Sustainable Alternatives to Petroleum-Derived Excipients in Pharmaceutical Oil-in-Water Creams
AAPS PharmSciTech. 2024 Mar 27;25(4):68. doi: 10.1208/s12249-024-02784-z.ABSTRACTRecently, vast efforts towards sustainability have been made in the pharmaceutical industry. In conventional oil-in-water (O/W) cream formulations, various petroleum-based excipients, namely mineral oil and petrolatum, are commonly used. Natural or synthetic excipients, derived from vegetable sources, were explored as alternatives to petroleum-based excipients in prototype topical creams, with 1% (w/w) lidocaine. A conventional cream comprised of petroleum-derived excipients was compared to creams containing sustainable excipients in terms of ...

Enhancing Safety in Tumescent Liposuction: Managing Sedation-Related Respiratory Issues and Serious Complications Under Deep Sedation with the Propofol –Ketamine Protocol
ConclusionsThe analysis of 3094 tumescent liposuction cases highlighted the overall safety profile of the propofol –ketamine protocol under deep sedation. The scarcity of severe complications underscores its viability. The study emphasizes the significance of thorough preoperative assessments, careful patient selection, and awareness of potential complications. Prompt interventions, particularly in addressing sedation-related respiratory issues, further contribute to positive outcomes for patients.Level of Evidence IVThis journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1267: Anti-Proliferative Effects of Lidocaine as an Autophagy Inducer in Bladder Cancer via Intravesical Instillation: In Vitro and Xenograft Mouse Model Experiments
young Hwa Kim Lidocaine exerts potential anti-tumor effects on various cancer cell lines, and its intravesical instillation is considered safer than intravenous administration for bladder cancer. However, the mechanisms underlying its anti-tumor effects have not been fully elucidated. Here, we aimed to elucidate the anti-tumor molecular mechanisms of lidocaine in bladder cancer cells and a xenograft model to substantiate the efficacy of its intravesical administration. We investigated the anti-proliferative and autophagyinducing activities of lidocaine in Nara Bladder Tumor No. 2 (NBT-II) rat bladder carcinoma cells us...

Incidence and Risk Factors for ICU-Associated Delirium in the Alert Geriatric Trauma Population
This study analyzed the overall incidence of delirium, comorbid conditions, injury patterns, and pharmacological risk factors for the development of delirium in an alert, geriatric trauma population.METHODS: IRB-approved, prospective, consecutive cohort series at two Southeastern Level 1 trauma centers from June 11 to August 15, 2023. Delirium was assessed using the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) score. Comorbidities and medications were detailed from electronic medical records. Inclusion criteria: age ≥55, GCS ≥14, and ICU admission for trauma. Patients on a ventilator were excluded. Data was analyzed using SPSS ve...

Intraoperative Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy: A Case Report
J Perianesth Nurs. 2024 Mar 21:S1089-9472(23)01103-6. doi: 10.1016/j.jopan.2023.12.014. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTakotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is a rare condition associated with transient akinesia of apical segments and hyperkinesia of basal segments of the heart. Although several mechanisms have been proposed to cause direct and indirect myocardial damage owing to catecholamine excess, the underlying pathophysiology remains unknown. An 18-year-old female was referred to our otorhinolaryngology outpatient clinic for a septorhinoplasty. Apart from the fear of surgery, the patient had no other health issues. After the...

Refined Sound Therapy in Combination with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to Treat Tinnitus: A Randomized Controlled Trial
CONCLUSIONS: (1) This new combination is more effective than post-auricular injection of lidocaine and methylprednisolone sodium succinate in treating tinnitus and improving psychological symptoms. The latter had no effect on improving psychological indicators. (2) With this combination, patients with different tinnitus frequencies experienced different improvements in anxiety. (3) Low-frequency tinnitus seems have been more likely to cause sound adaptation. (4) The improvement in tinnitus and anxiety was the same regardless of whether or not there was hearing loss.PMID:38518137 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)
