Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1570: Machine Learning Applied to Pre-Operative Computed-Tomography-Based Radiomic Features Can Accurately Differentiate Uterine Leiomyoma from Leiomyosarcoma: A Pilot Study
Conclusions: CECT images integrated with radiomics have great potential in differentiating uterine leiomyomas from leiomyosarcomas. Such a tool can be used to mitigate the risks of eventual surgical spread in the case of leiomyosarcoma and allow for safer fertility-sparing treatment in patients with benign uterine lesions. Clinical implications of VUS reclassification in a single-centre series from application of ACMG/AMP classification rules specified for BRCA1/2
Conclusions These results demonstrated the effectiveness of new BRCA1/2 ACMG/AMP classification guidelines for VUS classification within a clinical cohort, and their important clinical impact. Furthermore, they suggested a cadence of no more than 3 years for regular review of VUSs, which however requires time, expertise and resources. (Source: Journal of Medical Genetics)

Volumetric segmentation in the context of posterior fossa-related pathologies: a systematic review
ConclusionsVarious forms of segmentation techniques have been used to assess posterior fossa volumes/pathologies and each has its advantages and disadvantages. We discuss these nuances and summarize the current state of literature in the context of posterior fossa-associated pathologies. (Source: Neurosurgical Review)

X-Ray-Based 3D Histopathology of the Kidney Using Cryogenic Contrast-Enhanced MicroCT
Int J Biomed Imaging. 2024 Apr 9;2024:3924036. doi: 10.1155/2024/3924036. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThe kidney's microstructure, which comprises a highly convoluted tubular and vascular network, can only be partially revealed using classical 2D histology. Considering that the kidney's microstructure is closely related to its function and is often affected by pathologies, there is a need for powerful and high-resolution 3D imaging techniques to visualize the microstructure. Here, we present how cryogenic contrast-enhanced microCT (cryo-CECT) allowed 3D visualization of glomeruli, tubuli, and vasculature. By comparing differe...

Bessel's disease-the first report of an IgG4-related disorder
Z Rheumatol. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1007/s00393-024-01502-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMany aspects of IgG4-related diseases were initially described during the late 19th and early 20th century. A variety of clinical presentations caused by this common pathology have been named after the researchers who first described the disorders, such as Mikulicz, Küttner, Riedel or Ormond. However, the initial description of retroperitoneal fibrosis dates back to even 50 years earlier, when in 1846, the Prussian private practitioner Raphael Jakob Kosch described a hitherto unknown constellation of symptoms and pathological findings...

Immunohistochemical and Histopathological Characterization of Spina Bifida Defect Tissues Removed After Prenatal and Postnatal Surgical Repair
Conclusion: Tissues harvested from prenatal and postnatal spina bifida repair surgeries appear as normal skin near the defect site. However, cystic tissues consist of highly dense fibrous connective tissue with complete absence of normal epidermal development.PMID:38634787 | DOI:10.1080/15513815.2024.2326834 (Source: Fetal and Pediatric Pathology)

Uremia Impedes Skeletal Myocyte Myomixer Expression and Fusogenic Activity: Implication for Uremic Sarcopenia
Am J Pathol. 2024 May;194(5):759-771. doi: 10.1016/j.ajpath.2024.01.005.ABSTRACTIn patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), skeletal muscle mass and function are known to occasionally decline. However, the muscle regeneration and differentiation process in uremia has not been extensively studied. In mice with CKD induced by adenine-containing diet, the tibialis anterior muscle injured using a barium chloride injection method recovered poorly as compared to control mice. In the cultured murine skeletal myocytes, stimulation with indoxyl sulfate (IS), a representative uremic toxin, morphologically jeopardized the differen...

The Silva pattern-based classification for HPV-associated endocervical adenocarcinoma: A single institution concordance study of trainees and gynecologic pathologists
Pathol Res Pract. 2024 Apr 16;257:155311. doi: 10.1016/j.prp.2024.155311. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Silva pattern-based classification of HPV-associated endocervical adenocarcinoma has become an integral part of the histologic assessment of these tumors. Unfortunately, the Silva system reproducibility has had mixed results in past studies, and clinical practice still favors the FIGO stage assessment in directing therapeutic interventions for patients. In our study, we aimed to assess our institution's concordance including not only gynecologic pathologists, but also pathology trainees through a series of 69 cases. ...

Auditing plasma transfusion in intensive care: Use of decision time interval analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with traditional methods of displaying the results of blood audits, DTI analysis displays information regarding the decision both to transfuse and to not transfuse. Utilization reviews that display data based on decision time analysis reveal clinical practice patterns very different from those suggested by traditional displays of plasma audit data.PMID:38635300 | DOI:10.1093/ajcp/aqae041 (Source: American Journal of Clinical Pathology)

Warm reactive autoantibodies detected by solid phase technology: Patient characteristics, laboratory features, and clinical significance
CONCLUSIONS: Warm reactive autoantibodies are more likely to be hemolytic, have strongly reactive indirect and direct antiglobulin tests, remain reactive in tube-based ancillary testing methods, and are seen primarily in patients with hematologic disorders.PMID:38637286 | DOI:10.1093/ajcp/aqae039 (Source: American Journal of Clinical Pathology)

Spinal neuronal activity and neuroinflammatory component in a mouse model of CFA-induced vestibulodynia
In conclusion, our study provides a comprehensive understanding of the CFA-induced model of vestibulodynia, encompassing behavioral, neurophysiological and neuroinflammatory aspects. These data pave the way to investigate spinal cord first pain plasticity in vestibulodynia.PMID:38636564 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbi.2024.04.012 (Source: Brain, Behavior, and Immunity)

The role of ischemia-modified albumin, presepsin, delta neutrophil index, and inflammatory markers in diagnosing acute cholecystitis
CONCLUSION: The authors believe that the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, delta neutrophil index, ischemia-modified albumin, ischemia-modified albumin to albumin ratio, and presepsin values can be used as new markers in the diagnosis of acute cholecystitis due to their high sensitivity, specificity, and low negative likelihood ratio.PMID:38634849 | DOI:10.14744/tjtes.2024.67520 (Source: Turkish Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery : TJTES)

The risk of facial nerve palsy after benign parotidectomy. A quality project
CONCLUSION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings endorse partial superficial parotidectomy and extracapsular dissection as low-risk treatments for benign parotid tumours. However, prospective studies are warranted to elucidate recovery rates and long-term consequences of facial nerve palsy, contributing to refined surgical approaches and patient care in parotid surgery.PMID:38634637 | DOI:10.1080/00016489.2024.2336557 (Source: Acta Oto-Laryngologica)

Salivary carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation: clinicopathological analysis of 7 cases
