Trends in infectious spondylitis from 2000 to 2020
ConclusionRecently, infections caused by indigenous bacteria in the oral cavity and intestines have increased more than those caused by resistant bacteria over the past two decade. (Source: European Spine Journal)

Identifying Gut Microbiome Features that Predict Responsiveness Toward a Prebiotic Capable of Increasing Calcium Absorption: A Pilot Study
AbstractPreviously, we demonstrated that prebiotics may provide a complementary strategy for increasing calcium (Ca) absorption in adolescents which may improve long-term bone health. However, not all children responded to prebiotic intervention. We determine if certain baseline characteristics of gut microbiome composition predict prebiotic responsiveness. In this secondary analysis, we compared differences in relative microbiota taxa abundance between responders (greater than or equal to 3% increase in Ca absorption) and non-responders (less than 3% increase). Dual stable isotope methodologies were used to assess fractio...

Paget Disease of Bone Harboring Bone Metastatic Neuroendocrine Cancer: A Case Report
In conclusion, low back pain in the elderly may require deep investigation to individuate rare diseases. In asymptomatic patients with apparently stable PDB, the sudden appearance of pain or neurologic symptoms may alert the clinician for the possibility of other superimposing diseases, like bone metastases. Postoperative Bisphosphonates Use is Associated with Reduced Adverse Outcomes After Primary Total Joint Arthroplasty of Hip and Knee: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study
This study investigated the association between the use of bisphosphonates and the risk of adverse outcomes after primary TJA. This matched cohort study utilized the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan to identify patients who underwent primary TJA over a 15-year period (January 2000 –December 2015 inclusive). Study participants were further categorized into two groups, bisphosphonate users and nonusers, using propensity score matching. The Kaplan–Meier curve analysis and adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) of revision surgery, adverse outcomes of primary surgery and subsequent TJ A were calculated using Co...

Roles of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 in Heterotopic Ossification Induced by Achilles Tenotomy in Thermal Injured Mice
In conclusion, the present study showed that PAI-1 deficiency promoted HO in Achilles tendons after trauma/burn treatment partly by enhancing osteoblast differentiation and ALP activity in mice. Endogenous PAI-1 may play protective roles against HO after injury and inflammation. (Source: Calcified Tissue International)

Pre-proenkephalin 1 is Downregulated Under Unloading and is Involved in Osteoblast Biology
AbstractPre-proenkephalin 1 (Penk1) is a pro-neuropeptide that belongs to the typical opioid peptide ’s family, having analgesic properties. We previously foundPenk1 to be the most downregulated gene in a whole gene profiling analysis performed in osteoblasts subjected to microgravity as a model of mechanical unloading. In this work,Penk1 downregulation was confirmed in the bones of two in vivo models of mechanical unloading: tail-suspended and botulinum toxin A (botox)-injected mice. Consistently, in the sera from healthy volunteers subjected to bed rest, we observed an inverse correlation between PENK1 and bed rest dur...

My anesthesia Choice-HF: development and preliminary testing of a tool to facilitate conversations about anesthesia for hip fracture surgery
Patients often desire involvement in anesthesia decisions, yet clinicians rarely explain anesthesia options or elicit preferences. We developed My Anesthesia Choice-Hip Fracture, a conversation aid about anest... (Source: BMC Anesthesiology)

Fracture Risk and Health Profiles Differ According to Relationship Status: Findings from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study
AbstractRegistry studies have suggested associations between relationship status and fracture risk. We considered associations between relationship status and incident fracture in the Hertfordshire Cohort Study, comprising community-dwelling older adults, and explored associations between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors with relationship status. 2997 participants completed a baseline questionnaire (1998 –2004) and clinic visit. Participants were followed up until December 2018 using Hospital Episode Statistics, which report clinical outcomes using codes from the 10th revision of the International Classification of Di...

Primary arthrodesis for diabetic ankle fractures using a modified retrograde femoral intramedullary locking nail combined with lateral plating, surgical technique, and early results of a pilot study
ConclusionUsing a modified femoral IMN combined with lateral plating is a promising technique to achieve ankle arthrodesis in diabetic patients with acute ankle fractures with acceptable outcomes; however, further studies with larger numbers are needed.Level of evidence: IV (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Shots fired: evaluation of vascular injury, compartment syndrome, and transfusion rates among civilian ballistic orthopaedic fracture patients presenting to two Level I trauma centres
ConclusionThese findings underscore the importance of diagnosing and managing vascular injuries and compartment syndrome in GSW-related orthopaedic fractures, emphasizing the necessity for targeted transfusion strategies in such cases. Sonographic diagnosis of radiographically undetectable bennet fracture
We report the case of a 62-year-old man in whom a Bennet fracture was highly suspected on ultrasound (US) examination realized after a fall. Standard radiographs, obtained after US to confirm the diagnosis, were interpreted as normal. A computed tomography was then performed showing a typical Bennet fracture. This case report demonstrates that a careful assessment of bones must be an integral part of any routine musculo-skeletal US examination, particularly in post-traumatic patients. US can detect bone fractures where radiograph is not discriminating. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound)

Lower anxiety level to perform movements after revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with lateral extra-articular tenodesis compared to without lateral extra-articular tenodesis

Accurate placement of thoracolumbar pedicle screws using a handheld iOS-based navigation device: a prospective intra-patient agreement study
Accurate pedicle screw placement is a challenge with reported misplacement rates of 10% and higher. A handheld navigation device (HND) may provide accuracy equal to CT-based navigation (CT-Nav) but without the cost and complexity. (Source: The Spine Journal)

Antibiotic Laden Bone Cement Does Not Reduce Acute Periprosthetic Joint Infection Risk in Primary TKA
Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) can be a serious complication of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). A method believed to decrease the incidence of PJI is antibiotic laden bone cement (ALBC). Current clinical practice guidelines do not recommend ALBC in primary TKA. The purpose of this study was to compare ALBC to plain cement (PC) in preventing PJI in primary TKA.
