Human factors in trauma and orthopaedic surgery: a short overview
A human factors (HF) approach can help optimize individual and team performance in healthcare and across related professions that work together. Trauma and orthopaedic surgeons carry out high-stakes tasks within a cognitively and physically demanding environment. This is compounded by the challenges of working in complex healthcare systems. Error is a ‘normal’ part of being human, and must be managed in order to prevent harm to patients and staff. HF is the science of how people work within their teams, and in the workplace. Preoperative low Hounsfield units in the lumbar spine are associated with postoperative mechanical complications in adult spinal deformity
ConclusionPatients who experienced MCs following surgery for ASD had lower HUs than those who did not. HUs may therefore be more useful than BMD for predicting MCs following surgery for ASD. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Optimising Health-Related Quality of Life in Children With Osteogenesis Imperfecta
AbstractOsteogenesis Imperfecta is a rare, hereditary bone condition with an incidence of 1/15,000 –20,000. Symptoms include bone fragility, long bone deformity, scoliosis, hypermobility, alongside secondary features such as short stature, basilar invagination, pulmonary and cardiac complications, hearing loss, dentinogenesis imperfecta and malocclusion. Osteogenesis Imperfecta can have a large impact on the child and their family; this impact starts immediately after diagnosis. Fractures, pain, immobility, hospital admissions and the need for equipment and adaptations all influence the health-related quality of life of ...

The Scottish Arthroplasty Project: Scotland's approach to a National Joint Registry
This article describes the development, evolution, and future of arthroplasty registries, drawing particularly from the experience  of the Scottish Arthroplasty Project (SAP). The SAP was established in 1999 and is one of the oldest arthroplasty registries in the world. (Source: Orthopaedics and Trauma)

Study on the therapeutic effect of Kirschner wire tension band combined with anchor cross-stitch technique in the treatment of comminuted patellar inferopolar fractures
ConclusionKirschner wire tension band with anchor screw cross-stitch fixation for comminuted inferior patellar pole fractures delivered satisfactory clinical outcomes. This surgical method, characterized by its simplicity and reliability, is a valuable addition to clinical practice. (Source: PLoS One)

Characterizing the Magnitude and Risk Factors of Functional and Anatomic Limb Lengthening in Patients Undergoing Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty
In revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA), there is little information on the magnitude of potential limb lengthening, risk factors for lengthening, or its impact on patient-reported outcome measures. We aimed to quantify limb length alteration during revision TKA and assess risk factors for lengthening. (Source: The Journal of Arthroplasty)

Morbidity and Mortality Following Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty with Spinal versus General Anesthesia: A Retrospective Analysis
Despite the longstanding debate surrounding anesthesia in total joint arthroplasty, an optimal anesthetic mode has yet to be clearly identified. Patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty may be offered spinal anesthesia (SA) or general anesthesia (GA). While the arthroplasty literature has reported differences in postoperative morbidity, the hip fracture literature does not demonstrate the superiority of SA or GA. The purpose of this study was to further investigate this relationship and determine if there is a significant difference in morbidity and mortality between patients undergoing SA compared with those undergoin...

Surgical Stabilization of Rib Fractures in the Geriatric Trauma Population Is Associated with Equivalent Outcomes to a Younger Cohort: A Propensity Matched Analysis
Traumatic rib fractures are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality[1]. Surgical rib fixation has been found to reduce duration of ventilation, hospital length of stay, need for tracheostomy, and mortality in patients with flail chest[2,3]. Significant benefits have also been found in patients with severely displaced rib fractures without flail chest, including reduced pain, improved disability-related quality of life, and reduced narcotic use[4]. As such, the Chest Wall Injury Society (CWIS) has established guidelines recommending surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) be offered to patients with chest wall...

Cemented vs cementless stems for revision arthroplasties due to Vancouver B2 periprosthetic hip fracture
ConclusionCemented fixation in stem revision due to Vancouver B2 periprosthetic hip fracture could be an optimal option with faster recovery which could decrease the rate of complications and reintervention, without compromising the fracture healing and patient mortality. Thus, this option can be considered when an anatomical reduction can be obtained, especially in elderly patients with multiple comorbidities in which a less aggressive surgical option should be considered. Distinct patterns of fracture propagation in distal radial fractures and the relationship to the ulnar head
There are two distinct coronal patterns: radial to ulnar ending c. 2  mm proximal to the distal radio-ulnar joint; ulnar to radial starting at the proximal distal radio-ulnar joint. There may be third pattern - transverse fractures; these may be variants of the above. Sagittally the main direction is volar to dorsal but 11% are obverse. This is the first description of distinct fracture patterns in extra-articular distal radius fractures. In addition the fracture patterns appear to correlate with different directions of force transmission which fit with our understanding of falling and the relatively uncontrolled impact o...

Establishment of a Rabbit Model of Adjacent Intervertebral Disk Degeneration After Lumbar Fusion and Fixation and Evaluation of Autophagy Factor Expression in Nucleus Pulposus Cells
CONCLUSION: After posterolateral lumbar fusion in rabbits, the animal ASD model showed gradual deterioration of adjacent intervertebral disks with prolonged follow-up. The findings indicate the important role of autophagy in the apoptosis of nucleus pulposus cells in adjacent intervertebral disks. Geographic Access to Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeons in the United States: An Analysis of Sociodemographic Factors
CONCLUSION: Pediatric orthopedic surgeons are not equally distributed in the United States, and many counties are not optimally served. Additional studies are needed to identify the relationship between travel distances and patient outcomes and how geographic inequalities can be minimized.
