Step 2 Timing
I was thinking of waiting to take step 2 until late september/early October so that I submit with just my step 1 score. I was wondering if this is still a feasible option for people who did well on step 1 and have a good application otherwise? thanks (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Hopkins vs UCLA
*Please don't quote* Just got off the waitlist at UCLA, and I was offered a scholarship that I only have 24 hours to accept/decline. I am married, grew up on the West Coast, and we had our hearts set on moving back East until UCLA accepted/offered a scholarship. I am 90% sure I want to go into orthopaedics, but I have loved shadowing/doing research in other fields, so there's always a possibility that I pursue something else. Johns Hopkins ($160,000 total cost) Pros Fantastic... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

UCSF vs. Columbia
Hi! I'm stuck between two schools and I would love some input. I am interested in doing orthopedic surgery as my specialty. Please do not quote for personal details!! Columbia: Pros: -Living in NYC would be fun -Columbia has the most robust clubs and extracurriculars, which I think would be very fun and allow me to keep my interests outside of medicine -Scholarly project research in the curriculum (protected research time) Cons: -I'm worried clinical year will be pretty stressful... 48 hours to accept scholarship. What would you do?
I got offered a 75% tuition scholarship by a school today but was told I only have 48 hrs to accept and if I do accept then it is binding and I would be CTE'd there. I feel like that's against traffic laws trying to make me verbally commit before 4/30, right? I'm currently on 3 WLs that I like better than this school but 1) there is no guarantee I get off those WL and 2) even if I do they probably won't offer me this much aid. Should I just take the money and go to this school even though... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Anyone using calcitonin?
50is yo female with pmhx for polytrauma with pelvic ring fracture years prior. Fixated and now healed. She has a tender spot lateral to her pubic ramus which CT confirms is right around where one of her fractures was. I have tried neuro pain agents and local injection. Anyone use calcitonin? I always read that it can be used for bone pain but have never met anyone who uses it. Any tips or doing you have found effective? Anything to watch for? Thanks (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Thoughts on General Surgery as a DO and AMA.
I am a long-time lurker of SDN and recently matched DO into General Surgery. I’ve wanted to make an account and do this thread for a while and to do it in the same vein as this thread on orthopedics and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

ARCOM vs. VCOM Virginia
Hi all, I want to preface this discussion by saying that I am very interested in pursuing orthopedic surgery, so my greatest priority is picking the school that will put me in the best position for a successful match. The biggest thing that I am thinking about is the established school vs. the newer school. When thinking about matching into a very competitive speciality like ortho, is it decisively advantageous to be at a more established school? Is that worth an extra $15,000... Physical therapy approaches to lower extremity.
Hello everyone. I am student jn a PT program about to go out to my first clinical. Will have all of ortho done by the time the first clinical starts. I received a email from the academy of Orthopaedic physcial therapy for some self study courses and one was for the lower extremity ortho movement system examinations. I was wondering is this material too advanced for a student? Or will it work as a good tool for refreshing and advancing my knowledge of the lower extremity. Thank you! Weird ortho case
One of the total joint guys I work closely with asked my opinion on a weird case he has. He specifically wanted to know if I could use botox. The case is a woman with multiple back surgeries and bilateral hip replacements with chronic dislocations. He has revised left hip and she did well. Now months later he revised the right hip (a few days ago) and she has since developed significant gastroc spasm and pain in RLE . She is now admitted in hospital The case was not a complicated revision... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

oligomet lung case
59 yo male already on 2L NC due to copd/emphysema. T2N0M1 (solitary femur neck bone met) non small cell carcinoma, PDL1 40% +, diagnosed 3/2020. Bone met was in femur neck with path fracture - had a lot of tumor removed, ortho fixation, then post op 30 Gy in 10 fractions back at diagnosis. He's now 1 year out on nivo/ipi and his only site of disease is his primary lung tumor - it went from 4 cm to 2 cm but still there. His KPS is good at around 80. I'm thinking (and med onc agrees) it's... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Residents and attendings , your perspective on whether ortho is right for me, a small short man ?
i know its not possible to give life advice to someone we do not know but being more experienced , your opinion can help me . I am a small guy 5 , 7 with little muscles narrow bones. I am in a country where ortho is not super competitive , but moderately. I have finished my med school. . Should i go into ortho? I was always fascinated by it during med school. But i fear i may not be suitable for physically demanding task, and it may take a toll on me as i age. Your view ? P.s ( TraumaMD... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Does ortho require brute force/ power ? How hard or stressful is it physically?
I am a short guy . I imagine ortho procedures require lots of pushing pulling applying force. It kinda scares me . Even though i have interested in ortho and the way it restores funtions. I also like the fixing / mechanical repair aspect. But i dont want to end up doing something that i am unable to. Your suggestions? I havent seen many procedures but a fractured tibia where orthopod was pushing in a nail/ rod (excuse any misnomer). P.S .( I am not in US) (Source: Student Doctor Network)

OMFS Work-Life Balance
Hey all! I’ll get right to the point: How does the work-life balance of OMFS compare to other dental and medical/surgical specialties? I would assume that OMFS (generally) work longer (and more stressful!) hours than, say, a general dentist, orthodontist, etc etc. But how would OMFS compare to, say, dermatology, optho, ENT, or, on the other end of the spectrum, neurosurgery, orthopedics, gen surg? Would you say that OMFS has one of the best work-life balance of “surgical” specialities? Is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Anyone heard of Rom Tech
Received a call from a medical orthopedic startup called Rom Tech offering 100 shares in the company to listen to their business pitch and then offer an option to invest into their company. They say they are ready to go ipo and have several ortho surgeons around the country signed up for their rehab product. Anybody have any experience with this? Sounds kind of like a timeshare pitch but wanted to see if anyone had heard of this. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
