Neighborhood-level Social Determinants of Health and Cardioprotective Behaviors among Church Members in New Orleans, Louisiana
CONCLUSIONS: In this predominantly Black, church-based population, neighborhood-level SDoH including the availability of fruits and vegetables, walkability or conduciveness to exercise, and social cohesion were associated with cardioprotective behaviors. Findings reiterate the need to address adverse neighborhood-level SDoH in the design and implementation of health interventions.PMID:38556001 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2024.03.019 (Source: The American Journal of the Medical Sciences)

Addressing Cardiovascular Toxicity Risk of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems in the Twenty-First Century: "What Are the Tools Needed for the Job?" and "Do We Have Them?"
Cardiovasc Toxicol. 2024 Mar 31. doi: 10.1007/s12012-024-09850-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCigarette smoking is positively and robustly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), including hypertension, atherosclerosis, cardiac arrhythmias, stroke, thromboembolism, myocardial infarctions, and heart failure. However, after more than a decade of ENDS presence in the U.S. marketplace, uncertainty persists regarding the long-term health consequences of ENDS use for CVD. New approach methods (NAMs) in the field of toxicology are being developed to enhance rapid prediction of human health hazards. Recent technical advanc...

Effects of nicotine on microRNA-124 expression in bile duct ligation-induced liver fibrosis in rats
CONCLUSION: Considering that miRNA-124 is an anti-inflammatory miRNA, it can be concluded that the decrease in its expression due to nicotine exposure leads to an increase in inflammatory processes and subsequently to an increase in liver fibrosis.PMID:38549169 | DOI:10.1186/s40360-024-00749-3 (Source: BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology)

Chronic nicotine exposure is associated with electrophysiological and sympathetic remodeling in the intact rabbit heart
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2024 Mar 29. doi: 10.1152/ajpheart.00749.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNicotine is the primary addictive component in tobacco products. Through its actions on the heart and autonomic nervous system, nicotine exposure is associated with electrophysiological changes and increased arrhythmia susceptibility. To assess underlying mechanisms, we treated rabbits with transdermal nicotine (NIC, 21 mg/day) or control (CT) patches for 28 days prior to performing dual optical mapping of transmembrane potential (RH237) and intracellular Ca2+ (Rhod-2 AM) in isolated hearts with intact sympathetic ...
