BioNano In Peril Again
While I still have a pair of pre-AGBT and AGBT interviews to write up - plus a long list of post ideas inspired by AGBT - breaking news about BioNano Genomics takes precedence.   The company has announced a major restructuring, with about 30% of its employees being laid off.  I've been laid off twice and it's never enjoyable, so I hope what I write here is appropriately sensitive - but won't be surprised if I still commit a faux pas.   Even with the restructuring, one analyst who likes BioNano estimated they will have about three quarters of cash - this is indeed a perilous time.Read more » (Source: Omics! Irrationality
One assumption that economic theorists have been weirdly fond of is the idea that as consumers, and investors, people are " rational actors. " We ' ll put the investor aside for the time being and just consider ourselves as consumers -- people who buy stuff with money. (We also consume a lot that we don ' t pay for but that ' s for another day.) The idea of rationality in this context means, first of all, that our desires for goods and services that might be on sale are quantifiable in units called utiles, an idea which has always been kind of vague, but basically it means that I can say that three tomatoes right now ...

Wednesday Bible Study: Imprecatory prayer for terrorism
In Psalm 69, the protagonist has for unspecified reasons become an outcast, so he begs God to destroy his enemies. Check out verse 22 et seq. While this is attributed to David, there isn ' t really any point in David ' s story that would correspond to this situation. But petitioning God to commit mass violence is a common theme in the psalms. To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. A Psalm of David.69 Save me, O God!For the waters have come up to my neck.2 I sink in deep mire,    where there is no foothold;I have come into deep waters,    and the flood sweeps over me.3 ...

How Healthcare Can Manage Compliance with Fine-Grained Protection
The following is a guest article by Marlena Herrera, Director at Protegrity Healthcare organizations are becoming more lucrative targets for hackers, as their data is rich with extremely sensitive information and is often susceptible to vulnerabilities. In the same step, the number of regulations governing the sector has grown in complexity, which stems from movements including the HIPAA Right of Access Initiative and fallout from the reversal of federally protected abortion access. Combining this with the increasing number of digital-first health applications and services on the market, protecting data at every touchpoint...

Sunday Sermonette: The Just World Fallacy
The " just world fallacy " or illusion is a cognitive bias that assumes the consequences of actions are morally determined -- that people ultimately get what they deserve based on the rightness of their actions. Psalms 36 and 37 are among many that express this fallacy as fact. Indeed, the just world fallacy is central to most religions -- God rewards the righteous and faithful, and punishes the wicked and impious. Of course this is not true. Note verse 11 of Psalm 37, which the RSV translates as " The meek shall possess the land. " KJV translates this as " The meek shall inherit the earth, " and I suspect that ...

Sunday Sermonette: It's complicated
Psalm 31, first of all, cannot possibly have been written by David, because it is derivative of works known to have been written in the 5th Century BC. (Although some no doubt have earlier sources, the compilation was made in the 5th Century.) It is well known. Verse 5 is the source of the purported last words of Jesus. It is quite self-contradictory however. The speaker is in a miserable state, apparently physically repulsive, and either paranoid or in fact subject to persecution. Yet he is full of praise for God ' s goodness, begging for succor and apparently expecting to get it. This is the fundamental contradiction of ...
