Evaluation of the effects of Artemisia Annua L. and Moringa Oleifera Lam. on CD4 count and viral load among PLWH on ART at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital: a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial
Initiation of ART among people living with HIV (PLWH) having a CD4 count  ≤ 350cells/µl, produces poor immunological recovery, putting them at a high risk of opportunistic infections. To mitigate this, PLWH on ... (Source: AIDS Research and Therapy)

COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among People Living with HIV: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
AbstractVaccine hesitancy is one of the top 10 threats to global health, which affects the prevalence and fatality of vaccine-preventable diseases over the world. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people living with HIV (PLWH) may have higher risks of infection, more serious complications, and worse prognosis without the protection of the COVID-19 vaccine. A systematic review and meta-analysis aiming to evaluate the prevalence of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among PLWH was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases for studies published between January 1, 2020, and August 31, 2022. The pooled prevalence with a ...

Association of liver function and prognosis in patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome
by Shaoqiu Zhang, Jian Wang, Qun Zhang, Yifan Pan, Zhiyi Zhang, Yu Geng, Bei Jia, Yuanyuan Li, Yali Xiong, Xiaomin Yan, Jie Li, Huali Wang, Chao Wu, Rui Huang ObjectivesSevere fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an epidemic emerging infectious disease with high mortality rate. We investigated the association between liver injury and clinical outcomes in patients with SFTS. MethodsA total of 291 hospitalized SFTS patients were retrospectively included. Cox proportional hazards model was adopted to identify risk factors of fatal outcome and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to estimate cumulative risks. Results60.1% o...

Effect of fasting plasma glucose level in severe fever and thrombocytopenia syndrome patients without diabetes
This study assessed the relationship between fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels and in-hospital mortality, disease type, and secondary infections among individuals with SFTS without preexisting diabetes. The clinical data and laboratory results upon admission of 560 patients with SFTS without preexisting diabetes meeting the inclusion criteria at Wuhan Union Hospital were collected. FPG levels in surviving patients with SFTS subjects were significantly lower than those in patients with SFTS who had died (P (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Global analysis of respiratory viral circulation and timing of epidemics in the pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 pandemic eras, based on data from the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS)
The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has undeniably reshaped life on a global scale. As infection rates and fatalities surged to historic proportions, initial strategies to combat the crisis revolved around non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) such as the use of facemasks, physical distancing, travel bans, and lockdowns, considering the absence of available vaccines or targeted therapeutics. Characterized by a spectrum of actions spanning individual precautions to broader societal measures, NPIs aimed to curtail the rapid dissemination of the virus [1]. Generative Bayesian modeling to nowcast the effective reproduction number from line list data with missing symptom onset dates
by Adrian Lison, Sam Abbott, Jana Huisman, Tanja Stadler The time-varying effective reproduction numberRt is a widely used indicator of transmission dynamics during infectious disease outbreaks. Timely estimates ofRt can be obtained from reported cases counted by their date of symptom onset, which is generally closer to the time of infection than the date of report. Case counts by date of symptom onset are typically obtained from line list data, however these data can have missing information and are subject to right truncation. Previous methods have addressed these problems independently by first imputing missing onset d...

Evaluation of the JF5-based Aspergillus galactomannoprotein lateral flow device for diagnosing invasive aspergillosis in cancer patients
ConclusionThe AspLFD demonstrated good performance in diagnosing IA in cancer patients, especially those with solid tumours. The AspLFD is thus an alternative POCT, particularly when GM evaluations are not readily available. (Source: European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases)
