Do plasma-rich protein injections have a role in orthopaedics? A systematic review and meta-analysis of the randomized control trials
We evaluated the effectiveness of plasma-rich protein injections (PRP) in terms of pain, patient-reported outcomes and function in degenerative joint disease and tendinopathy. The search strategies were ran in Ovid Medline and Ovid Embase in October 2023 by a clinical librarian. Results were limited to the last 10 years. The search terms used were ‘platelet rich plasma’ and ‘orthopaedics’. After screening and the eligibility process this resulted in 18 randomized control trials (RCTs). We analysed 18 level 1 RCTs in regard to gluteal tendinopathy, hip osteoarthritis, patella tendinopathy, knee osteoarthritis, Achi...

Sustainable orthopaedics: the needs and challenges
This article explores the needs and challenges  to achieve sustainable orthopaedic surgery. Orthopaedic surgery continues to create a large carbon footprint, primarily through the use of single-use consumables and energy-intensive operating theatres. While efforts to reduce environmental harm have primarily targeted changes within the operati ng theatre, a comprehensive approach must consider the entire surgical pathway. Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 726: Exploring Viral Genome Profile in Mpox Patients during the 2022 Outbreak, in a North-Eastern Centre of Italy
bi Concetta Castilletti In 2022, an unprecedented outbreak of mpox raged in several nations. Sequences from the 2022 outbreak reveal a higher nucleotide substitution if compared with the estimated rate for orthopoxviruses. Recently, intra-lesion SNVs (single nucleotide variants) have been described, and these have been suggested as possible sources of genetic variation. Until now, it has not been clear if the presence of several SNVs could represents the result of local mutagenesis or a possible co-infection. We investigated the significance of SNVs through whole-genome sequencing analysis of four unrelated mpox case...

Echoes from the past: How America's major moments shaped mental health policies through a young adult lens
Am J Orthopsychiatry. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1037/ort0000751. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis commentary examines key mental health policies across four transformative historical periods in America: the aftermath of World War II (1939-1946), the Civil Rights Movement (1954-1968), the Great Recession (2007-2009), and the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2023). The post-WWII era established today's foundational mental health system, emphasizing military personnel, as reflected in the National Mental Health Act of 1946. During the Civil Rights Movement, the focus shifted toward community equality, leading to the Community Mental Healt...

A history of the community mental health movement and individuals with serious mental illness: A vision for the future
This article reviews some of that interesting history and the importance of understanding those fundamental roots as we also look at the future for what is next in advocacy, social justice action, and policy directions for advancing the lives of those with serious mental illness, who face some of the most oppressive forms of marginalization and rejection of human rights and citizenship. This article will outline social justice action agendas for the organization and diverse collaborative fields to pursue as we embark upon the future and envision the full rights of citizenship for those with serious mental illness. Ethnocultural disparities in loneliness among women in Israel: A population-based study
We examined whether ethnocultural disparities in loneliness persist when controlling for social determinants in these four domains or whether ethnic disparities are related to other forms of inequality among the three study groups, as reflected in these four domains. Next, we explored associations between the co-occurrence of key social determinants with loneliness. We used cross-sectional representative data of working-age women from the Israeli Social Survey (N = 5,600). Hierarchical logistic regression analyses indicated a higher risk for loneliness among FSU immigrants and Israeli Arabs than among native Jews. Economic...

Use and experienced effectiveness of non-pharmacological treatments for chronic spinal cord injury related pain in The Netherlands: A cross-sectional survey
CONCLUSION: Patients with SCI experiencing pain often use non-pharmacological treatments. Most treatments were described as moderately effective. Research on specific non-pharmacological treatments and different types of pain separately is needed to further determine the effectiveness of non-pharmacological treatments.PMID:38695723 | DOI:10.1080/10790268.2024.2345448 (Source: Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine)

Postural effects on blood pressure, intraocular pressure, and ocular perfusion pressure in patients with spinal cord injury
CONCLUSION: Postural changes differently affect BP, IOP, and OPP in SCI compared to normal individuals, with variations based on the level of SCI. While not directly assessing glaucoma, the study offers insights into ocular hemodynamics in SCI compared to normals.PMID:38695735 | DOI:10.1080/10790268.2024.2345446 (Source: Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine)

The Learning Curve From Converting From Fluoroscopic to Robotic-Assisted Direct Anterior Total Hip Arthroplasty
CONCLUSION: The DAA THA can be performed with RA-THA and achieve comparable acetabular placement without fluoroscopy. Surgical time was higher for the RA-THA group during the learning curve, but then decreased and was consistent with the manual fluoroscopic group after 15 cases.PMID:38697134 (Source: Surgical Technology International)
