Curr Drug Deliv. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.2174/0115672018292331240404070236. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLiver cancer is the sixth most common cancer and the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) comprises 75-80% of liver cancer cases. Therapeutic strategies for HCC are available and have been shown to prolong survival but not treat HCC. Gene expression and regulation are responsible for the pathogenesis and progression of HCC. Altering these genetic networks can impact cellular behaviors and in turn cure HCC. Single-stranded and double-stranded non-coding ribonucleic acid known as microRNA a...

DDX39B protects against sorafenib-induced ferroptosis by facilitating the splicing and cytoplasmic export of GPX4 pre-mRNA in hepatocellular carcinoma
Biochem Pharmacol. 2024 May 1:116251. doi: 10.1016/j.bcp.2024.116251. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the main histological subtype of primary liver cancer and remains one of the most common solid malignancies globally. Ferroptosis was recently defined as an iron-catalyzed form of regulated necrosis. Because cancer cells exhibit higher iron requirements than noncancer cells, treatment with ferroptosis-inducing compounds may be a feasible strategy for cancer therapy. However, cancer cells develop acquired resistance to evade ferroptosis, and the mechanisms responsible for ferroptosis resistan...

Acoustic Delivery of Plasma Low-Density Lipoprotein into Liver via ApoB100-Targeted Microbubbles Inhibits Atherosclerotic Plaque Growth
ACS Appl Mater Interfaces. 2024 May 3. doi: 10.1021/acsami.4c00999. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is the main risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which accounts for the majority of mortality worldwide. A significantly increased plasma level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), surrounded by a monolayer of phospholipids, free cholesterol, and one apolipoprotein B-100 (ApoB-100) in the blood, plays the most significant role in driving the development of atherosclerosis. Commercially available cholesterol-lowering drugs are not sufficient for preventing recurrent cardiovascular events. Developin...

Exploring exercise-driven exerkines: unraveling the regulation of metabolism and inflammation
PeerJ. 2024 Apr 29;12:e17267. doi: 10.7717/peerj.17267. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTExercise has many beneficial effects that provide health and metabolic benefits. Signaling molecules are released from organs and tissues in response to exercise stimuli and are widely termed exerkines, which exert influence on a multitude of intricate multi-tissue processes, such as muscle, adipose tissue, pancreas, liver, cardiovascular tissue, kidney, and bone. For the metabolic effect, exerkines regulate the metabolic homeostasis of organisms by increasing glucose uptake and improving fat synthesis. For the anti-inflammatory effect, exerki...

Peritoneal dialysis in an end-stage renal disease patient with massive ascites and primary liver cancer
We present a case of a 68-year-old male patient with ESRD who experienced various decompensated complications of liver cirrhosis, particularly massive ascites and hepatic space-occupying lesions. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter insertion and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) treatment were successfully performed. During meticulous follow-up, the patient survived for one year but ultimately succumbed to complications related to liver cancer. PD can serve as an efficacious therapeutic approach for such late-stage patients afflicted together with severe cirrhosis, massive ascites and primary liver cancer.PMID...
