Understanding the Effects of Inflammation over time in Humans: Lessons from Psoriasis
Inflammation is critical to atherosclerosis initiation, progression and complications. The goal of The Laboratory of Inflammation and Cardiometabolic Diseases at the NHLBI Intramural Program is to understand how chronic systemic inflammation drives development of cardiometabolic diseases in humans. For the past decade, Dr. Mehta ’ s research program has utilized psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin disease, as a model to probe inflammatory, lipid and metabolic pathways associated with atherosclerosis progression. In 2012, Dr. Mehta founded the Psoriasis Atherosclerosis Cardiometabolic Initiative (PACI) at the NHLBI Int...

Dynamic Organelle Shape and Function During Herpesvirus Infection
Research in the Cristea laboratory focuses on characterizing mechanisms of cellular defense against viruses, as well as mechanisms used by viruses to manipulate these critical cellular processes. Towards these goals, her lab has promoted the integration of virology with proteomics and bioinformatics. The development of methods for studying virus-host protein interactions in space and time during the progression of an infection has allowed her group to bridge developments in mass spectrometry to important findings in virology. For more information go tohttps://oir.nih.gov/walsAir date: 6/16/2021 3:00:00 PM (Source: Videocast - All Events)

Special Tuesday WALS Lecture - Three (Formerly) Blind Mice: Reprogramming Tissues to Be Young Again
Special Tuesday WALS Lecture Dr. Sinclair is a professor of genetics, Blavatnik Institute, and co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for Biology of Aging Research, at Harvard Medical School. His lab seeks to understand why we age and whether we can extend human health and longevity. The Sinclair laboratory has demonstrated that it is possible to epigenetically reprogram cells to safely reverse aging in vivo and regain eyesight. This research, conducted with support from the National Institute on Aging and National Eye Institute, was recently published in Nature (PMID: 33268865; doi: 10.1038/s41586-020-2975-4) and will b...

COVID-19: Developing a Vaccine During a Pandemic
COVID-19 Scientific Interest GroupDr. Barouch is the William Bosworth Castle Professor of Medicine and Professor of Immunology at Harvard Medical School and director of the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. His talk will outline the current state of the COVID-19 vaccine field and will describe the development of the Ad26.COV2.S vaccine — a recombinant, replication-incompetent adenovirus serotype 26 (Ad26) vector encoding a full-length and stabilized SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. My laboratory focuses on studying the immunology and virology of HIV-1 infection and developing n...

Demystifying Medicine - Viruses and Immunodeficiency and Skin Microbiome
Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series How do virus and other pathogens penetrate the fortress that is human skin? What tricks do they use to slip past the guards? How do they compromise the immune system, and how do they take advantage of and reveal inherited immunodeficiency? These are the topics of the next Demystifying Medicine. Philip Murphy, M.D., is chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Molecular Immunology and its Molecular Signaling Section. His laboratory studies G protein-coupled receptors of the immune system with the goal of elucidating mechanisms by which the receptors relay chemotactic signals to cells and identify...

Young Blood for Old Brains
Speaker Tony Wyss-Coray's laboratory studies the role of immune and injury responses in neurodegeneration and Alzheimer ’ s disease. We seek to understand how immune responses and injury pathways may modulate neurodegeneration and age-related changes in the brain. We study these pathways in vivo and in cell culture using a number of genetic and proteomic tools. We have been particularly interested in the TGF-beta signaling pathway as a major regulator of biological processes and we are developing genetic and pharmacological agents to manipulate this pathway. For more information go tohttps://oir.nih.gov/walsAir date: 3/31...

COVID 19 Vaccine Development
My laboratory focuses on studying the immunology and virology of HIV-1 infection and developing novel vaccine strategies. I have also recently demonstrated the therapeutic efficacy of potent monoclonal antibodies and the early seeding of the viral reservoir. My laboratory received three NIH U19 Integrated Preclinical/Clinical AIDS Vaccine Development (IPCAVD) program grants in 2005, 2008, and 2012 to construct alternative serotype adenovirus vaccine vectors, to explore their immunogenicity and protective efficacy in rhesus monkeys, and to advance optimal vaccine candidates into clinical trials. Four phase 1 clinical trials...

NIDCR Clinical Research Fellowship Grand Round: Stem Cells in Jaw Growth and Disease
NIDCR Clinical Research Fellowship Grand Round The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the synovial joint of craniofacial complex and is critical for dental occlusion, mastication, and speech. TMJ trauma and diseases, such as osteoarthritis, are debilitating and compromise quality of life. Current TMJ treatments are two-fold, involving either palliative care or invasive total joint replacement surgeries. There are no minimally invasive, regenerative TMJ therapies. We have identified TMJ-specific fibrocartilage stem cells that self-organize and regenerate cartilage, fat and vascularized bone. Here we define heterogeneous popul...
