Information on different pediatric surgical specialties
I am a current second year medical student interested in surgery, and also the pediatric patient population. I have heard it is extremely competitive to match into a pediatric surgical fellowship from general surgery, but is the same true for pediatric orthopedics/ENT/urology etc? (Assuming you match into their respective residencies, I understand these are also competitive.) Are there certain pediatric surgical fields which are only available in an academic setting? Can they all sustain a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Not accommodating patients with opioid use disorder is a violation of the ADA act
Just stumbled across this jewel. Apparently, if we don’t treat patients because they have OUD, it is considered discrimination. Orthopedic surgeons settle allegations of turning away opioid use disorder patients seeking joint replacements The U.S. The Attorney's Office reached a settlement with Springfield, Mass.-based New England Orthopedic Surgeons amid allegations the practice turned away patients with opioid use disorder for total joint replacements. www.beckersspine.com (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Non trad seeking guidance
Hi everyone - nice to be here! I’ll be straight up and say I’m a non-trad. I’m a 27 y/o male in CA. I completed physical therapy school in 2020, worked for a year, then applied to a big name hospital system for a specialization route in orthopedic PT this year. I am single, no kids, no student loan debt. I enjoy what I do. But long story short, I started to feel limited in my scope once I started my current position. I feel I can make a bigger difference in my patient’s lives by... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Advice for a better lifestyle as a surgeon?
I shadowed an orthopedic surgeon over the summer in an outpatient setting owned by one of those large healthcare conglomerates. It was a phenomenal experience. And it really laid to rest my previously held belief that the job makes surgeons disillusioned, grumpy, and humorless (based on other doctors I had met). He was such a great guy, and an even better doctor. I could see myself doing what he does and being good at it. And then one day one of the staff walks in to pile 3 more cases onto... DO matching Orthopedics
Before starting medical school I really wanted to go into orthopedic surgery (b/c of some previous history. I am currently a first year at a DO school and have of course shadowed other specialties and thought those were interesting but my mind has always gone back to ortho. I am completely open to other specialties for when third and fourth year start but I figure if even a part of me wants to go into a competitive specialty, I might as well start preparing just in case I stick with ortho... Prostate case: What is appropriate for reirradiation and how?
78 y/o with osteoporosis and good PS now 6 years out from EBRT alone for favorable intermediate risk prostate cancer. (T1c, PSA ~6, Gleason 3+4=7). Now with biochemical progression (most recent PSA 5.6 with PSA doubling time ~10.7 months). Restaging imaging, including axumin, demonstrates isolated activity at prostate base with involvement of SV. What to do? 1. Observe (risk to life still low and DMFS probably pretty high at 7 years based on PSA doubling time) 2. ADT (pt with osteoporosis)... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Lawsuit Alleges Practicing Physicians Block New Residency Program
OrthoSC torpedoed residency program to maintain Myrtle Beach monopoly, lawsuit alleges BY DAVID WEISSMAN UPDATED NOVEMBER 22, 2021 12:16 PM A potentially prosperous orthopedic surgery residency program was shut down due to threats by a group of Myrtle Beach-area doctors who “did not want to be training their competition,” according to the former director of that program. Dual applying
The application cycle this season seems like its going to be a blood bath. The match rate will probably be less than 50% (1700 applicants and just 700ish spots). For those that have dual applied in the past.. How did you go about it? What did you tell/plan to tell the letter writers of your backup specialty post match-day in the event that you matched ortho? Help! Getting Fellowship Approved for Post-9/11 GIB Benefits
Another frustrated active duty physician here plotting my escape... I'm separating next summer and will be headed to a non-ACGME accredited fellowship in AUG 2022. I'm trying to use my GIB benefits during fellowship primarily for Military Housing Allowance (MHA); however, while recently trying to get my fellowship "approved", the state certifying official declined the request because he said the fellowship isn't specifically accredited by the ACGME, rather it's accredited by the Orthopaedic... Male Orthopaedic Surgery residency applicants engaged in sexist, racist, misogynistic comments regarding fellow female applicants
This came to my attention recently when a female MS3 was talking about her upcoming electives and plans for applying to ortho. It’s absolutely reprehensible. I am saddened, but unfortunately, not shocked, by this type of behavior. We all have to do better. -RJM https://mobile.twitter.com/hashtag/speakuportho?src=hashtag_click (Source: Student Doctor Network)

regenerative medicine key papers
I"m getting some pushback from my orthopedic partners regarding PRP and I need to summarize the current data for them. There are so many papers out on PRP. I would appreciate your help if you could guide me to the seminal papers, or rather key papers with the best statistical evidence for PRP with key peripheral joint/tendon issues. (For knee OA, lateral epicondylitis, rotator cuff, etc). Key papers using PRP for other pathology, are also appreciated Thank you (Source: Student Doctor Network)

MD/MS vs MD/MBA
Current M2 at a med school with a top 5 business school. Interested in orthopedics. Would like to be involved in device development one day and keep the door open to working with industry. I'm thinking about doing a dual degree for a few reasons. I didn't take a gap year after undergrad, so I'm already quite young, and the extra year would just be another way to "catch up" with the age of everyone else. Although I have been heavily involved in research throughout undergrad and the past 1.5... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
