Private Practice Pathology Business Model in full collapse now
Anyone have any clue wth is going on in groups near them? Im seeing a near panic levels of recruitment for either FT or PT staff pathologists but wages dont seem to be moving. And Im seeing 3-4 month blocks needed that are comically impossible to cover. Is this pregnancy leave for the giant gender flux occurring? I have never seen locums needs that long before in this volume. Is the arbitrage model of private practice owners now officially dead?? Is there is literally zero income... Pathology resident suicide
So I have learned of a residency program from an IM friend in Missouri that a pathology resident committed suicide earlier this year. I haven’t heard any other news about it but I thought I would share since it has been so silent. From what I understand it sounds like the resident went to a malignant place. Mental health is so important and so under appreciated. Make sure you take care of your self. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

I'm sure this will work out well
Pathology hospitalists in place at UMich - CAP TODAY I'll sum up the article, as I understand it: Pathology has become so hyperspecialized by the intentional designs of pathology academic departments, that junior faculty who are experts in their niche are completely useless as general surgical pathologists and by proxy in frozen sections. So rather than go back to practical basics which is the standard we've all been held to in private practice, the solution is to create a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Microscopic descriptions
Does anyone do them on all cases? I think its completely worthless in a vast majority of cases with the exception of a few. For some reason some of the people in my group say it provides some sort of legal protection. This makes zero sense to me. If you say you didnt see something and its there, how does that protect you? My attendings in residency (from a top 5 program) who did alot of legal cases said its a bad idea to avoid inconsistencies. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How do you label your blocks?
Just some idle curiosity about a light-hearted topic. I've trained exclusively one way and the other is totally abhorrent to me when I get outside cases like this. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Last minute advice for AP boards?
I'm taking the AP boards on the first week of the window (this upcoming Monday) and CP one week after. Any last second wisdom anyone wants to impart? I'm feeling quite chill for AP, so it's more a question of practical tips for the day or whatever. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How hard is it to get matched somewhere in California?
My goal is to get matched somewhere in CA, which is where I'm from and where all my family is. As a reminder, we are talking: UCLA USC UCI Cedars Sinai Loma Linda UCI UC Davis UCSD Stanford Most of these places are pretty competitive, right? How worried should I be worried as a current M2 about getting honors in pre-clinical and clerkships, my class ranking, publishing research, etc? My Step 1 score will be pass/fail as well, so I am not sure how... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

CAP Pathologist Leadership Conference
So there was a CAP Pathologist Leadership meeting over the weekend. Was anyone there who would like to talk about what was discussed during the workforce discussion? Reading some of these tweets, a few things stuck out… Apparently there is a pathology resident shortage? I LMAO at this. Dr Mills, around where I live there are 25-30 residents being put out every year (not including fellows). Jobs are very few. Few as in I can count the number of jobs on my one hand and you really think... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Moonlighting as a Pathology Resident
Does anyone have experience in moonlighting during Path residency? I have two opportunities that are opening up for moonlighting, one internal and one external. The internal opportunity would be performing additional autopsies for the attendings at our academic hospital practice (proposed compensation would be 80% of professional fee). The external opportunity is performing disability exams for the state on weekends. I imagine both would be fairly lucrative in comparison to resident... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
