Necroptosis contributes to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease pathoetiology with promising diagnostic and therapeutic functions
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 14;30(14):1968-1981. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i14.1968.ABSTRACTNonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent type of chronic liver disease. However, the disease is underappreciated as a remarkable chronic disorder as there are rare managing strategies. Several studies have focused on determining NAFLD-caused hepatocyte death to elucidate the disease pathoetiology and suggest functional therapeutic and diagnostic options. Pyroptosis, ferroptosis, and necroptosis are the main subtypes of non-apoptotic regulated cell deaths (RCDs), each of which represents particular characteristic...

Prevalence and predictive features of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease in type 1 diabetes
CONCLUSION: Individuals with type 1 diabetes and high blood pressure, older age, BMI and duration of disease could be considered at high-risk for developing MASLD.PMID:38679966 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvae043 (Source: European Journal of Endocrinology)

Interplay between metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and renal function: An intriguing pediatric perspective
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 21;30(15):2081-2086. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i15.2081.ABSTRACTOver recent years, the nomenclature of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has undergone significant changes. Indeed, in 2020, an expert consensus panel proposed the term "Metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease" (MAFLD) to underscore the close association of fatty liver with metabolic abnormalities, thereby highlighting the cardiometabolic risks (such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease) faced by these patients since childhood. More recently, this term has been further ...

Current status of liver transplantation for human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients in mainland China
This study provides an overview of the current landscape of HIV-positive patients receiving liver transplantation (LT) in mainland China. To date, our transplant center has conducted LT for eight end-stage liver disease patients co-infected with HIV, and all but one, who died two months postoperatively due to sepsis and progressive multi-organ failure, have survived. Comparative analysis with hepatitis B virus-infected patients during the same period revealed no statistically significant differences in acute rejection reactions, cytomegalovirus infection, bacteremia, pulmonary infections, acute kidney injury, new-onset can...

Targeted Knockdown of Hepatic delta-5 Fatty Acid Desaturase FADS1 Aggravates Atherosclerosis in ApoE(-/-) Mice
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that knockdown of hepatic Fads1 in ApoE-⁣/- mice aggravates spontaneous atherosclerosis and NAFLD but does not affect peripheral atherosclerosis (femoral artery) induced by vascular cuff combined with tandem stenosis.PMID:38682200 | DOI:10.31083/j.fbl2904131 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Delineating the heterogeneity of senescence-induced-functional alterations in hepatocytes
CONCLUSION: In our study, we demonstrated that each senescence inducer activates a unique combination of senescence markers in PMH. Doxorubicin demonstrated the highest efficacy in inducing senescence, followed by cisplatin and H2O2, with no impact on apoptosis. Each inducer prompted DNA damage response and mitochondrial dysfunction, independent of MAPK/AKT.PMID:38684535 | DOI:10.1007/s00018-024-05230-2 (Source: Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences : CMLS)

Decoding bioactive signals of the RNA secretome: the cell-free messenger RNA catalogue
Expert Rev Mol Med. 2024 Apr 29;26:e12. doi: 10.1017/erm.2024.12.ABSTRACTDespite gene-expression profiling being one of the most common methods to evaluate molecular dysregulation in tissues, the utilization of cell-free messenger RNA (cf-mRNA) as a blood-based non-invasive biomarker analyte has been limited compared to other RNA classes. Recent advancements in low-input RNA-sequencing and normalization techniques, however, have enabled characterization as well as accurate quantification of cf-mRNAs allowing direct pathological insights. The molecular profile of the cell-free transcriptome in multiple diseases has subseque...
