Would love some input
Hey guys! Been following the podiatry forums for quite some time now, and I was hesitant on this field because you are looking at feet all day and I figured how satisfying can that be? Then recently I broke my ankle, and had to undergo surgery, this woke me up HUGE! I realized what a big role our feet do for us in our everyday lives, and how important they are. I hated my orthopedic surgeon (he made a lot of mistakes), then I met this podiatrist and this guy was awesome! He said he loves... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Orthopedic surgery vs. Neurosurgery
I'm struggling with my decision between ortho and neurosurgery and was wondering if anyone else who was going through the same decision could chime in on what their thought process was in making a decision. I'm still kinda early on in medical and have shadowed both specialties a bit but I think I might need to kinda start deciding soon because of how competitive these specialties are. I think a lot of people who are interested in the surgical subs have these two on their minds a lot. For me... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Squeamishness
I did okay during surgery shadowing (GS and CTS) and most "yucky" (the word I use - I work with children ) things like bodily fluids don't bother me too much. My hangup for some reason is bones, especially dislocations. My friend's 3-year-old got a nursemaid's elbow and I just needed to look away from the Facebook photos of that thing or else I would puke. This was true of me too - just couldn't look at that thing - when I have dislocated things, but fractures have been okay. Bones... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

ATSU SOMA v CUSOM v ATSU Kirksville
Background info: I have HPSP scholarship so the cost of school and the cost of living is not a factor. Entering med school I am leaning towards residency in orthopedics. My strengths are clinical; my weakness is pure sciences. ATSU SOMA: Pros: -Early clinical cycle, would like to work in a CHC 1 day a week as a break from academics -location of the school and my top 3 CHC choices. -small group learning 2nd year at CHC Cons: -No established ultrasound program -Minimal international... Choosing Surgical Specialty with Orthopedic Issues..
I am very interested in surgery, but have several medical issues, such as De Quervian and Carpal Tunnel, and have had arthroscopic elbow and knee surgery and back surgery. I am able to stand fine and my surgeons have told me it should be okay but I am worried about longevity with these wrist conditions and possibly back condition (surgery went fine) . Standing if anything is better than sitting often for me. However, in a field that uses hands so much, i am worried that with de quervian... Choosing Surgical Specialty with Orthopedic Issues.. Orthopedic implants and using the substerile door
"Don't go through the external OR door", "Limit OR traffic". As far as I'm aware, no real evidence for this preventing infection vs substerile door. Seems theoretical with disruption of positive pressure and particulate contamination, Tried to do a search on this topic but haven't found much. I don't think it actually translates to higher infection rates. Thoughts? Anyone with references that say otherwise? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Fee waiver question
HI guys, Was just wondering if I should wait for my fee waiver acceptance (hopefully, applied four days ago), or power through the application process ASAP and spend the money. I would rather spend the money, since I am strapped at the moment, but I do not want to hurt my chances at osteopathic admission. For reference, I believe I am a good applicant for DO schools (3.6 GPA, 516 MCAT, DO shadowing, DO letter, current medical assistant/scribe for DO orthopedic surgeon which involved... Canadian medical student interested in matching to US Ortho programs.
Hey, I am a Canadian who is interested in matching to US orthopaedic surgery programs. 1- Are there certain programs that are Canadian friendly? (if so which ones) 2- In Canada, we cant take more than 8 weeks of any specialty electives (meaning no more than 8 weeks of ortho), as such it may be difficult to get electives in many of the schools that you are interested in. If you don't take electives at a school, how likely is it, that you match? 3- Any other suggestions and insights... Canadian medical student interested in matching to US Ortho programs.
