Bracing for vertebral compression fracture
Our clinic is currently working on creating a guideline for compression fracture management. Currently there is a plan to make bracing part of that management plan. Our neurosurgeons routinely requests this as well. Up-to-date says that bracing really does not do anything, citing a number of small studies without efficacy, and that they do not routinely use it. Are people here on the board still bracing for their compression fractures patients? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Michigan vs Stony Brook
Hey everyone! I wanted to ask for some advice. Michigan is giving me 35k in scholarship aid and Stony brook will be charging me in-state tuition. I have an interest in orthopedics and I hope to someday end up in residency in NYC with family and friends being mostly here. Where do you guys think would be a better choice? Michigan (35k in scholarship aid) Pros -- research opportunities are great -- good match list -- got a good student body vibe Cons -- farther from home, friends, SO... USUHS vs HPSP specialty options
Question for the group. When it comes to non primary care, selective medical specialities such as Ortho, ENT, optho, etc, is it easier to match into the specialty of your choice if you demonstrate your full throated embrace of military medicine by attending USUHS vs a more reluctant approach to the military if you do HPSP? It seems I notice more people getting competive residencies such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, etc if they went USUHS vs HPSP, but I don't know for certain and so I... KOL vs DOL: Implications for Pain...
This article discusses the changing role of KOLs to DOLs and defines what roles each group has in influencing behavior among healthcare providers. journaloei.scholasticahq.com DOLs have emerged as a new breed of influencers in healthcare, leveraging digital platforms to quickly and widely share information while being more relatable and measurable than traditional KOLs. FIU HWCOM vs Wright State Boonshoft
I have been accepted into both Wright State and FIU and am struggling to pick between them. I’ll list some pros and cons and info that I’ve gathered from speaking with a lot of students and residents. I am out of state at both. I am open to any info / guidance people may have. The biggest thing I struggle with is the battle of home residency differences that may not even end up applying to me. I am interested in beginning med school with a focus in Ophthalmology or Orthopedic Surgery... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Lumbar Sympathetic Block
I've had an orthopedic surgeon in my community suggest LSB frequently for "possible CRPS". Some of these are highly questionable but on occasion CRPS seems remotely possible. Who still does these? I did a couple in training but not since then. If I did proceed, should I have any special monitoring or meds handy? Would you recommend an SCS trial instead if CRPS is possible, and they've failed a couple traditional meds? How would you politely tell the surgeon you don't think it's CRPS, or... Toradol Intra-articular injections
Toradol intra-articular injections seem to be getting more popular in my neck of the woods with the orthopedic surgeons. Seems good to avoid steroids when possible would be the upside I think. Also, on literature review, surprisingly favorable, compared to steroid injections with no noticeable adverse effects I could find. Anyone doing this? Thoughts? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Would you continue working if you won the lottery?
Was talking to an orthopod recently, he had been involved in the development of a medical device and receives a massive check every year from royalties for it. He no longer needs to work to live comfortably. But he continues to work a ton, see patients, and operate all day, because he absolutely loves his job and loves helping his patients. Was curious if onc folks on here feel the same way about their work? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
