Trauma exposure across the lifespan among individuals engaged in treatment with medication for opioid use disorder: differences by gender, PTSD status, and chronic pain
There is little study of lifetime trauma exposure among individuals engaged in medication treatment for opioid use disorder (MOUD). A multisite study provided the opportunity to examine the prevalence of lifet... (Source: Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy)

The effects of neck exercise in comparison to passive or no intervention on quantitative sensory testing measurements in adults with chronic neck pain: A systematic review
by Daniel Osborne, Ferozkhan Jadhakhan, Deborah Falla BackgroundPrevious systematic reviews have identified the benefits of exercise for chronic neck pain on subjective reports of pain, but not with objective measures such as quantitative sensory testing (QST). A systematic review was conducted to identify the effects of neck specific exercise on QST measures in adults with chronic neck pain to synthesise existing literature and provide clinical recommendations. MethodsThe study protocol was registered prospectively with PROSPERO (PROSPERO CRD42021297383). For both randomised and non-randomised trials, the following databa...

Comparison of the efficacy and complications of tolterodine and α-adrenergic receptor blockers in improving ureteral stent-related symptoms: A systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionThis meta-analysis suggests that tolterodine is superior to α-adrenergic receptor blockers in improving physical pain symptoms after ureteral stent placement, while α-adrenergic receptor blockers are more effective than tolterodine in enhancing work performance. Additionally, the incidence of dry mouth is higher with the use of tolterodine compared to α-a drenergic receptor blockers. However, higher-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to further investigate this issue. (Source: PLoS One)

Spontaneous Abdominal Wall Endometriosis: Minimally Invasive Surgery for Excision and Repair
A 35 year-old gravida 2 para 1 female with a pacemaker in situ due to congenital cardiac heart disease and biopsy-proven stage IV endometriosis presented with chronic pain and a “bulge” in the right lower quadrant. Per the operative report of her initial surgery, an adherent, firm nodule was palpable in the right lower anterior abdominal wall and left in situ because etiology and extent of the disease was unclear. Physical exam revealed a palpable 4cm abdominal wall mas s. Her pacemaker was MRI-incompatible, so abdominal ultrasound and CT abdomen/pelvis were obtained but revealed inconclusive findings. (Source: The Jou...

Meta-Analysis: Touch Tied to Improved Mental, Physical Health
People who received touch interventions, such as massage or gentle stroking for adults and skin-to-skin contact for infants, experienced moderate reductions in pain, depression, and anxiety, according to a meta-analysis of more than 130 studies that involved about 13  000 participants. The results suggest that “touch interventions can be systematically employed across the population to preserve and improve our health,” the researchers wrote in Nature Human Behavior. Cancer Pain Management in Patients with Opioid Use Disorder
AbstractPurpose of reviewUpdated cancer pain management recommendations considering the rise of opioid use disorder (OUD) and opioid overdose deaths. Few studies examine cancer pain management specific to patients with OUD. This narrative review aims to review recent literature on the topic, synthesize current recommendations, and formulate practical guidance.Recent findingsWe explored Google Scholar, PubMed, and institutional databases using keywords: cancer pain, pain management, and OUD for key literature. Themes found were multimodal cancer pain management, opioid selection, opioid and OUD stigma, and barriers to medic...

Effectiveness of implementing a standardized perioperative pain management protocol in children undergoing tonsillectomy: A quality improvement project
CONCLUSION: The quality improvement project highlighted notable improvements in the intervention group for whom a standardized perioperative pain management protocol was used, including reduced opioid medication administration, lower incidence of respiratory interventions, and high adherence to the pain management protocol. These findings underscore the effectiveness and feasibility of standardized protocols in enhancing patient outcomes.PMID:38695104 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14917 (Source: Paediatric Anaesthesia)

Avoiding pain during propofol injection in pediatric anesthesia: Hypnoanalgesia of the hand versus intravenous lidocaine
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that hypnoanalgesia of the hand alone is effective to prevent the pain related to propofol injection in children. No significant difference was found in comparison with lidocaine admixture nor for pain or satisfaction.PMID:38693886 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14909 (Source: Paediatric Anaesthesia)

Emerging technology has a brilliant future: the CRISPR-Cas system for senescence, inflammation, and cartilage repair in osteoarthritis
Cell Mol Biol Lett. 2024 May 2;29(1):64. doi: 10.1186/s11658-024-00581-x.ABSTRACTOsteoarthritis (OA), known as one of the most common types of aseptic inflammation of the musculoskeletal system, is characterized by chronic pain and whole-joint lesions. With cellular and molecular changes including senescence, inflammatory alterations, and subsequent cartilage defects, OA eventually leads to a series of adverse outcomes such as pain and disability. CRISPR-Cas-related technology has been proposed and explored as a gene therapy, offering potential gene-editing tools that are in the spotlight. Considering the genetic and multi...

Bilateral pyogranulomatous otitis externa with putative cartilage destruction in a dog: A severe case of auricular chondritis?
Vet Dermatol. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1111/vde.13252. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAuricular chondritis of unknown cause was suspected in a 10-year-old male Bolognese dog with a five-month history of painful bilateral nodular and ulcerative pyogranulomatous dermatitis of the pinnae with putative auricular cartilage destruction. Pain and lesions resolved with immunosuppressive doses of prednisolone, yet the condition resulted in deformity of both pinnae and external canals.PMID:38695235 | DOI:10.1111/vde.13252 (Source: Veterinary Dermatology)

Use and experienced effectiveness of non-pharmacological treatments for chronic spinal cord injury related pain in The Netherlands: A cross-sectional survey
CONCLUSION: Patients with SCI experiencing pain often use non-pharmacological treatments. Most treatments were described as moderately effective. Research on specific non-pharmacological treatments and different types of pain separately is needed to further determine the effectiveness of non-pharmacological treatments.PMID:38695723 | DOI:10.1080/10790268.2024.2345448 (Source: Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine)

Lower Limb Proprioception in Low Back Pain and Its Relationship With Voluntary Postural Control
This study aimed to investigate whether patients with low back pain (LBP) had impaired lower limb proprioception and its association with somatosensory acuity. Thirty patients with LBP and 30 asymptomatic people volunteered, using Sway Discrimination Apparatus tests to assess somatosensory acuity during voluntary anteroposterior and mediolateral postural sway. Results showed significantly reduced somatosensory acuity in mediolateral sway in LBP patients (p = 0.005) with ankle, knee, and hip proprioception showing significantly impairment compared to asymptomatic controls (all p ≤ 0.012). Regression analysis showed that a...
