A novel four ‑gene biomarker for tobacco smoking -induced colorectal cancer progression
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, a new four smoking-related genes can be jointly used as prognostic markers for CRC. AKR1B10 served as a tumor suppressor, can be used as a potential target to inhibit NNK-induced CRC malignant progression through regulating Wnt signaling pathway.IMPLICATIONS: This study demonstrates tobacco-derived NNK dependence would promote the malignant progression of colorectal cancer through regulating the expressions of AKR1B10/Wnt signaling pathway. And a novel four-gene signature is established for the prognosis prediction of smoking CRC patients. These findings have important translational implications ...

β-Lapachone, an NQO1 bioactivatable drug, prevents lung tumorigenesis in mice
In conclusion, our study suggests that long-term consumption of low-dose β-Lap could potentially be an effective therapeutic strategy for the prevention of lung premalignant lesions. However, further studies and clinical trials are necessary to validate our findings, determine the safety of long-term β-Lap usage in human, and promote the use of β-Lap in high-risk populations.PMID:38604545 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejphar.2024.176511 (Source: European Journal of Pharmacology)

Impact of statutory revisions to family-petitioned civil commitment in South Korea
CONCLUSION: The findings were based on cross-sectional correlational data and should not be viewed as conclusive evidence that the 2016 statutory revision is ineffective in preventing family-petitioned civil commitment in cases where dangerousness is not apparent. Nevertheless, these findings encourage further empirical studies that illuminate the etiology of procedural justice in civil commitments petitioned by family members and that assess factors and contexts that promote the consideration of least coercive treatments, rather than resorting to involuntary hospitalization when psychiatric emergencies arise.PMID:38603975...

ERAS Implementation in Thoracic Surgery
Zentralbl Chir. 2024 Apr 11. doi: 10.1055/a-2276-1694. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis manuscript provides an overview of the principles and requirements for implementing the ERAS program in thoracic surgery. The ERAS program optimises perioperative management of elective lung resection procedures and is based on the ERAS Guidelines for Thoracic Surgery of the ERAS Society. The clinical measures are described as in the current literature, with a focus on postoperative outcome. There are currently 45 enhanced recovery items covering four perioperative phases: from the prehospital admission phase (patient education, screen...
