi: 10.1080/01913123.2024.2342437. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPlatelet-viral interactions are evolving as a new concern. Coagulation disorder is a major consequence of the COVID-19 infection. In chronic hepatitis virus infections, defect in coagulation factors, thrombocytopenia and platelet function abnormalities are common. A SARS-CoV-2 infection on top of chronic viral hepatitis infection can be common in areas where viral hepatitis is endemic. Here, we investigate the platelet ultrastructural changes and estimate the serum platelet factor-4 (PF-4), ferritin, CRP, and D-dimer in ...

Effects of < em > Artemisia absinthium < /em > on broiler chicken coccidiosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
This study aims to evaluate the effect of Artemisia absinthium on coccidiosis in broilers through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The article selection process included a search from the year 2000 to February 2021, with no restrictions on country or geographical region. Our objective was met by only six (06) studies, which underwent systematic review. The meta-analysis was conducted using the metafor package in R via RStudio (version 1.1.383; RStudio, Inc.).The systematic review indicates that in vivo studies have shown the effectiveness of various plant extracts (essential oil and methanolic extract) when administe...

Reappraisal of the morphological and morphometric study of the psoas minor muscle with clinical and developmental insights: cadaveric study
CONCLUSIONS: Findings confirm the inconsistency of PMi in the study population. Morphological variations became more evident as the tendon approached the insertion level. The muscle's distal attachment to the iliac fascia may partially control the position, mechanical stability of the underlying iliopsoas and this circumstantial function may be clinically related to iliopsoas inflammation and pathology. However, further studies recommended to determine biomechanical validity and clinical applicability of this vestigial muscle in human.PMID:38619066 | DOI:10.5603/fm.99128 (Source: Folia Morphologica)
