How is your scope stage?
This is 30 years, approximately 1M+ slides stage polishing. Better than steel wool but more time consuming.🤣 (Source: Student Doctor Network)

GI fee per slide
I am a pathologist recently approached by a GI colleague to consider reading biopsies that they will start taking in an in office endoscopy facility. What is the current fair market fee for this type of arrangement (fee per slide/jar)?. I have heard anywhere from $11 to $30 per slide/jar/88305. This is one of a few places where I have seen this discussed and would greatly appreciate any feedback to decide whether to consider this. Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Disadvantage as a reapplicant
I wanted to get some advice on reapplying to pathology after I failed to match radiology this year. I’m from a lower-mid tier MD school. Worked as histotech in the past and performed IHC in a research lab during med school and should have 1 pub from that this year. Step 1: 235-240 Step 2: 245-250 I honestly don’t know what I was thinking applying to radiology. If anyone has any insight about my chances to match this cycle, I would love to hear your opinion. Thank you (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Quinnipiac vs RFU
I am from MA and interested in either pathology or radiology residency programs. I am truly split between the two schools. The most important factor for me is the ability to set me up for the best residency spot possible and I ideally would like to do my residency in New England. I find it hard to compare the residency placements because quin is so much smaller than RFU so of course a specialty like pathology is rarely going to be covered in their match. RFU has like maybe one or two... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pathology thoughts? Lifestyle specialty? Why not desired?
Hello everyone! I am an incoming medical student who is debating on a bunch of specialties. I was wondering why pathology has not been as desired by medical students? I have heard about their lifestyles being nice and the pay isn’t too bad either so wondering why this field is not super popular. I know that you would need to take an elective during your fourth year to explore the field more and maybe medical school courses don’t really have too much exposure to the pathology field but still... How do I overcome being a reapplicant from another specialty?
I recently did not match radiology but will be entering PGY1 in a transitional year during which time I will apply Pathology. I initially wanted to Pathology in my first 2 years of med school but changed my mind to radiology because of life experience and exposure my 3rd year. Being a reapplicant and changing my mind back and forth are red flags. I also have a gap in education (medical leave of absence) that is another red flag. I'm kind of feeling overwhelmed because Pathology was always... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

path or surg? help me decide
Wrapping up MS3 and having a quarter life crisis, as many of us are wont to do at this stage. Anyway, I had toyed with the idea of pathology as an MS1 because I really loved histo and sucked at OSCEs (i.e pt interaction made me nervous). However, I have always had surgery in mind since something that really motivates me is developing skills and constantly having to improve my hands-on abilities. I started with surgery as my first rotation and really loved it, so I began making connections... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

We are the EMTALA experts
Hi All, As EPs, we see incredibly diverse pathology, yet our scope of practice is hopelessly narrow, with few actionable goals outside of the occasional airway, central line, sedation, cardioversion, or (knock on wood) the ultra rare emergency cesarean or surgical airway. In most cases, our sickest patients must be passed along to our colleagues in other fields who have more expertise, and yet these colleagues often take advantage of this power imbalance to treat patients callously, cross... MD - > path residency vs clinical chemistry fellowship for a PhD holder
At a turning point in my career. My original goal was MD/PhD -> path. A desired career heavy in research/clinical trails, and method/technology development in diagnostics (i.e I want to develop new ways to diagnose from lab). Medical school kept being postponed because of life until my MCAT expired. In the mean time, I was working in industry (diagnostics research). My partner had to move close to family, and I happen to know a postdoc in a university where we are moving. In short, got a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Virginia-Maryland vs Penn
Hello! I have been accepted to both Virginia-Maryland and PennVet I am very grateful for this but it is a very hard decision for me. I am most interested in ambulatory large animal medicine but also have an interest in pathology. I do plan to visit. What was the deciding factor for people who chose each school? I really loved each school and am trying to figure out how to decide between the two. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated! Thank you (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Anybody else hiring?
We've had an open posting for a cytopath for a solid 8 months with very few applicants. Great job, 95th percentile earnings, no travel, no autopsies. Nothing but crickets. Big part of the problem seems to be that most people coming out of residency are FMGs who require visa sponsorship which we can't/won't do. Thanks again academic medicine. I've heard rumors that some of the Labcrap hubs are so understaffed that their biopsy TATs are running about a month. So at least some good is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Buying Used Microscopes
I bought a brand spanking new BX43 2 years ago. I like it. But I don't know if it is worth the price tag, in retrospect. I recall during residency using a variety of Olympus and Nikon scopes, some new, some old, but they mostly worked just fine for me. In any event, I'm looking at buying a used scope (probably BX43 or similar model), but I am leery of websites like "microscopecentral.com" or some other low rent name that doesn't pass the smell test. Does anyone have a recommendation of... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
