A high-throughput analytical method for complex contaminant mixtures in biosolids
In this study, a simplified, rapid, and robust method of analysis was developed and validated for a high-priority organic contaminant mixture of 44 endocrine disrupting compounds known to occur in biosolids. Analytes consisted of chemicals from many classes with a wide range of physiochemical properties (e.g., log Kow values from -1.4 to 8.9). The biosolids extraction and cleanup protocol was validated for 42 of the targeted compounds. The UPLC-MS2 parameters were validated for all 44 organic contaminants targeted for study. From the two batches of biosolids tested using this analytical method, most of the targeted contami...

Efficacy of intraoperative systemic lidocaine on quality of recovery after laparoscopic colorectal surgery: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: In patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surgery, intraoperative systemic lidocaine resulted in statistically but not clinically significant improvements in quality of recovery (see Graphical Abstract).Trial registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry; ChiCTR1900027635.PMID:38346397 | PMC:PMC10863528 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2024.2315229 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Contribution of chemical and electrical transmission to the low delta-like intrinsic retinal oscillation in mice: A role for daylight-activated neuromodulators
Eur J Pharmacol. 2024 Feb 9:176384. doi: 10.1016/j.ejphar.2024.176384. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBasal electroretinogram (ERG) oscillations have shown predictive value for modifiable risk factors for type 2 diabetes. However, their origin remains unknown. Here, we seek to establish the pharmacological profile of the low delta-like (δ1) wave in the mouse because it shows light sensitivity in the form of a decreased peak frequency upon photopic exposure. Applying neuropharmacological drugs by intravitreal injection, we eliminated the δ1 wave using lidocaine or by blocking all chemical and electrical synapses. The δ1 w...

A Randomized Comparison of Multimodal Analgesia and Fentanyl-Based Patient-Controlled Analgesia in Women Undergoing Robot-Assisted Bilateral Axillary Breast Approach Thyroidectomy
J Clin Med. 2024 Jan 25;13(3):702. doi: 10.3390/jcm13030702.ABSTRACTOpioid-free multimodal analgesia (MMA) emerges as a preferable approach for postoperative pain management compared to opioid-based patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) in robot-assisted bilateral axillary breast approach thyroidectomy, a procedure commonly undergone by young female patients. We compared the analgesic efficacy and other recovery profiles between MMA and PCA. In total, 88 female patients were administered fentanyl-based PCA or the combination of lidocaine continuous infusion and nefopam injection before recovery from general anesthesia. The vi...

Beyond Traditional Pain Relief: A Review of Alternative Analgesics in Myocardial Infarction Patient Management
J Pain Palliat Care Pharmacother. 2024 Feb 8:1-13. doi: 10.1080/15360288.2024.2304008. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhile morphine is the recommended first-line treatment for pain management in patients with acute coronary syndrome, recent studies have raised concerns about its association with adverse outcomes. Morphine has been found to cause delayed antiplatelet effects, decreased ticagrelor absorption, increased platelet reactivity, and compromised efficacy of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). Alternative analgesics, such as lidocaine, fentanyl, and acetaminophen, have begun to emerge as viable alternatives, each with...

Targeted local anesthesia: a novel slow-release Fe3O4 –lidocaine–PLGA microsphere endowed with a magnetic targeting function
ConclusionMagnetically responsive lidocaine microspheres can prolong analgesia by slowly releasing lidocaine, which can be immobilized around the nerve by a magnetic field on the body surface, avoiding premature diffusion of the microspheres to surrounding tissues and improving drug targeting. A Cross-Sectional Survey on Pain Management in Dermal Filler Injections from Physicians ’ and Patients’ Perspectives
ConclusionsPain management during hyaluronic acid dermal fillers injection is important from both perspectives of physicians and patients. This survey showed that compared with other analgesic methods, lidocaine-containing hyaluronic acid has offered a more satisfying experience. It also provides insights to physicians and patients in pain management.Level of Evidence VThis journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article.
