Preventive effects of crocin, a natural compound from saffron, against nicotine ‑induced oxidative stress and neurobehavioral disturbances
In this study, we explore the neuroprotective effects of crocin, a bioactive agent commonly found in saffron - a spice derived from the flower of Crocus sativus - using a rat model. The dose‑dependent effects of crocin were evaluated in nicotine‑induced neurodegeneration and compared with a control group. Neurobehavioral changes, assessed through the elevated plus maze, the open field test, the forced swim test, and the Morris water maze, as well as oxidative stress in the hippocampus, were evaluated. Interestingly, nicotine administration resulted in depression, anxiety, and abnormal motor and cognitive functions, whi...

High-risk smoking in the United States: Nicotine staining predicts increased colonic adenomas and advanced adenomas on colonoscopy
CONCLUSION: This marks the first investigation of nicotine staining within gastroenterology. We have demonstrated that the presence of nicotine staining independently predicts numerous adenomas and advanced adenomas.PMID:38583603 | DOI:10.1016/j.ypmed.2024.107950 (Source: Cancer Control)

An exploratory, randomised, crossover study to investigate the effect of nicotine on cognitive function in healthy adult smokers who use an electronic cigarette after a period of smoking abstinence
As well as being associated with serious negative health outcomes, smoking has been reported to have an array of physiological and psychological effects, including effects on mood and cognitive function. Post-... (Source: Harm Reduction Journal)

Reconstructing axial progenitor field dynamics in mouse stem cell-derived embryoids
Dev Cell. 2024 Apr 3:S1534-5807(24)00192-8. doi: 10.1016/j.devcel.2024.03.024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmbryogenesis requires substantial coordination to translate genetic programs to the collective behavior of differentiating cells, but understanding how cellular decisions control tissue morphology remains conceptually and technically challenging. Here, we combine continuous Cas9-based molecular recording with a mouse embryonic stem cell-based model of the embryonic trunk to build single-cell phylogenies that describe the behavior of transient, multipotent neuro-mesodermal progenitors (NMPs) as they commit into neur...

Protective effect of enicostemma axillare - swertiamarin on oxidative stress against nicotine-induced liver damage in sd rats
CONCLUSION: The results of the current study show that nicotine can seriously harm liver tissue and that Swertiamarin can prevent the harmful effects of nicotine on rat liver. Future research is necessary to delve deeply into the mechanisms behind Swertiamarin protective impact against nicotine-induced hepatotoxicity.PMID:38579927 | DOI:10.1016/j.pharma.2024.03.009 (Source: Annales Pharmaceutiques Francaises)

A discrete choice experiment on price and flavour effects on the appeal of nicotine products: a pilot study among young adults in Switzerland
CONCLUSIONS: Our Discrete Choice Experiment suggests that, for the Swiss context, limiting the availability of flavours for alternative smoking products has the potential to reduce their appeal to non-smokers by 86% and that a small but significant increase in prices to CHF 15 for cigarettes, ENDS and HTS could lead to a major (around 66%) decrease in their appeal.PMID:38579318 | DOI:10.57187/s.3733 (Source: Swiss Medical Weekly)
