Future of pathology (technology-wise)
I see a lot of negativity about starting a career in pathology on these forums, and a lot of it seems to revolve around the financial aspects of the US healthcare system. I'm a fresh anatomic pathology resident in an EU country and I'm concerned whether I made a mistake entering path. However, the situation in my country is that the hospital putting you through residency will keep you as an attending 100%. Healthcare is mostly state-owned and hospitals (and the health ministry) are run by... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What happened to the pathology sticky threads?
Remember the sticky thread we used to have? e.g. 'Open jobs', Useful pathology websites, Residency FAQ's. Anyone know why they're gone? They applied more to med students/residents, but a lot of people contributed to them (including myself), and they contained useful info. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Osler Clinical Pathology Online Review
Good day! Does anyone have input on the Osler Clinical Pathology 2022 Online review? Is it worth it? I wanted to know the topics being discussed, how many hours per lecture, are these all videos? I dont see any detailed description on their website about the online review. It has a 3 month and 12 month review period. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Skin cancer path
How do your pathologists report out squamous cell cancer, particularly from head and neck? We get: 1) the fact that it is squamous 2) margins negative or positive Nothing else - no size, no PNI, no grade, no LVSI, no DOI. And, this is not the first place that does this. I have been at least 3 centers that report it out this way. What do your pathologists do? The CAP for squamous cell of the head and neck says all this should be reported out. AP lab sold to Labcorp
The group I work for contracts with a local health system, who recently sold their AP labs (histo, cyto) to Labcorp. I am curious to see if anyone has seen a set up like this and what could be the implications for the pathologists moving forward? There hasn't been any changes to my contract with the group but I'm fresh out of training so less familiar with the business side of things. TIA. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Apparently we are "behind the times"...
This was a quote from a CEO I spoke with this morning when I learned that a significant portion of my hospital GI work is likely going to be heading out the door to a GI group's privately owned pathology lab. Apparently, in our neck of the woods, the cash grab from GI groups hasn't been fully realized until recently. The hospital is opening up an ASC as a joint venture with a local GI group and essentially giving them carte blanche so long as they keep providing hospital coverage. This... FDA approves 'SKOUT' - a new AI device to detect colon polyps
https://www.cancertherapyadvisor.com/home/cancer-topics/gastrointestinal-cancers/fda-clears-skout-to-detect-colorectal-polyps-in-real-time-during-colonoscopy/ Interesting article that leads to more questions: Does FDA approval mean gastroenterologists can bill more for using the device vs standard colonoscopy? If so, will insurance companies reimburse for it? And on the path end, does this mean receiving more or less colon biopsies if this becomes widely adopted? I could see... Adult ICU vs peds ICU (procedures, pathology, etc.)
Peds-trained here, currently in pediatric ICU training. Hearing a lot more about individuals that do both peds and adult ICU ultimately. Curious as to what types of pathology and procedures adult ICU has less exposure to when compared to peds ICU? In peds, something I think sets us apart is the complex congenital heart post-op patients. For us, we also do a fair amount of intubations > peripheral A-lines > CVLs > fem A-lines > chest tubes. It appears that adult CCM does essentially... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Mba
Hi everybody, What do you think of pathologists pursuing an MBA? It seems that there is a lack of business involvement from pathologists, and the lab seems to be like its own entreprise apart from the hospital. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Going for residency with very few fellowships ?
Some of the residencies I am interviewing at have very few fellowships, and don’t have peds path that right now I think might be my top choice . One of them doesn’t even have a peds fellowship in the area, 3 of them have one in the area but it’s not theirs. Can someone experienced in path please talk me through advantages and disadvantages of going to a program with very few fellowships ? And not have a local fellowship in your field of interest? I don’t want to make a mistake I’ll regret... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What ’s with peds pathology ?
Applied to residency now . Relatively competitive, no red flags . From rotations alone I like peds path, and want to take a deeper look during residency . Noticed that very few ppl go for peds path . Why ? Is the market bad? Low pay ? What do I need to know ? (Fyi - ideally trying to go to Texas for family reasons, but will consider anywhere) (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Are "Ivory Tower" academic pathology programs actually accessible to regular MD students?
I was looking at this table (below) for stats of the "test scores and experiences of first year residents" published by the AAMC. I was a little blown away by the number of publications in the upper 75th and 90th percentile, as these rival or surpass other specialties like IM, general surgery, vascular surgery, etc. I'm doing a research year in path right now, but it feels like I would need to do a PhDs worth of work to get into the higher level academic residencies. Looking at the "Current... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Digital Pathology And Working from Home or Abroad?
Anyone here knows of any pathologist working at home or abroad full time signing out cases via digital pathology? I personally don’t know of any. I wouldn’t mind living in another country signing out cases for a living just to enjoy life a little more. If not, anyone knows how much longer before something like this becomes feasible lol? I mean if I can spend a few months in Bora Bora or Hawaii, I would love it. I enjoy traveling and experiencing other cultures. If I could do it while I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
