Age-related differences in functional connectivity associated with pain modulation
Neurobiol Aging. 2024 Apr 25;140:1-11. doi: 10.1016/j.neurobiolaging.2024.04.008. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGrowing evidence suggests that aging is associated with impaired endogenous pain modulation, and that this likely underlies the increased transition from acute to chronic pain in older individuals. Resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) offers a valuable tool to examine the neural mechanisms behind these age-related changes in pain modulation. RsFC studies generally observe decreased within-network connectivity due to aging, but its relevance for pain modulation remains unknown. We compared rsFC within a se...

Quality of life and support needs in children, adolescents, and young adults with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy, a mixed-method study
DISCUSSION: Quality of life in childhood FSHD is diminished caused by their physical limitations, altered appearance, fear of social rejection, and uncertainty of the disease progression in the future. A fear of social rejection most likely contributes to striving for normality regardless of physical discomfort. Support should be focused on acceptance and coping with hurtful comments. It should preferably be individualized, easily accessible and not offered as therapy but rather as tutoring for children.PMID:38692157 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejpn.2024.04.006 (Source: European Journal of Paediatric Neurology)

Characterizing 1991 Gulf War women veterans from the Boston Biorepository and Integrative Network for Gulf War Illness: demographics, exposures, neuroimaging and cognitive outcomes
Conclusions: Although subtle and limited findings were present in this group of women veterans, it suggests that continued follow-up of GW women veterans is warranted. Future research should continue to evaluate differences between men and women in GW veteran samples. The BBRAIN women sub-repository is recruiting and these data are available to the research community for studies of women veterans.PMID:38692856 | DOI:10.1080/13854046.2024.2344263 (Source: The Clinical Neuropsychologist)

Neurologic Approach to Radiculopathy, Back Pain, and Neck Pain
Prim Care. 2024 Jun;51(2):345-358. doi: 10.1016/j.pop.2024.02.003. Epub 2024 Mar 11.ABSTRACTBack pain and neck pain are common in clinical practice, but significant challenges and pitfalls exist in their diagnosis, treatment, and management. From the neurologic standpoint, cervical radiculopathy and lumbosacral radiculopathy are characterized by neck pain or back pain accompanied by sensory and motor symptoms in an arm or leg. The basic neurologic examination is vital, but testing like electromyography and MRI is often needed especially in cases that fail conservative management. Oral medications, injection-based therapies...

Recognizing Myopathy in Patients with Muscle Weakness or Pain
Prim Care. 2024 Jun;51(2):311-326. doi: 10.1016/j.pop.2024.02.005. Epub 2024 Mar 19.ABSTRACTMuscle weakness and pain can be seen in orthopedic, rheumatologic, cardiac, and musculoskeletal conditions in addition to neurologic disorders. Myopathy, which describes a heterogenous group of hereditary and acquired disorders that affect muscle channels, structure, and metabolism, is one possible cause. This review focuses on essential information to support primary care providers as they assess patients with muscle weakness and pain for myopathy. As with most neurologic disorders, a thorough clinical history and physical examinat...

Long-term results of arthroscopic capsulolabral revision repair for failed anterior shoulder instability repair using suture anchors at a minimum of 10 years follow-up
CONCLUSION: Long-term follow-up after ACRR shows predictable results, with a high degree of patient satisfaction, good to excellent patient-reported outcome scores and minimal radiological degenerative changes. However, with an average recurrence rate of 19.3% after 11.86 years, the redislocation rate appears high. With careful patient selection, recurrence rates can be significantly reduced.PMID:38693287 | DOI:10.1007/s00402-024-05304-7 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) for fibromyalgia patients: The role of pain cognitions as mechanisms of change
CONCLUSIONS: These results reveal the significant therapeutic potential of MBSR for FM patients, due to the emphasis on non-judging and acceptance of negative inner states. Furthermore, this research identified two important pain-related cognitions as mechanisms of change, suggesting that MBSR contributes to cognitive change, which enables the reduction of physical and psychological distress.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04304664.PMID:38692113 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctcp.2024.101860 (Source: Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice)
