Tobacco-free blunt wraps: a regulatory conundrum
Cigars (eg, large manufactured cigars, cigarillos) are among the most used combustible tobacco products in the USA.1 2 Some of the popularity of cigars may be driven by the ability to modify them to smoke cannabis ‘blunts’ (ie, hollowed-out cigars filled with cannabis or a mixture of tobacco and cannabis).3–5 Smoking blunts could expose users to greater levels of carcinogens than smoking either cannabis or tobacco alone,6 and, among adolescents and young adults who smoke cigarettes and use cannabis, those who use blunts have greater dependence on nicotine and cannabis than those who use cannabis in forms ...

Environmental influences on E-cigarette use among young people: A systematic review
Health Place. 2024 Mar 16;87:103212. doi: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2024.103212. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTE-cigarettes are a popular mode of delivery for nicotine, tobacco and cannabis. The prevalence of vaping among youth is increasing and this review aims to identify features of the neighbourhood environment, e.g., retailers, advertisements, and policies, that are associated with youth vaping. We included 48 studies. Of these, approximately 40% and 60% reported that presence of e-cigarette retailers, and advertisements, was associated with statistically higher odds of e-cigarette use in youth, respectively. Approximatel...

Feasibility of precision smoking treatment in a low-income community setting: results of a pilot randomized controlled trial in The Southern Community Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: Genetically informed precision smoking cessation interventions are feasible in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities, exhibiting high enrollment, engagement, and retention irrespective of race, sex, income, education, or attitudes toward precision smoking treatment. Future smoking cessation interventions in this population should take steps to engage older people and to sustain participation in interventions that include genetic risk counseling.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov No. NCT03521141, Registered 27 April 2018, https://www.CLINICALTRIALS: gov/study/NCT03521141.PMID:38491559 | PMC:PMC1094144...

Nicotine downregulates miR-375-3p via neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase 2 to enhance the malignant behaviors of laryngopharyngeal squamous epithelial cells
In this study, we discovered a significant association between smoking and HNSCC metastasis and prognosis. Nicotine significantly enhanced HNSCC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in vitro. Analysis of TCGA-HNSCC and FDEENT-HNSCC cohorts revealed reduced miR-375-3p levels in HNSCC tumor tissues, particularly among current smokers. Additionally, miR-375-3p level was strongly correlated with both lymph node metastasis and tumor stage. By downregulating miR-375-3p, nicotine promotes HNSCC cell metastasis in vitro and hematogenous metastatic capacity in vivo. Utilizing transcri...

Former smoking, but not active smoking, is associated with delirium in postoperative ICU patients: a matched case-control study
DiscussionNicotine’s complex neuropharmacological impact on the brain is still not fully understood, especially its short-term and long-term implications for critically ill patients. Although our retrospective study cannot establish causality, our findings suggest that smoking may induce structural changes in the brain, potentially heightening the risk of postoperative delirium. Intriguingly, this effect seems to be obscured in active smokers, potentially due to the recognized neuroprotective properties of nicotine. Our results motivate future prospective studies, the results of which hold the potential to substantially ...

The Fagerstr öm Test for Nicotine Dependence, as a prognostic factor, in current smokers with and without COPD: A cross-sectional study in northern Greece
CONCLUSION: The Fagerström score appears to indicate a higher probability for COPD and lung function deterioration when assessed along with age in current smokers. Smoking cessation support programs are fundamental to COPD prevention and management.PMID:38476003 | DOI:10.1177/14799731241235213 (Source: Chronic Respiratory Disease)

Structural Impact Assessment of Cytochrome P450 2A13 Polymorphisms Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations
This study aimed to unravel the mechanism underlying the diminished enzymatic activity of CYP2A13 variants by investigating their three-dimensional structures through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. For each variant, MD simulations of 1000 ns were performed, and the obtained results were compared with those of the wild type. The findings indicated alterations in the interaction with heme in CYP2A13.4, .6, .8, and .9. In the case of CYP2A13.5, observable effects on the helix structure related to the interaction with the redox partner were identified. These conformational changes were sufficient to cause a decrease in e...
