Hepatopathy secondary to infiltration by malignant melanoma: diagnostic value of liver biopsy
We present the case of a 61-year-old male with no relevant history of interest who was admitted to hospital due to constitutional syndrome and discomfort in the right hypochondrium. On admission, abdominal ultrasound was performed with findings of chronic liver disease and innumerable well-defined hypoechogenic lesions of small size. Although the study was extended with other imaging tests, they did not provide more information than what was available at the time. Subsequently, an ultrasound-guided liver biopsy was performed with pathological anatomy compatible with infiltration by malignant melanoma. Subsequently, a searc...

Prognostic value of liver stiffness in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease patients with high liver stiffness measurement values were at an increased risk of liver-related events. Liver stiffness measurement can be used as a prognostic tool to achieve risk stratification in fatty liver patients.PMID:38685902 | DOI:10.17235/reed.2024.10353/2024 (Source: Revista Espanola de Enfermedades Digestivas)

Pancreaticoduodenectomy in a patient with severe portal hypertension: the role of preoperative TIPS
We present the case of a 67 year-old patient case with a resectable ampullary cancer and portal hypertension managed with Preoperative Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) to allow a PD. We present a literature review on the use of preoperative TIPS in patients who are candidates to PD. Neoadjuvant TIPS can be safely used in selected patients with severe portal hypertension who need a PD.PMID:38685904 | DOI:10.17235/reed.2024.10431/2024 (Source: Revista Espanola de Enfermedades Digestivas)

Evaluation of the Efficacy and Safety of Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate in Intercepting Mother-to-Child Transmission of Hepatitis B Virus
This study assessed the effects of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) in pregnant women for mother-to-infant transmission of HBV. A total of 122 pregnant women at our hospital met the inclusion criteria for high HBV DNA viral loads. They were randomly divided into TDF-treatment (n=70) and placebo (n=52) groups. Maternal liver function and serum HBV DNA load were tested before and after treatment. Clinical and laboratory data of infants were assayed at delivery and 7-months post-partum visit and compared between the two groups. There was no difference in clinical characteristics of participants between the two groups. Ther...

Cholangiocarcinoma and Occupational Exposure to Asbestos: Insights From the Italian Pooled Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: Further studies are needed to explore the association between occupational exposure to asbestos and CC. Record linkage was hampered due to incomplete coverage of the study areas and periods by Cancer Registries. The identification of CC among unspecific histology cases is fundamental to establish more effective and targeted liver cancer screening strategies.PMID:38686579 | DOI:10.23749/mdl.v115i2.14649 (Source: Medicina del Lavoro)

Risk factors and outcome of antenatally diagnosed congenital diaphragmatic hernia following in-utero transfer in a busy public-sector tertiary care center in North India
Monaldi Arch Chest Dis. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.4081/monaldi.2024.2880. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe analyzed the risk factors and outcomes of antenatally diagnosed congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) from a tertiary-care children's hospital following in-utero transfer. A total of 41 antenatally detected cases of CDH were included; 30 were live-born and 11 were still-born. The primary outcome was postnatal survival. The secondary outcome was the probable factor affecting survival. No medical termination of the pregnancy was done. The mean gestational age at diagnosis was 23 weeks. The diagnostic accuracy of antenatal ul...

Pharmacokinetic, Pharmacodynamic, and Safety Profiles of Proline Henagliflozin in Chinese Subjects with Varying Degrees of Liver Dysfunction
J Clin Pharmacol. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1002/jcph.2437. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProline henagliflozin, a novel selective inhibitor of sodium glucose cotransporter 2, is a treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus. We designed a parallel-group, open-label, and multicenter study to evaluate the pharmacokinetic (PK), pharmacodynamic (PD), and safety profiles of henagliflozin in Chinese subjects with varying degrees of liver dysfunction. Thirty-two subjects were enrolled and divided into four groups based on liver function (normal liver function, mild, moderate, or severe liver dysfunction). The area under the plasma concent...

Underreporting Supplements: A Case of Drug-induced Liver Injury Due to a Testosterone Booster
Mil Med. 2024 Apr 30:usae136. doi: 10.1093/milmed/usae136. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute liver injuries (ALIs) are caused by a wide range of etiologies, and determining the cause can often be challenging. Detailed history taking is essential in patients with liver injuries to promptly determine the underlying source of injury and for timely treatment and prognosis. A 27-year-old active duty man presented to the emergency department (ED) with jaundice. On medication reconciliation, he only reported taking acetaminophen for a recent upper respiratory infection. The patient had an ALI and was treated with N-acetyl cyste...

The role of Ca < sup > 2+ < /sup > signalling and InsP3R in the pathogenesis of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy
CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed that the expression of InsP3R and serum Ca2+ levels was significantly decreased in the liver tissue of ICP model rats. Additionally, Ca2+ levels were found to be negatively correlated with the level of glycocholic acid.PMID:38685831 | DOI:10.1080/01443615.2024.2345276 (Source: Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Impact of sub-chronic polystyrene nanoplastics exposure on hematology, histology, and endoplasmic reticulum stress-related protein expression in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
Comp Biochem Physiol B Biochem Mol Biol. 2024 Apr 28:110982. doi: 10.1016/j.cbpb.2024.110982. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNanoplastics (NPs) are one of the most hazardous marine litters, having the potential to cause far-reaching impacts on the environment and humankind. The effect of NPs on fish health has been studied, but their impact on the subcellular organelles remains unexplored. The present investigation studied the possible implications of polystyrene-nanoplastics (PS-NPs) on the hematology, tissue organization, and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related proteins in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish ...

Multi-omics approach characterizes the role of Bisphenol F in disrupting hepatic lipid metabolism
Environ Int. 2024 Apr 24;187:108690. doi: 10.1016/j.envint.2024.108690. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBisphenol F (BPF), a substitute for bisphenol A (BPA), is ubiquitous existed in various environmental media. Exposure to BPF may promote non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), while the potential mechanism is still unknown. In current study, we used in vitro and in vivo model to evaluate its hepatotoxicity and molecular mechanism. Using multi-omics approach, we found that BPF exposure led to changes in hepatic transcriptome, metabolome and chromatin accessible regions that were enriched for binding sites of transcripti...
