Echoes from the past: How America's major moments shaped mental health policies through a young adult lens
Am J Orthopsychiatry. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1037/ort0000751. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis commentary examines key mental health policies across four transformative historical periods in America: the aftermath of World War II (1939-1946), the Civil Rights Movement (1954-1968), the Great Recession (2007-2009), and the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2023). The post-WWII era established today's foundational mental health system, emphasizing military personnel, as reflected in the National Mental Health Act of 1946. During the Civil Rights Movement, the focus shifted toward community equality, leading to the Community Mental Healt...

The Learning Curve From Converting From Fluoroscopic to Robotic-Assisted Direct Anterior Total Hip Arthroplasty
CONCLUSION: The DAA THA can be performed with RA-THA and achieve comparable acetabular placement without fluoroscopy. Surgical time was higher for the RA-THA group during the learning curve, but then decreased and was consistent with the manual fluoroscopic group after 15 cases.PMID:38697134 (Source: Surgical Technology International)

Use and experienced effectiveness of non-pharmacological treatments for chronic spinal cord injury related pain in The Netherlands: A cross-sectional survey
CONCLUSION: Patients with SCI experiencing pain often use non-pharmacological treatments. Most treatments were described as moderately effective. Research on specific non-pharmacological treatments and different types of pain separately is needed to further determine the effectiveness of non-pharmacological treatments.PMID:38695723 | DOI:10.1080/10790268.2024.2345448 (Source: Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine)

Postural effects on blood pressure, intraocular pressure, and ocular perfusion pressure in patients with spinal cord injury
CONCLUSION: Postural changes differently affect BP, IOP, and OPP in SCI compared to normal individuals, with variations based on the level of SCI. While not directly assessing glaucoma, the study offers insights into ocular hemodynamics in SCI compared to normals.PMID:38695735 | DOI:10.1080/10790268.2024.2345446 (Source: Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine)

Cervical Disk Replacement Versus Anterior Cervical Diskectomy and Fusion: Effect of Procedural Variant on Patients With a Prolonged Preoperative Duration of Symptoms From Disk Herniation
CONCLUSION: Patients with prolonged PSD due to cervical DH demonstrated notable improvements in physical function, disability, pain, and mental health regardless of fusion versus arthroplasty techniques. Accounting for demographic variations, patients undergoing CDA demonstrated a greater magnitude of improvement and superior scores in physical function at the first postoperative follow-up. Rates of clinically tangible improvements in PROMs did not markedly vary by surgical procedure. Patients undergoing CDA may perceive greater early improvements to physical function compared with patients undergoing ACDF for prolonged PS...

Prolonged Opioid Use Is Associated With Poor Pain Alleviation After Orthopaedic Surgery
CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrated an overall high rate of COU. The known risk factors of COU were evident in our study population, particularly the modifiable risk factor of acute postsurgical PPA. Better management of postsurgical pain in orthopaedic patients may lead to a decrease in the rates of COU in this group.PMID:38696825 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-24-00044 (Source: The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)

Decompressive craniectomy surgery in a dog with intracranial extradural hematoma following blunt force trauma
This report describes the diagnosis and surgical management of an intracranial extradural hematoma in a dog with increased intracranial pressure refractory to medical management. Furthermore, this report describes the diagnostic imaging findings used to diagnose this particular form of primary brain injury.PMID:38694740 | PMC:PMC11017925 (Source: The Canadian Veterinary Journal)

Changes in thyroid hormone concentrations over time in dogs with autoimmune thyroiditis
The objective of this study was to follow long-term changes in the concentration of thyroid hormones in dogs with subclinical thyroiditis.SAMPLES: Samples were obtained from 125 dogs with subclinical thyroiditis. The study population included 70 female and 55 male dogs. The mean testing interval was 3.9 years from initial testing (SD, 2.3 years; range, 1 to 9 years).METHODS: Dogs with subclinical thyroiditis were identified retrospectively using results from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals Canine Thyroid Profile performed by the Endocrinology Section of the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. Owners ...

Water-soluble biopolymers calcium polymalate derived from fermentation broth of Aureobasidium pullulans markedly alleviates osteoporosis and fatigue
In this study, we isolated a natural soluble biopolymer, calcium polymalate (PMACa), from the fermentation broth of the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans, to investigate its potential as an anti-osteoporosis therapeutic agent. Characterization revealed that linear PMA-Ca chains juxtaposed to form a porous, rod-like state, in the presence of Ca2+. In vivo mouse models demonstrated that PMA-Ca significantly promoted the conversion of serum calcium into bone calcium, and stimulated bone growth and osteogenesis. Additionally, PMA-Ca alleviated exercise fatigue in mice by facilitating the removal of essential metabolites, such as ...

Spinopelvic interactions in total hip arthroplasty: 295 patients followed for a minimum follow-up of 10  years
CONCLUSIONS: Concurrent spinal pathology influences THA outcomes at a minimum follow-up of 10 years. Sex, age, and associated lumbar degeneration can affect clinical and radiological changes over time. A decrease in SFP angle values over time was found in patients sustaining late dislocation.PMID:38695378 | DOI:10.1177/11207000241248074 (Source: Hip International)

Ethnocultural disparities in loneliness among women in Israel: A population-based study
We examined whether ethnocultural disparities in loneliness persist when controlling for social determinants in these four domains or whether ethnic disparities are related to other forms of inequality among the three study groups, as reflected in these four domains. Next, we explored associations between the co-occurrence of key social determinants with loneliness. We used cross-sectional representative data of working-age women from the Israeli Social Survey (N = 5,600). Hierarchical logistic regression analyses indicated a higher risk for loneliness among FSU immigrants and Israeli Arabs than among native Jews. Economic...
