Multiligament Knee Reconstruction With Suture Tape Augmentation: Patient-Reported Outcomes at Minimum 2-Year Follow-up
CONCLUSION: Patients who underwent MLKR with suture augmentation had satisfactory scores across all patient-reported outcome measurements. On the basis of these criteria, the average patient achieved an acceptable clinical outcome, demonstrating that MLKR with suture augmentation is a safe and efficacious surgical technique for the treatment of MLKI. Chitin-glucan improves important pathophysiological features of irritable bowel syndrome
CONCLUSION: CG decreased visceral perception and intestinal inflammation through master gene regulation and direct binding of microbial products, suggesting that CG may constitute a new therapeutic strategy for patients with IBS or IBS-like symptoms.PMID:38690023 | PMC:PMC11056916 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i16.2258 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology)

Quality of life and support needs in children, adolescents, and young adults with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy, a mixed-method study
DISCUSSION: Quality of life in childhood FSHD is diminished caused by their physical limitations, altered appearance, fear of social rejection, and uncertainty of the disease progression in the future. A fear of social rejection most likely contributes to striving for normality regardless of physical discomfort. Support should be focused on acceptance and coping with hurtful comments. It should preferably be individualized, easily accessible and not offered as therapy but rather as tutoring for children.PMID:38692157 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejpn.2024.04.006 (Source: European Journal of Paediatric Neurology)

Age-related differences in functional connectivity associated with pain modulation
Neurobiol Aging. 2024 Apr 25;140:1-11. doi: 10.1016/j.neurobiolaging.2024.04.008. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGrowing evidence suggests that aging is associated with impaired endogenous pain modulation, and that this likely underlies the increased transition from acute to chronic pain in older individuals. Resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) offers a valuable tool to examine the neural mechanisms behind these age-related changes in pain modulation. RsFC studies generally observe decreased within-network connectivity due to aging, but its relevance for pain modulation remains unknown. We compared rsFC within a se...

Long-acting transdermal drug delivery formulations: Current developments and innovative pharmaceutical approaches
Adv Drug Deliv Rev. 2024 Apr 29:115326. doi: 10.1016/j.addr.2024.115326. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTransdermal administration remains an active research and development area as an alternative route for long-acting drug delivery. It avoids major drawbacks of conventional oral (gastrointestinal side effects, low bioavailability, and multiple dosing) or parenteral routes (invasiveness, pain, and psychological stress and bio-hazardous waste generated from needles), thereby increasing patient appeal and compliance. This review focuses on the current state of long-acting transdermal drug delivery, including adhesive patches,...

Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) for fibromyalgia patients: The role of pain cognitions as mechanisms of change
CONCLUSIONS: These results reveal the significant therapeutic potential of MBSR for FM patients, due to the emphasis on non-judging and acceptance of negative inner states. Furthermore, this research identified two important pain-related cognitions as mechanisms of change, suggesting that MBSR contributes to cognitive change, which enables the reduction of physical and psychological distress.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04304664.PMID:38692113 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctcp.2024.101860 (Source: Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice)

An acute phase reaction from zoledronate mimicking symptoms seen in opioid withdrawal: a case report
CONCLUSION: Zoledronate, well known for causing acute phase reactions, was likely the cause of withdrawal-like symptoms. Acute phase reactions with bisphosphonates mostly occur in the first infusion, and the incidence decreases with subsequent infusions. Symptoms typically occur 24-72 h post-infusion, and last at most for 72 h. Cognitive bias led the primary team to be concerned with opioid withdrawal rather than investigating other causes for the patient's presentation. Therefore, providers should thoroughly investigate potential etiologies and rule them out accordingly to provide the best care. Health care providers shou...

Characterizing the presentation, management, and clinical outcomes of patients with intradural spinal chordomas: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of intradural spinal chordomas primarily involves resection and radiotherapy. A significant challenge and complication in management is spinal tumor seeding after resection, with 9 studies proposing seeding as a mechanism of tumor metastasis in 11 cases. Factors such as tumor size, Ki-67 positivity, and distant metastasis may correlate with worse outcomes and demonstrate potential as prognostic indicators for intradural spinal chordomas. Further research is needed to improve understanding of this tumor and develop optimal treatment paradigms for these patients.PMID:38691865 | DOI:10.3171/2024.2.FOCUS...

Characterizing 1991 Gulf War women veterans from the Boston Biorepository and Integrative Network for Gulf War Illness: demographics, exposures, neuroimaging and cognitive outcomes
Conclusions: Although subtle and limited findings were present in this group of women veterans, it suggests that continued follow-up of GW women veterans is warranted. Future research should continue to evaluate differences between men and women in GW veteran samples. The BBRAIN women sub-repository is recruiting and these data are available to the research community for studies of women veterans.PMID:38692856 | DOI:10.1080/13854046.2024.2344263 (Source: The Clinical Neuropsychologist)
