What would you do
Say your PA or resident or fellow pathologist was grossing a large specimen. They had to leave the gross room, but knew they would be back within a few minutes, so they soaked paper towels in saline and covered the specimen. When they returned, the grossing table was empty and they found the specimen and paper towels were in the trash can. A lab employee had entered the empty gross room, saw the paper towels, picked up everything, not ‘knowing’ there was tissue there, and threw it all in... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

outside biopsy path reports at your institution before surgery
Isn't it standard of care for a surgeon to scan in a patient's diagnostic pathology report into the hospital EMR where the patient is having surgery, if the diagnostic pathology report was performed elsewhere? Isn't this usually required in hospital bylaws or something, in order for good patient care? (Currently working locums in area where most surgeons are independent. previously worked in large hospital system where all surgeons were employees and most diagnostic biopsies went straight... OUWB vs. SUNY Buffalo
I have these two schools in my mind and would appreciate any feedback! Specialty considerations: Pathology, IM, or IM-PM (dual specialty- internal and preventative med) For those who don't know - SO means significant other! OUWB Pros • Suburban • Beaumont System • More school options for SO to apply to PhD programs nearby (including Oakland U) • Free computer for all students (why not lol) • Technically more residency options to apply to/stay in Michigan? (b/c of the different... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Percent of collections a pathologist can expect to take home and lab director fee
Can any one in the private practice world comment on what is a reasonable percentage for the pathologist to take home from total collections or total billable units (50%? higher or lower?) as well as what is the typical lab director fee (as a % of your total lab revenue)? Should I expect to take a percentage of the professional fee as well? Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Non-oropharyngeal HNSCC and HPV
I was wondering what your take is concerning HPV in non-oropharyngeal HNSCC. Data seem to point out towards better prognosis, but I have not found any deescalation trials looking at non-oropharyngeal HNSCC. I saw a new patient with an oral cavity HNSCC post surgery who has never smoked. HPV status had not been determined so far and the pathologist suggested to determine it. I am wondering if this result would influence my management. The indication for RT is clear in this patient due to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Adding photos to path reports
We have a GI group that insists we add pictures of the patients’ biopsies on all path reports. Granted, it’s only one photo per report i.e. if it’s a multi-part specimen with 5 jars, we still only pick one biopsy to take a picture of. It may only take an extra fifteen to twenty seconds to snap a pic (I've timed it for the camera software to load, get the photo in focus, and resume in the report where I left off), but we get a lot of GI biopsies. Add that up over the course of a day, week... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

regenerative medicine key papers
I"m getting some pushback from my orthopedic partners regarding PRP and I need to summarize the current data for them. There are so many papers out on PRP. I would appreciate your help if you could guide me to the seminal papers, or rather key papers with the best statistical evidence for PRP with key peripheral joint/tendon issues. (For knee OA, lateral epicondylitis, rotator cuff, etc). Key papers using PRP for other pathology, are also appreciated Thank you (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pathology not as bad as I thought?
After discussion with other members on this forum I have realized how wrong I was in my assessment of the pathology job market. In confirmation, I had talked to some senior academic pathologists who were saying how trainees only seem to care about money and stability losing sight of the professional aspect of pathology. They also had many good points about how trainees aren't ready out of residency (not because of lack of training) but that pathology has become so complicated that require...
