Single-cut derotational osteotomy of the distal femur for correction of torsion and frontal axis
Oper Orthop Traumatol. 2024 Mar 27. doi: 10.1007/s00064-024-00844-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: A rotational osteotomy requires a complete cut of the bone in order to correct maltorsion. An additional correction of the frontal axis can be achieved via an oblique cut of the bone. The osteotomy with bone to bone contact is fixed with an angle stable plate.INDICATIONS: Symptoms such as anterior knee pain, inwardly pointing knee syndrome, lateral patellar subluxation or dislocation, lateral patellar hypercompression syndrome are a common indication for derivational osteotomy if clinically increased femoral intern...

The Noble Suicide: The Case of a Self-Contained Dagger in the Heart and a Literal Raw
Case Rep Psychiatry. 2024 Mar 19;2024:3017903. doi: 10.1155/2024/3017903. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTAccording to WHO estimates, more than 700,000 people die each year due to suicide and suicides performed with a bladed weapon account for approximately 1.6%-3% of all suicides. It is statistically more common to find injuries to the heart, lungs, and thoracic vessels in homicides, whereas in suicides there is a higher frequency of vascular injuries to the extremities of the limbs. Also in suicides, the presence of "hesitation marks," related to the attempts the victim makes before having the courage to kill himself, can often...

The Use and Knowledge Around Vaping and Their Correlates Among University Students —A Cross-sectional Australian Study
AbstractThe increasing prevalence of e-cigarette use ( “vaping”) among youth has emerged as a public health concern. We aim to explore vape use, knowledge levels, and correlates in a sample of Australian young adults. Participants from six residential university colleges in Queensland, Australia, were invited to complete an online survey. The sample included 716 students (Mage=18.1 years). Correlates of vape use and knowledge examined included socio-demographic variables, other substance use, and mental health, including PHQ-9 depression and GAD-7 anxiety. In our sample, 62% of students reported lifetime vaping. Just u...

Transdermal Nicotine Patch Increases the Number and Function of Endothelial Progenitor Cells in Young Healthy Nonsmokers without Adverse Hemodynamic Effects
In conclusion, 7-day TNP treatments could be a practical strategy to enhance angiogenesis of circulating EPCs to alleviate tissue ischemia without any hemodynamic concern.PMID:38529793 | DOI:10.1002/cpt.3249 (Source: Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics)

Screening for depression and anxiety in lung cancer patients: A real ‐world study using GAD‐7 and HADS
ConclusionThe study affirms the feasibility of GAD-7, PHQ-9, and HADS as screening tools for depressive and anxiety symptoms in lung cancer patients. It further highlights tobacco and alcohol consumption as significant risk factors for poor psychological health in this population. (Source: Thoracic Cancer)

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1464: A Study on the Antibacterial, Antispasmodic, Antipyretic, and Anti-Inflammatory Activity of ZnO Nanoparticles Using Leaf Extract from Jasminum sambac (L. Aiton)
g-Cheol Kim The green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using plants has grown in significance in recent years. ZnO NPs were synthesized in this work via a chemical precipitation method with Jasminum sambac (JS) leaf extract serving as a capping agent. These NPs were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, and DTA. The results from UV-vis and FT-IR confirmed the band gap energies (3.37 eV and 3.50 eV) and the presence of the following functional groups: CN, OH, C=O, and NH. A spherical structure and an average grain size of 26 nm were confirmed via XRD. The size and surface mor...

Indicaxanthin prevents eryptosis induced by cigarette smoke extract by interfering with active Fas ‐mediated signaling
In conclusion, Ind concentrations comparable to nutritionally relevant plasma concentrations, can prevent Fas-mediated RBC death signaling induced by CSE, which suggests that di etary intake of cactus pear fruits may limit the deleterious effects of cigarette smoking. (Source: BioFactors)

Benefits of conditioned medium of nicotine-pulsed mesenchymal stem cells in experimental autoimmune hepatitis
Tissue Cell. 2024 Mar 13;88:102359. doi: 10.1016/j.tice.2024.102359. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrevious data indicated that nicotine could modulate the immune regulatory potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Currently, we intend to assess the effects of a conditioned medium of nicotine-pulsed mesenchymal stem cells in the experimental model of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Bone marrow-derived MSCs pulsed with 0,.1,.5, or 1 μM nicotine until the cells reached 90% confluency. Correspondent to in vitro results, the least effective concentration of nicotine that led to an anti-inflammatory environment by the MSC-condi...
