A comprehensive synthetic library of poly-N-acetyl glucosamines enabled vaccine against lethal challenges of Staphylococcus aureus
Nat Commun. 2024 Apr 24;15(1):3420. doi: 10.1038/s41467-024-47457-4.ABSTRACTPoly-β-(1-6)-N-acetylglucosamine (PNAG) is an important vaccine target, expressed on many pathogens. A critical hurdle in developing PNAG based vaccine is that the impacts of the number and the position of free amine vs N-acetylation on its antigenicity are not well understood. In this work, a divergent strategy is developed to synthesize a comprehensive library of 32 PNAG pentasaccharides. This library enables the identification of PNAG sequences with specific patterns of free amines as epitopes for vaccines against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aure...

Systematic Literature Review on the Incidence of Herpes Zoster in Populations at Increased Risk of Disease in the EU/EEA, Switzerland, and the UK
ConclusionsThe HZ incidence rate in Europe increased with age and varied across high-risk populations, with high rates for solid organ and stem cell transplants, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. Most studies were retrospective with methodological differences affecting generalizability and comparability. Future studies should stratify data by IC population, age, sex, severity, medication, and study timeframe. (Source: Infectious Diseases and Therapy)

Outcome of Human Parainfluenza Virus infection in allogeneic stem cell transplantation recipients: possible impact of ribavirin therapy
ConclusionALC, corticosteroids, and fever increased the risk for progression to LRTD while ribavirin decreased the risk. However, mortality was associated with ALC and co-infections. This study supports further research of ribavirin therapy for hPIV in the allo-HSCT setting. (Source: Infection)

Development and validation of an online dynamic nomogram system for pulmonary consolidation in children with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia
ConclusionsWe developed a dynamic online nomogram for predicting combined pulmonary consolidation in children with MP based on 7 variables for the first time. The predictive value and clinical benefit of the nomogram model were acceptable. (Source: European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases)

Socioeconomic Status and CD4 Count Among People with HIV Who Inject Drugs in St. Petersburg, Russia
AbstractLack of access to resources is a “fundamental cause” of poor HIV outcomes across the care cascade globally and may have the greatest impact on groups with co-existing marginalized identities. In a sample of people living with HIV (PWH) who inject drugs and were not on antiretroviral therapy (ART), we explored associations betwe en access to resources and HIV severity. Fundamental Cause Theory (FCT) sees socioeconomic status/access to resources as a root cause of disease and emphasizes that individuals with limited resources have fewer means to mitigate health risks and implement protective behaviors, which ulti...

Development of a risk prediction model for subsequent infection after colonization with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales: a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionsOur nomogram has a good predictive performance and could contribute to early identification of CRE carriers with a high-risk of subsequent infection, although external validation would be required. (Source: Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control)

Structural and functional characterization of FabG4 from Mycolicibacterium smegmatis
The rise in antimicrobial resistance is a global health crisis and necessitates the   development of novel strategies to treat infections. For example, in 2022 tuberculosis (TB) was the second leading infectious killer after COVID-19, with   multi-drug-resistant strains of TB having an ∼ 40% fatality rate. Targeting essential biosynthetic pathways in pathogens has proven to be successful for the development of novel antimicrobial treatments. Fatty-acid synthesis (FAS) in bacteria proceeds via the type II pathway, which is substantially different from the type I pathway utilized in animals. This makes bacterial fatty-ac...

Time to care and factors influencing appropriate Sudan Virus Disease care among case patients in Uganda, September to November 2022
Both the case-fatality and the transmission of Ebola Disease (EBOD) can be reduced with early isolation of and appropriate care and treatment for EBOD patients at Ebola Treatment Units (ETUs) [1]. This requires active case finding, monitoring of contacts, and rapid isolation of contacts who become ill, [2,3] as well as strong health-seeking behavior of persons with EBOD symptoms [2,4]. As such, communities must be aware of EBOD-related symptoms, both the early non-specific symptoms as well as the late EBOD-related symptoms. (Source: International Journal of Infectious Diseases)

Diagnostic Efficacy and Clinical Impact of Image-guided Core Needle Biopsy of Suspected Vertebral Osteomyelitis
Vertebral osteomyelitis diagnosis and etiologic identification is best accomplished by surgical sampling or by image-guided core needle biopsy and/or aspiration to obtain tissue for histopathologic examination and microbiological cultures [1,2]. The identification and antimicrobial susceptibility data of a causative microorganism is crucial, as the current standard of care is to treat patients with at least 6 weeks of antimicrobials, along with surgical therapy whenever possible [3,4]. The contributions of vaccination and natural infection to the production of neutralizing antibodies against the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) prototype strain and variants
The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic [1-3]. As the pandemic progressed, new, more transmissible but less virulent variants, like the Omicron variant, emerged and became more dominant, further reducing the mortality rate [4-8]. The World Health Organization (WHO) eventually declared that the COVID-19 pandemic no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern on May 2023 [9].
