News from AAOS
Orthopedic Surgeons on Track to Earn Less Than Taco Bell Workers If current trends continue, patients are in big trouble www.medpagetoday.com "If those numbers aren't disappointing enough for young surgeons who've already spent a dozen years in training, the same group fit a third-order polynomial model to historical data for Medicare reimbursements for arthroplasties, yielding a projection out to 2030. Actual figures from 2007 to 2023 showed mean reimbursements falling over time, and falling faster with each passing year from 2019 onward. T...

Ortho vs Radiology
Hi all I am currently a medical student torn between applying into orthopedics and radiology. I came into medical school wanting to pursue orthopedics and worked hard to get a lot of research experience and good grades. Throughout medical school I continually heard if you like anything equally as much you should do that instead. The only other field I have enjoyed is radiology. I enjoy the fact you get to see the entire spectrum of pathologies and that you become an expert in a specific... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

UVA vs GW
I know the cycle isn't over yet but I thought I would make a post with some of my thoughts so far. If it changes, y'all will see me again. Right now, I'm 80% leaning towards UVA here with GW in the running and VCU kind of in the running but need some insights from y'all. To let you know of my personal interests, I'm very passionate about refugee healthcare and research. Also not completely sure what specialty I want to pursue, but I'm really interested in surgery, specifically Orthopaedics... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Possible Re-applicant with 0 II's Seeking Advice
Hi everybody, I applied to 35 schools this cycle and am waiting to hear back from around 30 of them. This cycle unfortunately did not go as I hoped and I was hoping to get some feedback for next cycle. I submitted everything by mid to late August except for a couple of schools whose secondaries I received later (I submitted a number of schools by mid-late July). 23 yo CA ORM 514, 3.75 cGPA, 3.65 sGPA Clinical ~1000 hrs broken down into the following: - 650 hours (paid role + leadership)... UTSW vs. McGovern vs. Dell vs. UTMB
I would first like to preface this by saying how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to interview at these places and to pre-match to UTMB. This cycle honestly feels kind of feels like a dream! I am hoping to pursue orthopedic surgery as a specialty I am also going to be on HPSP and participating in the military match process so that adds a unique layer of complexity to the situation. if anyone has any more pros/cons or comments to add about any of the schools that you think I should... Georgetown vs Rush vs UCR
Hello everyone, after sifting through countless forums I come to you with my own dilemma. I have been blessed to receive three acceptances so far, and ask for your hopefully unbiased opinions on choosing one of these schools. I am a CA resident and hope to match back into CA in either general surgery, orthopedic surgery, or EM. I will most likely be funding my tuition fully through federal loans. While UCR is close to family and in-state tuition, I have decided to look past these benefits... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Total knee replacement under PNB
We are asked to follow joint commission standards for total joint replacements. It says PNB can also be used as primary anesthetic for TKR. I've never done one under just PNB. For you guys who do these under just PNB, what combination of blocks do you do? Anything to watch out for? Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

The things I learned from other doctors while in residency
Besides medical knowledge, there were many life lessons I learned while I interacted with medical professionals on my off service months. From a radiologist: Where you go for residency ultimately does not matter. An average residency will teach you 95% of the field. The top ones will open up that last 5% for you. The bar for medicine is so high already that the lowest graduating doctor is still minimally competent. From an orthopedic surgeon: Never take call for free. The stress on your... Orthopedics vs Family medicine with MSK focus
Trying to decide on specialties to apply for and have really narrowed it down to FM and ortho largely due to the patient population (sports medicine type of practice hopefully working with an increasingly active aging population), a strong interest in musculoskeletal cases, and working with my hands to get fast/robust improvements to peoples health. I know primary care and ortho sports med have a lot of differences, but I'd be shaping a primary care sports med clinic to be as close to ortho... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
